Thinking it was only some common discomfort, neither Al nor his wife took it seriously, but the boy died suddenly that night.‎ Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol(酒精) for help. In time Al became an alcoholic.‎ ‎  As the alcoholism progressed, AL began to lose everything he had -- his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of his death, I thought, "What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure! "‎ ‎  As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment. I knew Al's now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.‎ ‎  I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, "As a child until I left home at 18, he came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, "love you, son."‎ ‎ Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.‎ ‎24. Why did Al feel guilty?‎ ‎ A. Because his wife left him.‎ ‎ B. Because his carelessness caused his son’s death.‎ ‎ C. Because he lost all his possessions.‎ ‎ D. Because he turned to alcohol.‎ ‎25. What caused Al’s death in view of Al’s whole life?‎ ‎ A. Drinking too much wine. ‎ ‎ B. His job as a painter.‎ ‎ C. Losing his son and wife.‎ ‎ D. Living alone.‎ ‎26. What do we know about Ernie according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. He shows great kindness to his children.‎ ‎ B. His father had had a bad effect on him.‎ ‎ C. He left his father at 6.‎ ‎ D. He didn’t talk much to his father.‎ ‎27. Why did the writer think he was wrong to say Al was a failure? ‎ ‎ A. Because Al left much money to his son.‎ ‎ B. Because Al was ever a skilled artist.‎ ‎ C. Because as a father, Al gave his son his deep love.‎ ‎ D. Because his wife left him and he lost his land and house.‎ C You may think, salt is just a simple cooking element we shake on our food for a little extra taste. But salt is much more than that. Without salt our muscles would not move. Our nervous systems would not operate. Our hearts would not beat.‎ But do not think rubbing salt in a wound will help. Doing that would be painful and not heal the wound. To rub salt in a wound is an idiom that means to purposefully make a bad situation worse.‎ Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the animals they killed. But advances in agriculture led to a diet low in salt. So, humans needed to find other sources. Those who lived near the ocean or other natural sources for salt were lucky. Those who did not had to trade for salt. In fact, people used salt as a method of payment in many parts of the ancient world. The word “salary” comes from the word “salt”. Salt also played an important part in population movement and world exploration. Explorers understood that if they could keep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. So they used salt to preserve food and explored the world.‎ Salt was so important that, according to food historians, it was traded pound-for- pound for gold. Today, people still use the expressions “to be worth one’s salt” or “worth one's weight in salt”. The expressions describe a person of value. A person might also be called “salt of the earth”. That description means he or she is dependable and trustworthy. However, when you say “I think we should take what he said with a grain of salt” you mean you accept it but maintain a degree of doubt about its truth.‎ ‎28. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?‎ A. Salt plays an important part in our life.‎ B. Salt makes food tasty.‎ C. Salt is considered to be part of our muscles.‎ D. Salt is simple as a seasoning (调料).‎ ‎29. If a beggar's bread is stolen, we can describe the matter as ______.‎ A. salt of the earth B. to be worth his salt C. a grain of salt D. rubbing salt in a wound ‎30. Which of the following is not the reason for people’s trading for salt?‎ ‎ A. Salt is necessary for people’s health.‎ ‎ B. Some people didn’t have access to salt in a natural way. ‎ ‎ C. People feeding on plants needed to supplement (补充) salt.‎ ‎ D. Some people killed animals as their food and needed salt to cook with. ‎ ‎31. How did salt contribute to population movement and world exploration?‎ ‎ A. Salt was a method of payment.‎ B. Salt could make food last longer.‎ C. Salt was used to treat wounds.‎ D. Salt was given to people as their salary.‎ D Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partner, friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18. ‎ Scientific consensus (共识) suggests that intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors (因素) such as schooling and nutrition playing a part to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their own intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激) from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true – so people sharing a home or workplace with those who are fatheaded risk seeing their IQ levels fall as a result.‎ ‎ Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and found a bright person with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point ‎ IQ disadvantage, compared to a similar person with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, people with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.‎ Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80 percent of intelligence, the remaining 20 percent is linked to lifestyle. This means that people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more. Therefore, the best way to improve IQ level is to mix with bright friends or find an intellectually challenging job.‎ ‎32. According to the passage, it is commonly believed that ______.‎ ‎ A. doing something challenging is good for one’s intelligence ‎ B. one cannot change his intelligence during adulthood ‎ C. you will be smarter if you have a partner, a friend, a brother or sister ‎ D. people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall ‎33. The underlined word in the 2nd paragraph probably means ____.‎ A. stupid B. strong C. clever D. similar ‎34. James Flynn holds the belief that ____.‎ A. intellectual stimulation from others makes the brain work better B. one's IQ could be held back if he has no brothers or sisters C. a person can become smarter throughout his/her life.‎ D. one’s intelligence will not be influenced by others after 18‎ ‎35. What's the best title for the passage?‎ A. A Commonly Held Belief.‎ B. Brain Is Like Muscle.‎ C. Bright People Make You Smarter.‎ D. Intelligence: fixed or changeable?‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ The holiday’s upon us. After months of study, you have some time to yourself. So, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, ‘Why trouble with books? We have ‎ the Internet and other media that offer a lot more colorful programs. Books are history!” But don’t be fooled. 36. To gain more words and expressions One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful collection of words and expressions, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course. 37. 38. ‎ An even more important point is that books give you something that modern media simply cannot: The webpage is always full of pictures and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. Though “easy” may be welcome, unluckily it’s of little use for any long-time development of reading skills and the general language level. 39. To experience more pleasure Perhaps the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it by yourself means that it’s something you do by and for yourself. 40.
