Dear Students,
I am honored to be your guest.
I would like to tell you about myself. I have been a news reporter for the past fifteen years. I chose this job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes difficult. I have seen famine, wars, earthquakes, poverty and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness.
In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were as young as four years old. They lived in the streets and survived by begging or stealing. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them. Within one year, she was looking after two hundred children. She clothed them, fed them, and taught them. She gave them hope.
Another time, I was in Turkey after a terrible earthquake. In one place. I found an old lady whose house was in ruins. Her son was missing and rescuer workers said there was no chance that he was still alive. But the old lady did not give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son. He was alive.
Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious condition. He had had twenty operations and spent nearly his whole life in hospital. I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming.
In life, we need role models that we can admire(赞美) and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice cream taster?
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers(制造商) to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career(事业) Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream ---- as well as for developing over 75 flavors(口味).
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No —there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses(评定) 60 ice cream samples(样品). He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12 °F. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir(搅拌) it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison look over the samples and grades(打分)each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy--- working at one cool job.
29. What is John Harrison’s job?

David Cameron is urging today’s youngsters to abandon French to concentrate on the tongue of the future---Mandarin(普通话)。
Cameron said: “I want Britain linked up to the world’s fast-growing economies. And that includes our young people learning the languages to seal (盖章)tomorrow’s business deals.”
“By the time the children born today leave school, China is to be the world’s largest economy. So it’s time to look beyond the traditional focus on French and German and get many more children to learn Mandarin.” To strengthen his message , he quoted Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, who said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head; if you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
Cameron said that a partnership between the British Council (英国文化协会) and Hanban(国家汉办) will double the number of Chinese language assistants in the UK by 2016 and provide increased funding to schools of offering Mandarin as a language choice. In a development of the UK-China School Partnership programme, funding will also be provided for 60 headteachers to make study visits to China in 2014.
In recent research the British Council found only 1% of the adult population speaks Mandarin to a level that allows them to conduct a basic conversation. Just 3,000 pupils in England, Wales and
Northern Ireland entered for Chinese languages GCSEs in 2013, putting it far behind the traditional choices of French with 177,000, Spanish with 91,000 and German with 62,000 entrants(加入者), as well as Urdu, Polish and Arabic.
Professor Dame Helen Wallace, the British Academy’s foreign secretary, said, “a lack of qualified (有资格的)teachers could be a barrier to improve its popularity.”
Laura Chan, one of the co-founders of a bilingual Mandarin-English primary school, said the Prime Minister’s announcement was good news for the status(地位) of Mandarin. She said, “It’s a great help. It will increase people’s awareness of Mandarin as a language they can learn.”
33. What is the text mainly talking about?
A. David Cameron has visited China for three days.
B. David Cameron calls for British students to learn Mandarin.
C. Chinese language is very popular with British people.
D. The cooperation is important between the UK and China.
34. Why does David Cameron urge students to learn Chinese?
A. Because Chinese will be a widely-used language in the world.
B. Because he thinks China will become the largest economy.
C. Because there are many Chinese people living in Britain.
D. Because only a few of British people can communicate in Chinese.
35. What is the purpose of David Cameron by quoting Mandela’s words in Paragraph3?

If my friend had not come to my rescue, I would have been drowned. Ever since then, I had come to know the importance of learning to swim. I decided to learn to swim. I didn’t attend to any training class but learned it all for myself. And now I have no difficulty swimming at all. Because the way I swim looks awkward (笨拙的), at least it can keep me floating.
