Benjamin Giroux, a 10-year-old boy with autism(自闭症),came home from Cumberland Head Elementary School in Plattsburgh, New York, on April 7 more excited than ever. To celebrate National Poetry Month, his fifth-grade teacher asked her students to write a poem about themselves, beginning every sentence with “I am”.
Benjamin couldn’t wait to start writing , so he sat down and didn’t look up until he finished. A few hours later, he showed the poem to his parents, who
immediately got choked up(说不出话来).
“I am odd(古怪的). I am new,” Benjamin wrote in the poem. “I wonder if you are too. I hear voices in the air. I see you don’t and that’s not fair.”
“I feel like a boy in outer space. I touch the stars and feel out of place,” he went on to write.
“At first, we felt sad and hurt that he felt lonely, misunderstood and odd at school,” Giroux said. “As the poem went on, we realized that he understood that he was odd and that so was everyone else in their own way. This is what Ben wants everyone to know.”
Benjamin was supposed to read his poem aloud to the class the following day, but upon waking up that morning, he refused to go to school. Instead, he stayed at home.
He didn’t think his poem was any good, so his dad posted it on Facebook in the hope of getting some encouraging comments(评论). There is an old saying about volunteer work that goes like this:”No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”
Today, many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are a lot of ways to meet other people’s needs. For example, some volunteers provide help after a disaster. Others are happy to get dirty while repairing homes or planting trees or flowers in poor neighborhoods. Young people see suffering and loneliness around them and find ways to help. And history lovers help archaeologists(考古学家) search for ancient objects to help deepen knowledge of the past.
Volunteers also work in many areas around the world, including Haiti. More than two years have passed since a 7.0 earthquake shook the nation. The exact number of people who died may never be known. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquake still live in temporary(临时的) shelters. Last year, former American President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn joined five hundred Habitat volunteers in the town of Leogane to build houses.
Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example. Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project. She could almost not believe so much rubbish was ruining some of the area’s most beautiful sights. Underhill learned about how to deal with the rubbish while taking part in other volunteer projects. But soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. Underhill says the work is very hard. But she praises the group’s efforts as a wonderful experience. The young Englishwoman says the Indian media have started calling her “Garbage Girl”. And she says she is pleased with the name.
American teenagers also volunteer in many ways.
29. The author uses an old saying in the first paragraph to ________.
A. encourage people to become volunteers

C.draw the readers’ attention to care for the poor
D.explain the meaning of volunteer work
30.What did former American President Jimmy Carter do as a volunteer?
A.Give some money to the poor in Haiti.
B.Help to build houses after a disaster.
C.Plant trees and flowers in Haiti’s park.
D.Help archaeologists search for ancient objects.
31.What can we learn from the text?
A.Underhill is called “Garbage Girl ” by the American media.
B.Underhill has formed her own group to make money.
C.The number of people died in Haiti’s earthquake is unclear.
D.History lovers mainly learn the history from ancient objects.
32.What will probably be talked about in the text that follows?
A.The reason why people offer heir services to others.
B.The volunteer work that American teenagers do.
C.The way to join in a volunteer group.
D.The benefits that volunteers can achieve.

The world’s coral reefs(珊瑚礁) are increasingly being threatened, mostly because of human activities. A group of environmental organizations published a report about it . For the first time, it also considered the effect of climate change on these threatened sea organisms(生物体).
Jane Lubchenco is administrator(管理人)of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(行政部门). She says the problem is serious and about 75 percent of the world’s coral reefs are currently threatened by a combination of local and global pressures. Lubchenco says the threat to coral reefs will continue to increase unless something is done to save them.
Nancy Knowlton is with the Smithsonian Institution. She says the threat to coral reefs could have a major effect on sea life.
Millions of species of sea life depend on coral reefs for their survival. This makes them an important source of food for millions of people around the world. Coral reefs also protect coastlines from storms and flooding.
Lauretta Burke is with the World Resources Institute. She was one of the lead writers of the report. She says more than 275 million people are dependent on the resources from coral reefs, mostly in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.
The report noted overfishing(过度捕鱼) and climate change as two of the most serious threats to the world’s oceans.
Burke says while the reefs around Australia are the best protected, those in Southeast Asia are the most threatened. Ninety percent of them are at risk, largely because of overfishing.
An analysis was done, which suggests that one third of all coral species are actually at risk of extinction. This makes coral the most endangered animal on the planet, even more endangered than frogs.
The report says coral reefs are quite important. It says better management practices and policies must be established to reduce the threats to these valuable ecosystems(生态系统).
33. For what purpose is the text written?
A.Calling on people to protect the life under the sea.
B.Telling the public the function of coral reefs.
C.Developing tourism by introducing coral reefs.
D.Announcing a new report about coral reefs.
34. According to the text, which of the following is the function of the coral reefs?
A. Serving as food for people living near the sea.
B.Protecting the coastlines from storms.
C.Predicting the coming of the storm.
D.Creating a certain income for some countries.

39 Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll discover EarthⅡsomeday. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone’s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Use the Internet carefully. 40 But some things on the Internet aren’t good for kids, so try to visit web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. If you can’t find any good websites for children, here are two:
http://kids.eastday.com, http://www.chinakids.net.com.

B. In that way , you can learn more about animals and how to protect them.
