“In my latest film, I act with my real-life love Kalika Chandana. I play the boy next door and the film is about his love life. It’s an interesting tole though I would not like to be limited to a lover-boy role in all my films. The frustrating thing is the interest people are taking in linking our personal lives with the romance on-screen.”
---- Prabir Amar
“I write fiction about science, but I think I’m really writing design fiction. I spend a lot of time designing imaginary industrial products in my brain and I’ve found that a designer’s approach is fruitful. It is very productive, authentic and more convincing.”
---- Bruce Sterling
“The job of the make-up designer is quite a lengthy process. I start with an initial idea and then I research it. Sometimes, I have to go into quite a lot of historical detail--not just make-up. In addition, many young people don’t realize that they have to work as apprentices (学徒) for five or six years. People would like to speed up that process but you can’t, so the best thing to do is to work with the designers and climb through the ranks.”
---- Ivana Primorace
“Hollywood has gone digital, and the old ways of creating visual effects are dead. As film editors we now sit in front of computer screens, editing entire films, while adding digitally-created sound. Film-goers can now lose themselves in special effects in movies that could never have been achieved with such a degree of realism using conventional methods.”
---- Gillian Roderick
21. What makes Prabir Amar upset?

B. People don’t like his latest film.

C.the film industry D.the design process

To ordinary people, the Australian Chestnut-crowned babblers sound like any other birds. However, to ornithologists (鸟类学家) it is a series of sounds which when combined, forms a unique language. These tiny birds are the first nonhuman species known to communicate using language.
Before exploring the language of the babbler, it is important to define what that means. According to language experts, communication or exchange of information can mean various things----from the aggressive roar of a lion to the never stopping buzzing of honeybees. Language, on the other hand, is the ability to piece together phonemes----letters like p, a, b, and t. The sounds are meaningless on their own, but when strung together in different arrangements, they transform into meaningful words. For example, b, a, t can be rearranged to form “bat”, “tab” or simply “at”.
The research that was led by Dr. Andy Russell, identified fifteen distinct calls that the birds make. Two, in particular, were of great interest because they seemed to share similar sounds that had been rearranged.
The first is the “flight” call, which is heard when the babblers are flying over their Australian habitat. It is a short, squeaky (短促尖叫的) sound that the scientists represented as “AB”. The other, known as the “prompt” call, is made when the birds arrive at the nest to feed their chicks. It is similar to the first call except it has one more sound in the beginning, which happens to be the last sound of the flight call.
The scientists are still puzzled about one thing. Why did the babblers decide to communicate using this primitive language instead of belting out complex constantly changing songs like other birds? Professor Russell speculates it could be that the smart birds figured out that rearranging sounds they already know to mean different things was easier than constantly creating songs with
new sounds!
25. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To compare different ways of communication.
B. To introduce how babblers communicate.
C. To show the importance of language.
D. To explain what language means.
26. What should the prompt call sound like?
A. ABA. B. ABB. C.BAA. D.BAB.
27. What does the underlined word “speculates” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Guess. B. Believe. C. Explains. D.Conclude.

