Aaron Fotheringham has been an amazing person with backflips(后空翻) and other skateboarding tricks throughout his teens. And his famous backflip has won worldwide notice in the form of Record. Why did his particular backflip earn such a reputation? Aaron was the first person to successfully perform a backflip in a wheelchair.
Aaron was born ill. He has been in a wheelchair since the age of 8. Since then, he has even developed a new extreme sport in which wheelchair-bound athletes use their chairs like skateboards or bikes to do tricks. Now Aaron’s friends call him “Wheelz”, and he says it’s huge praise.
Though Aaron makes his stunts(特技表演) look easy, doing tricks in a wheelchair is very different from using a skateboard or bike. It’s a completely different skill set.
If a skateboarder goes into a backflip like Aaron and doesn’t start out with enough rotation (旋转), he or she can bend his or her body to speed up. This allows a skateboarder to make complete rotation in time for a successful landing. But Aaron can’t bend his body any more than it
is already.
That means Aaron has to have everything perfect before going into a backflip. He needs to launch himself to just the right height. If he doesn’t, he could fall on the ground completely. “My rotation is so quick that I don’t have much time to think,” says Aaron.
Aaron’s stunts take a lot of practice. He tries to make it to the skate park every day to work on his backflip and try out new tricks. Even though he’s an excellent athlete, Aaron doesn’t always land his stunts perfectly. But Aaron says he doesn’t let bad landings stop him. He gets right back up and goes for his backflip again.

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2 to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH!The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Reducing some climate pollutants could save millions of lives. Gases, like black carbon, or soot, methane and ozone in city smog, are called “short-lived climate pollutants”. Not only do they contribute to climate change, but they can cause ill health.
The UN health group also says the pollutants can decrease agricultural crops. These pollutants exist both outdoors and indoors. WHO Environment Chief Maria Neira says the pollutants have a strong effect on climate change. She says the good news is that they only stay in the atmosphere for a few days to 10 years. That is much shorter than carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which can remain for hundreds, or even thousands of years. “ For the fact that they are
short-lived pollutants, when you address them, you can reduce emissions(排放物) very rapidly, and then improve air quality as well as slowing the rate of climate change. You will have an immediate reduction in ill health and diseases caused by air pollution, “she says.
The WHO has a number of available and affordable ways to lessen these short-lived climate pollutants. At the top of their list: cutting vehicle emissions by requiring higher emission and efficiency standards. More emissions are released when engines are running.
Indoor air pollution also contributes to bad health and early death. The WHO reports that nearly 3 billion low-income households rely on “dirty fuels”. Coal, wood and kerosene used for cooking and heating are examples. They say cleaner and more efficient stove and fuel alternatives( 可供选择的事物) could cut down on the health risks.
Another way they say to cut back on these pollutants is to have more investments (投资)and policies for rapid transport. These include buses, trains, bicycles or walking routes. They say these investments could have many benefits, including safer travel, reduced health risks from noise and air pollution and more physical activities.
The WHO report also calls for encouraging high and middle-income populations to include more plant-based foods in their diets. It says this could reduce heart disease and some cancer. It could also slow the methane gas production that comes with some animal-sourced food.

Something happens to many children when they are out of school over the summer months. It is called the “summer slide”. This may sound like a ride at a water park. But it’s not. Summer slide is when children forget much of what they learned during the latest school year.
To fight the effects of summer slide, teachers often give students homework over the summer. Many parents may send children to all kinds of camps or find other activities to
keep them learning. Some even try to build up their children’s strengths by getting them into extra tutoring.
However, experts say keeping children busy all the time is not good for them. The result is often a tired child with an overcrowded schedule. What should parents do instead? Nothing. According to Lea Waters, a psychologist specializing in positive psychology and positive education, slowing down actually helps children become the best they can be. Machines need to be reset, while kids need to goof off(偷懒). She says that goofing off really allows kids to have some downtime, when they are not focused on a specific task but are free to do something that they’re interested in doing and that they can do more automatically and get enjoyment from, like shooting baskets or listening to the music.
She also adds that goofing off does not mean the brain isn’t working It just goes into this default network mode(默认网络模式)and uses that time to process all the information it had during the day, to integrate(整合)new information. It makes a kind of decision about what information to put into memory and what to get rid of, which in fact helps to improve memory.
