A new family moved in next door and I got to meet the mother of the family, Lydia. Lydia is Korean, and her family moved to our city so her husband could go to graduate school. We started talking, and she was apologetic about how bad her English was, but I didn't care. I knew how hard it was to learn a second language. I enjoyed chatting with Lydia as we watched our kids play.
It was what came next that challenged me: Lydia asked if I'd be willing to help her with her English.
Now, I am not a teacher. I admire teachers, and I'm grateful for teachers, and it's because I admire what they do so much that I was quite sure that I couldn't do it myself. '
But Lydia was sure that she wanted my help. I was doubtful. I wasn't sure my "help" was even worth being called by that name.
But because she asked me, I said "yes." . :
And that was the beginning of a friendship. Lydia and I spent afternoons sitting together and reading the newspaper, and as we did, she asked me questions when she had them - questions about language, yes, but also questions about the new culture she found herself in.
In turn, I asked my own questions, growing curious about her home country and culture. We bonded over our shared faith and our struggles as mothers of kids with special needs, When I
complimented(恭维) her cooking, she began to teach me about Korean food, eventually leading to a shared trip to explore the Korean grocery stores in our city.
Because of Lydia, I learned more about my own hometown than I ever could have learned by myself.
I'm still not sure that I'm any good as a teacher. But I'm grateful I said "yes" when my neighbor asked me to help her with her English. That meant spending extra time with my neighbor, and that extra time meant she didn't remain just my neighbor. She became my friend. .
24. What was Lydia sorry about?
A. Her bad English. B. Her carelessness.
C. Nobody teaching her English. D. Her poor life in a new place.
25. What can be concluded from the fourth paragraph?
A. The author admired teachers.
B. The author wanted to be a teacher.
C. The author didn't want to help Lydia.
D. The author was not confident in helping Lydia.
26. Why was the author grateful at the last paragraph?
A. She managed to learn English well. B. She made friends with her neighbor.
C. She learned how to cook Korean food. D. She realized her dream of being a teacher.
27. What can we learn from the passage? .
A. No pains, no gains. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. To help others is to help ourselves. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
Your car is a necessary part of your life. You use it every day. Of course, you want to hold on to it so you make sure it has the latest alarm and immobilizer. But despite all these, cars like yours are still stolen every day. In fact, in this country, one car is stolen almost every minute! And if your car is stolen, you only have a 50:50 chance of seeing it again.
Each year, car crime costs nearly £3 billion. Of course, if you’re insured, you won’t lose out, or will you? Firstly, you will have to pay extra insurance later on, and then you may not be offered the full amount by the agent. You will probably have to hire a car and you will also lose the value of the contents and accessories (配件) in the car.
Now comes the solution. An RAC Trackstar system, hidden in one of 47 possible secret locations in your car, is the key of our system. If your car is stolen, radio signals are sent at twenty-second intervals from the car to the RAC Trackstar National Control Center via a satellite network. Then a computer gives the vehicle’s exact location, speed and direction.
The RAC Trackstar National Control Center, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, will immediately inform the police in the area where the car is located. Because the police receive information every twenty seconds, they will always know the vehicle’s location. Once the thief has been arrested, your car will be returned to you.
RAC Trackstar is unique in being able to provide the National Control Center with details of the exact location of your car, its speed and direction. And speed is the key to successful recovery of a stolen vehicle. RAC Trackstar Control will immediately tell the police if you report your car stolen and under the 24-hour Guardian Option. It will also tell you if your car has been stolen. RAC Trackstar’s constant updates mean the police are kept informed of the car’s location. All these greatly improve your chances of seeing your car again.
28. If your car is stolen, you will have to ______.
A. hire a new car B. pay more insurance
C. buy a RAC Trackstar system D. inform the National Control Center
29. The Trackstar system can tell the police ______.
A. how the car is stolen B. who the thief is
C. what brand the car is D. where the car is
30. The underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refers to ______.
A. the RAC Trackstar Control B. the Guardian Option
C. the insurance company D. the local police station
31. According to the passage, people with RAC Trackstar ______.
A. automatically find directions B. seldom get their vehicles damaged
C. are more likely to get the stolen cars back D. have less chance of being in an accident
D
If I scratch your back and you scratch mine, then we’re both better off as a result--so goes the principle of reciprocity. As humans, we are familiar with the concept, whether it is by buying rounds of drinks or expelling diplomats. But do animals also help those who help them? The answer may be yes. A paper by Dolivo and Taborsky shows that Norway rats will only give as good as they get.
In their laboratory, Dolivo and Taborsky first trained rats to pull on a stick that drew a food item within reach of a rat in a neighboring cage separated from them by wire mesh(钢丝网).
They then introduced a further treatment in which an experimental rat was placed in a cage with other caged rats on either side. On one side the rat pulled a stick that provided pieces of carrot to the rat in the central cage, while the other pulled a stick that produced banana pieces.
In the following trials the focal rat( the one in the central cage)had the opportunity to repay the other rats using the same stick tool to deliver food items.
Now, the rats had typically turned their noses up at the carrot and showed a strong preference for the more desirable banana. On the basis that the banana-providing rat should therefore remembered as the superior partner, the authors predicted that in the test phase(阶段) the focal rat would more readily provide help for banana-offering rats than for carrot-offering rats. This proved to be the case: the rats that had provided better help in the past received greater rewards - it seemed that they were behaving reciprocally.
Dolivo and Taborsky’ s experiments show that rats can recall the quality of help provided and by which rat, and adjust their behavior so as to invest more time and energy in helping those that helped them. It is apparent that we shouldn’t undervalue the ability of animals to engage in reciprocity.
32. What does the underlined word "reciprocity” probably refer to?
A. The act of being kind to other people. B. A cooperative exchange of favors.
C. A positive attitude to everything. D. The quality of being generous.
33. What would happen if a rat pulled the stick?
A. It would find some food in its own cage. B. Other rats would be able to enter its cage.
C. Another rat in another cage would get food. D. It would be able to enter a neighboring cage.
34. Which got more benefit from the focal rat?
A. The rats that preferred carrot pieces. B. The rats that preferred banana pieces.
C. The rats that had provided carrot pieces. D. The rats that had provided banana pieces.
35. Which of the following might Dolivo and Taborsky agree with?
A. Some animals may return others help. B. Norway rats have very poor memories.
C. It is hard to explain the ability of animals. D. Rats behavior is very uncommon.

What is the traffic like after I travel between cities in the US? Hope to hearing from you. Thank you!

Dear Jamie,
I am more than glad to know that you are interested in the traditional Chinese literature. It’s never easy to learn Chinese characters and essays. Even native Chinese speakers may find it hard to learn them well, so you don’t have to feel upset. Here are some useful tips.
First, turn to the Internet for help when you have a problem, where you can learn how to read and write the characters. Second, you can learn from Chinese people around and I’m always here to help. But the most important is to keep on learning and reading. You are sure to make progress!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