The day finally came. I was very excited as I stood in line, waiting to receive my high school diploma. I looked around at the graduating class of our small Christian school and wondered how we had grown up so fast. After that weekend we would go our separate ways. Many planned on attending college far away, as I did. Others had jobs lined up and few were thinking about marriage.
Directly in front of me was a friend I’d known for six years; we had been on many adventures together. He grinned, looking a little smug(洋洋得意的). He and a couple of students had played one last trick before they graduated: The night before, they’d slipped into the principal’s home and used rolls of toilet paper to decorate his house and yard. I eyed the principal on the stage. He gave no indication that anything was wrong.
We moved slowly up in line. My friend walked across the stage and received his diploma. Then my name was called. I took a deep breath, nervously climbed the steps, crossed the stage under the hot lights and stopped in front of the principal. He gave me a big smile, shook my hand and handed me my diploma. I couldn’t wait to open the diploma case and find my name, certifying that I had graduated. However, when my friend opened his case, we all burst out laughing. Instead of a diploma, a single square of toilet paper was placed inside.
Our high school principal had a great sense of humor and took this opportunity to play a trick back on the boys. I thought they were required to clean his house and yard, but they got off easily. They were allowed to graduate.
Sometimes we get lucky when we do something wrong. However, sometimes we don’t. I often
wonder how those who do wrong things get rid of troubles. We have decisions to make throughout our lives. The surest way to stay out of trouble is to avoid it in the first place.
28. What would the writer do after graduating from high school?
A. Get married. B. Become a principal.
C.Continue his study. D. Find a regular job.
29. Why did the writer’s friend seem pleased before receiving his diploma?
A. Nobody had discovered his criminal behavior.
B. He was about to graduate from high school with great honors.
C. He had been praised by the principal for his achievements.
D. He had succeeded in teasing the principal.
30. How did the author’s friend feel the instant he opened his diploma case?
A. Astonished B. Embarrassed. C. Touched. D. Calm.
31.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Keeping away from Wrong Choices
B. Cherishing Every Opportunity in Life
C. Avoiding Making One Mistake Twice
D. Learning Valuable Lessons from Failure
D
The old traditional saying about sleeping with one eye open in an unfamiliar place may not be too far off the mark. Over the course of three experiments on 35 young and healthy volunteers, researchers in a new study measured brain activity during two continuous nights of sleep.
Sasaki and colleagues performed a series of lab tests by stimulating the left and then the right hemisphere(大脑的半球)with sounds. On the second night, there wasn’t any difference in reactions to tests between the left and right hemispheres, even during deep sleep. This suggests that there is a first-night-only effect specifically in one hemisphere of the brain during deep sleep, the authors conclude. The way participants responded to the sleep lab tests points to the potential for the brain to be on high alert for danger during the first night in unfamiliar surroundings. While this may be bad news for business travelers who regularly make brief overnight trips, it may not be as troublesome for people who go away for longer periods of time, Sasaki added by email. “Frequent travel may lead to unrestful sleep,” Sasaki said. “But if you stay for a few days at the same place, your sleep
might catch up.”
Some birds have been found to actually sleep with one eye open and one side of the brain awake when they’re in a dangerous setting, and some marine mammals have similar abilities, the authors note. But the new study focuses on healthy volunteers but not people with insomnia(失眠) or other sleep disorders, the authors note.
“The clinical implications haven’t been confirmed at the moment,” Finan, a psychiatry(精神医学)and behavioral health researcher said. “However, the level of specificity provided by these analyses could be an important first step in understanding what sleep disorders like insomnia arise from, which is thought to be driven in many patients by continuing having a lot of worries.” .
32. What do the underlined words “may not be too far off the mark” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. May be contradictory B. May make sense
C. May cause arguments D. May be disturbing
33. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. People are used to waking up and going to bed early when travelling.
B. Business travelers usually have a brief sleep at night.
C. It brings much trouble to those who stay far away from their homes.
D. It takes time for people to adapt themselves to a new environment.
34. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A. The researchers measure brain activity during two nights of sleep.
B. The researchers concentrate on volunteers with insomnia.
C. Some birds and marine mammals have the similar ability to sleep with one eye open.
D. Only 35 young volunteers participate in the study.
35. According to Finan, the study is helpful in ________.
A. comforting as many patients with sleep disorders as possible.
B. telling the effect of worries on sleep disorders.
C. finding out the cause of sleep disorders.
D. offering ways to free the patients from the suffering of sleep disorders.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
My children came home from school before spring break with homework again. It’s vocation. How would we adults feel if our boss hand us five hours of work to get done before we return from a vocation? 36
My children’s homework often interfered with our evening family plans. Even weekend plans are often dropped because of the amount of work they need to get done before Monday. They frequently are up past midnight finishing their homework. 37
The famous Duke University homework study concluded that students should get no more than 10 minutes per grade level, meaning a first-grader should be assigned yo to 10 minutes and the 12th-grader no more than 120 minutes. In our household, these guidelines are exceeded every year.
38 Many families spend time together, and kids are able to catch up with their friends and participate in activities they may not have time for when school is in session.
School vocations are also a time when some students get a break from homework. 39 The school board for the Princeton Public Schools in Princeton, New Jersey, recently decided to ban homework during the winter and spring vocation periods.
This generation of children is overweight and anxious. 40 They should have their weekends to be with their friends and family. And that should surely be true for their vocations.
A. We do this to our children all the time.
B. They do not get chance to relax and be kids.
C. Some parents don’t care about their kids’ homework.
D. Now that they are in high school, it does so constantly.
E. For many students, school breaks are a time to rest and recharge.
F. Then they must try their best to stay awake during school the next day.
G. Some school districts and teachers have stopped giving homework over breaks.

To arouse our interest in English learning and provide a platform for us to learn and practise English, our class has decided to set up Big Fun English Club.
We’ll gather in our classroom after school every Saturday, when a variety of activities will be organized, such as watching English movies, singing English songs, putting on English plays, having debates in English and so on.
On behalf of our class, I’m much honoured to warmly invite you to join us. I firmly believe that your appearance in our club will definitely inspire us all to become more
interested in learning and using English and therefore work harder at English. We’ll be expecting you in our class at 5:00 pm this Saturday.
Yours sincerely
