Her parents, E. J. and Melissa Bice, were discussing going to Houston to help the recovery efforts. She overheard their conversation and decided she was going to gather a pile of toys to donate to the children whose belongings(财物)had been destroyed in the floodwaters.
“We went through Hurricane Katrina 12 years ago so we know the heartache and the loss of everything,” her dad, E. J. Bice, told ABC News. “We were discussing it and she just went to her room and started grabbing her own toys and putting them in a bag.”
Among the pile of toys she was donating was one of her favorite dolls, along with
a handwritten note that is pulling at heartstrings.
“Dear Little Girl, I hope you like my new doll and her things,” the note read. “Take good care of her and have fun. She was a good friend to me and will be a great friend to you.”

For most people, graduation means the end of years of hard work. But my graduation day was not. I still remember that weekend two years ago. Many families flew in from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. But we had seen the economy turn from bad to worse in my senior year.
We graduates with degrees, but very limited prospects (前途). I gathered up everything I couldn’t carry and put it into storage. Knowing the small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, I drove to Southern California to find work. But after I sent off a bunch of job applications, I found myself in the exact same spot as I was before. Now the day came for me to pay off my student loans(贷款).
Every morning I woke up, I felt anxious. How I hoped what happened to me was just a bad dream! Days felt like weeks, weeks like months. I felt painful and helpless in those months. And the most discouraging part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress.
So I began to write. Putting words on a page made everything seem a little brighter. And writing gave me hope. If you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I channeled my frustration(挫折)into a children’s book. Beyond the River was the story of an unlikely hero featuring a little fish who simply refused to give up on his dream.
And then one day, without any sort of writing degree---just a lot of hard work and perseverance(毅力)---I was offered a publishing contract for my first book! After that, things slowly began to improve. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with The Walt Disney Company and was hired shortly after.
If you work hard and give it time, things will always get better. Even if things seem hopeless now, don’t give up. Usually, our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream. All we need is the courage to push beyond the river.
28. Many families got to the author’s school to __________.

30. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The difficult situation the author was in
B. The frustration the author had in his university
C. The struggle the author had in choosing his career
D. The suffering the author experienced while writing
31. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?
A. All roads lead to Rome B. Wisdom comes from experience
C. You can’t get something for nothing D. Where there is a will, there is a way
D
Microplastic particles(微塑料颗粒)appear to be killing fish because some baby fish prefer to eat the particles rather than their actual food, researchers have warned.
With fears that the amount of plastic in the oceans could soon equal the weight of fish in the sea, scientists have become increasingly concerned about the effects on the marine environment.
Now a study published in the journal Science has found that baby perch(鲈鱼)will actively choose to eat plastic over the plankton they would normally feed on. The researchers said this greatly increased death rates of the perch, stopping their growth and appearing to change usually behavior. For example, thy are losing the ability to smell a predator(捕食者), which makes them much more vulnerable.
For example, they seemed to lose the ability to smell a predator that made them much more vulnerable.
Professor Peter Eklov, a co-author of the Science paper, said: “This is the first time an animal has been found to prefer to eat plastic particles over food. Increases in microplastic pollution in the Baltic Sea and decreases of the coastal basic species(物种)have recently been noticed. When placed in a tank, perch exposed
to microplastic were eaten four times more quickly than perch that had not been eating plastic.”
Fellow researcher Oona Lpnnstedt stressed the effects of fish eating large amounts of plastic were likely to be felt throughout the food chain. “If early life-history stages of other species are similarly affected by microplastics, this will in turn increase death rates, so the effects on marine ecosystems could be lasting,” she said.
Microplastic is produced as larger pieces of plastic waste are broken down in the environment, but large quantities of microfibers from synthetic clothes---materials essentially made of plastic---are produced each time they are washed and are small enough to pass through waste water treatment plants and get into the sea.
Cosmetics(化妆品)companies are also continuing to put microplastic pieces into their products, but the industry says it will try to stop using them by 2020.
32. What are the scientists worried about?
A. The loss of food sources B. The rising water temperature
C. Large amounts of plastic in the ocean D. Fishes growing bigger and bigger
33. The underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A. easily harmed B. strong C. active D. well protected
34. What can we know from the text?
A. Only species that eat plastic particles will be affected
B. Fish farming contributes much to the pollution of the food chain
C. Microplastic means the breakdown of large pieces of plastic
D. Products used in our daily life may produce microplastic
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Let’s Protect the Marine Animals
B. Fish Prefer to Eat Plastic over Food
C. The Effects of Plastic Pollution
D. The Oceans Are Full of Microplastic Particles

Do you feel a little guilty about your daily nap(小睡)after lunch? Don’t. Research shows that catching a short nap can be good for your brain. 36
While a 30-to-90-minute nap in older adults appears to have brain benefits, anything longer than an hour and a half may create problems with cognition(认知), the ability to think and form memories, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
“ 37 But it is related to one’s sleep cycles and quality,” says Charlene Gamaldo, M. D. , medical director of Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center. “As the study showed, for older people, longer naps tend to interfere(妨碍)with cognition,” she says.
38 Nearly 60 percent of participants reported napping after lunch for about an hour. Scientists found that people who napped for 20 to 90 minutes have a better memory than people who did not nap, or who napped for longer than 90 minutes. People who napped for 30 to 90 minutes were also better at figure drawing, another sign of good cognition.
One theory explains poor cognition in those who take longer naps. 39 “In the study, naps longer than 90 minutes could have been called ‘a second sleep’. This poor quality nighttime sleep, which requires extra-long napping during the day, can lead to cognitive problems,” Gamaldo adds.
According to Gamald, longer naps can cause a couple of other problems, including temporary grogginess(眩晕无力)and inability to sleep at night.
40 As a result, “People need to get the right quantity and quality of rest,” says Gamaldo.
A. I consider napping to be a good thing.
B. But it is the length of your nap that matters.
C. Generally speaking, the older one gets, the longer naps one needs.
D. Researchers looked at data from 2,974 people in China aged 65 and older.
E. Resting more during the day may be a sign of poor quality nighttime sleep.
F. Taking long naps during the day makes it difficult for one to fall asleep at night.
G. Overall, studies show that people who sleep too much or too little may have poor health.
