A few months ago, I was picking up the children at school. Emily, another mother that I
knew well, rushed up to me. She was filled with anger. “Do you know what you and I are?” she
demanded. Before I could answer, she gave out the reason for her question. She had just returned
from renewing her driver’s license at a government office. Asked by the woman recorder to state
her occupation, Emily hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. “What I mean is,” explained the
woman, “do you have a job, or are you just a ...?” “Of course I have a job,” answered Emily. “I’m
a mother.” “We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation ... ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder
emphatically (强调地).
I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation. This time it was
at our own Town Hall. The clerk was a woman. “And what is your occupation?” she asked. What
made me say it, I do not know. The words simply jumped out. “I’m ... a Research Associate in the
field of Child Development and Human Relations.” The clerk paused, her ball-point pen frozen in
mid air, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly.
“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “just what you do in your field?” Coolly, I
heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research in the laboratory and in the field. I’m
working for my masters (the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). I often
work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most jobs and the
rewards are in satisfaction rather than just money.”
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood
up and personally showed me out. As I drove into our driveway, I was greeted by my lab
assistants---ages 13, 7, and 3. And upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (six months)
in the child-development program. I felt successful.
Motherhood...what a glorious career, especially when there is a title on the door.
25. On hearing the author’s answer at the town hall, the clerk felt ______.
A. bored and disappointed B. surprised and curious
C. satisfied and excited D. interested and respectful
26. What do you know about the author’s family?

27. What does the author think of her own job?
A. Exciting and profitable. B. Satisfying and successful.

C
While there are some unpleasant people in the world, let’s not forget that most people are
friendly! If you find someone who likes the same restaurants as you or who is also crazy about
Harry Potter, then feel free to talk the night away! Just keep the conversation light and about
your common interests. If you don’t like the topic brought up, keep in mind that you are always
in control. You don’t need to care about your manners at this time!
Do stay open-minded. Sometimes chatting with strangers can turn into a close
relationship—or just another person you can turn to for a laugh. But when typing on your
computer, you will get excited and want to tell your new friend all about yourself. Keep the
personal information secret, and instead, talk about fun hobbies or the latest The Good Wife. If
Stranger Sally is asking what you look like, time to put up the red flag. It is never necessary for
someone to know what you look like.
Always listen to your gut (直觉). If something inside you is telling you something isn’t right,
it probably isn’t. Pay attention to how your body reacts to certain people online. Remember, you
never really know who you are talking to just by looking at a computer screen name, so
downloading anything is an absolute no.
Talking to strangers online doesn’t always have to be a nightmare. By following these do’s
and don’ts, you will make chatting with someone you don’t know a cool experience, and can
make sure that you stay safe in the world of the Internet.
29. What is the writer’s attitude to most people today?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Positive. D. Disappointed.
30. When you chat online, you should chat with the people who ______.
A. care about your manners B. play a role in Harry Potter
C. have dinner with you in the same restaurant D. like doing the same things as you
31. What can you do when chatting online?
A. Download something from net friends.
B. Tell your living place to the new friends.
C. Talk about a fun hobby with the new friends.
D. Send a picture of yourself to the strangers.
32. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Guidance on Chatting with Strangers B. Possible Dangers of Surfing the Internet
C. Advice on How to Get Online Help D. Advantages of Surfing the Internet
D
If we had clones, we would give people a chance. If there was a couple who couldn’t have a
child but wanted one, they could clone the father or mother and have a clone baby. It gives
people life. It’s a step forward in technology, so why can’t we clone? We’ve done so many things,
like find cures for harmful diseases, so why can’t we clone?
—Posted by: Lexnom
Cloning people can bring upon the end of the world because with too many people on the
earth we will run out of natural resources. Clones can steal the identity of the original organism.
Clones can be used to commit crimes. Cloning is dangerous and should not be done, it is bad!
—Posted by: Erayn
Cloning is wrong. Imagine that you, a fully functioning human being, as born in this world as
nothing more than an organ farm. People think using clones for organs is ok, but would you like
to be created only to get your kidney cut out? No. How is doing medical experiments on a clone
any different than doing it to people? A clone is a person, a copy of one.
—Posted by: Bradley
The world is overpopulated as it is. To put it simply, the world already has problems with
hunger, thirst, and providing the basic needs for life in a large portion (部分)of the world.
There really is not a valid benefit to this. If anything, it is creating another life/person that could
potentially have a horrible life and be treated very poorly.
—Posted by: Angela
33. Who is worried that cloning will put an end to the world ?
A. Lexnom. B. Erayn. C. Bradley. D. Angela.
34. Which of the following is NOT a shortcoming of cloning?

B. Clones can be used to break the law.
C. Clones can help consume natural resources.
D. Cloning makes it possible to cure some diseases.

mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. ___40___ Firstly, translating creates a problem
between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people always repeat themselves. By
remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn’t pay much attention I could usually understand
what the speaker had said.

范文:
Hi, David! I’m really delighted to know that you have developed an interest in Chinese
ancient poems while watching Chinese Poetry Conference. Here I’d like to share with you my
understanding about them.
Being part of our traditional Chinese culture, Chinese ancient poems enjoy great popularity
at home and abroad. With Chinese ancient poems passed on from generation to generation,
learning and appreciating them can not only improve our language ability, but also contribute to
our understanding of Chinese culture. As for poets, Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi are my favorite
ones, whose works are still influencing us greatly.
To learn Chinese ancient poems well, we’d better grasp their meanings and read them aloud
repeatedly. Besides, it is advisable to recite as many classical poems as possible.
