(思维品质 语言能力)
Joseph Goldberger was a doctor for the United States Public Health Service. In 1912,he began to study a disease that was killing thousands of people in the South. The disease was pellagra(烟酸缺乏病).
Doctor Goldberger travelled to the state of Mississippi where many people had pellagra. He studied the patients and their families. Most of the people were poor. The doctor came to believe that the disease was not passed from one person to another, but instead had something to do with food.
He received agreement from state officials to test this idea at a prison(监狱).Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual food, mostly corn.A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and milk.Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not.
But some experts refused to accept that poor food caused pellagra. They thought there were other causes.
So Doctor Goldberger put blood(血液)from a person with pellagra into his own body.He even took pills that had blood from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Doctor Goldberger’s wife.None of them got sick.Later, the doctor discovered that a bit of dried brewer’s yeast(酿酒的酵母)each day could prevent pellagra.
Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929.He was 55 years old.Several years later, researchers discovered the true cause of pellagra:having little of the vitamin B.
21.How old was Doctor Goldberger when he began to study pellagra?

Science can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure(血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some,an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife.A study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress(紧张) levels and blood pressure in people—half of them are pet owners—while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic(算术) or held a hand in ice water.Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife,a close friend or with a pet.People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed(放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.
A study reported that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits.Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet and exercise programs;a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds of 5% of their body weight.Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight.Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but,say researchers, got more exercise overall—mostly with their dogs—and found it worth doing.

The famous research scientist Stephen Glenn, who had made very important medical achievements, was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter. The reporter asked Stephen Glenn why he was able to be so much more creative than others.
He said that it all came from an experience with his mother that happened when he was two years old.He tried to carry a bottle of milk from the refrigerator. But carelessly, the bottle fell and milk sprinkled all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of complaining about it,she said,“Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made!Well, the terrible thing has already been done.Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed,he did. After a few minutes, his mother said,“You know,Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up.We could use a sponge(海绵) or a towel.Which do you prefer?”He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the milk.
His mother then said,“You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to carry a big milk bottle with two small hands.Let’s go out in the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.”The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip(容器的嘴) with both hands,he could carry it without dropping it.What a

Recently I paid a visit to Harvard University, where there are top class scientists and professors and the best academic(学术的) system in the world.
I was pretty shocked when I first stepped onto the campus(校园).Well,it’s not even really a campus. It’s more like a district in a small town.
Harvard’s main buildings are from the 18th century. They look very old and simple. You might even say they’re a little old. They don’t fit the modern idea of university at all.The buildings are surrounded by grass and trees,so I felt as if I had walked into a medieval castle(中世纪的城堡).But when I looked across the street, busy shops and in-fashion students made me feel like I was in the 21st century again. It creates a strong contrast(对比)and brings a special atmosphere to the school.
Our tour guide Gary took us around and told us,“You see this grass field in the center of the school? Here is where they host their graduation ceremony(毕业典礼).They just set up tents and benches and have a very simple ceremony.” Unbelievable!Who would think the most talented students just graduate on the lawn?
I saw some students put a blanket on the grass and lie down to read a book. When I listened to the soft sound of pages turning, along with singing of the birds,I felt very calm. There was no competitive feeling at all.
Harvard has the world’s first computer in its science center and there are hundreds of high-end computers too.Its religion and the literature departments are also among the best.It is the perfect mix of tradition and new technology. It makes Harvard a very attractive place to study in.I hope one day I’ll attend my dream school—Harvard.
