I was sitting at the roadside one evening, crying alone for some reason when suddenly, a boy came up to me and gave me a plastic rose, I remember the moment when I took the rose from his hand; I was smiling from ear to ear, whispering “I want to be like him” to myself as I watched him walking away.‎ From then on, I made it as my life mission to do random acts of kindness whenever I can. I was very determined to make other people smile. That was the only reason why I joined my school’s Red Crescent Society and became a volunteer. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks in the same way as I did. Whenever I do something nice to others, people around me will start to judge my actions. Often I will just keep quiet and ignore what they say, but every once in a while, they do drive me up the wall.‎ These people like to complain about how humans nowadays are lacking of humanities and compassion. However, when they actually see somebody doing a good deed in front of them, they ‎ start to question and criticize that person’s honesty. Perhaps it is the increasing crime rate and the never-ending rat race that caused them to be so suspicious to nice strangers. In other words, people nowadays have lost sight of the real meaning of kindness and just let it go unnoticed. That is why I think random acts of kindness are really important. These selfless acts are not only capable of bringing joy to the receivers but also to the givers. Because of this, I want to help spread the idea of these random acts to the whole world. I want to show the people how the little things they give could make a big difference in someone else’s life.‎ ‎21.What was the influence of the boy’s rose on the author?‎ A.It made the author feel ashamed. B.The author decided to follow suit.‎ C.The author said a lot to the boy. D.It gave the author strength and hope.‎ ‎22.Why did the author join the school’s Red Crescent Society?‎ A.To be a volunteer. B.To live a happy life.‎ C.To make others smile. D.To have a good time.‎ ‎23.Which can replace the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2?‎ A.Make me very angry. B.Bring difficulty to me.‎ C.Force me to climb the wall. D.Force me to the dead corner.‎ B If you’re showering every day, you’re probably over doing it. In fact, showering too often can actually hurt your body in the long run.‎ As Time’s public health column explains, daily showers are common due to social norms more than any proper health need. We connect being freshly showered with being attractive and pleasing, so we tend to showering often to feel better.‎ But what’s the ideal shower frequency? In terms of your health — not how you look or smell — probably once or twice a week, assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University, Dr. C.Brandon Mitchell says. “Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine,” he says. “A daily shower isn’t necessary.”‎ Of course, your situation may vary. If you have a job like car maintenance or construction, you’ll obviously have a visible layer of dirt you’ll need to wash off every single day. Similarly, if you work out every day, you may not have any health risks by washing every day, but you’ll still be smelly. If you feel like you need to take daily showers for aesthetic(审美的) reasons, at least make ‎ most of them light showers. “I tell patients who shower daily not to soap their whole bodies,” Mitchell says. Hit your pits, butt and groin, which are the areas that produce strong smells. The rest of your body doesn’t need much soaping, he says.‎ Too much time spent under the hot water can dry out your skin, cause cracks(裂纹)that can lead to infections or germs getting into your skin, and take away the natural oils on your skin that help keep it healthy. So, even if you’re aiming to be your most presentable, be sure to keep it moderate to avoid hurting your skin in the long run.‎ ‎24.According to the passage, why do most people shower daily?‎ A.To add to attraction. B.To wash off dirt. C.To meet health need. D.To get relaxation.‎ ‎25.Which of the following people might be advised to shower once or twice a week?‎ A.Car maintainer. B.Office staff. C.Building workers. D.Gym-goers.‎ ‎26.The underlined phrase “light showers” in Para. 4 refers to the showers in which ________.‎ A.bright lights are equipped B.less hot water is used C.gentle skin touches are allowed D.a little soaping is involved ‎27.What is the best title for the text?‎ A.Showering Daily Becomes a Custom B.Daily Shower Does No Good to You C.You Probably Needn’t Shower Daily D.Protect Your Skin When Showering C Jonny Jones was a nice and popular boy, who everyone loved. He was so much fun, so good and so kind to everyone that they treated him wonderfully. But as everything he needed was given to him without asking, Jonny became aweed. He was so spoiled by everyone that he couldn’t stand any hardship.‎ One day Johnny heard a mother saying to her son “Come on, my boy, get up and stop crying. You are behaving like Johnny Jones.” That made Johnny feel very ashamed. But he was sure that he would prefer to be known as a good boy rather than a fool. Worried, he spoke to his father about all this, though he was afraid that maybe he would be laughed at for having such worries. His father, far from laughing at Johnny, told him that a teacher had taught him a secret trick to turn him into the toughest boy off all. “Eat a candy less, study a minute more, and count to five before crying.” Johnny asked, “Just that? ” “Yes, just that,” said his father, “It’s very simple, but I warn you that it ‎ won’t be easy.”‎ Johnny was happy like a bird, ready to follow the advice. He went to see his mother, and she noticed how happy he was when she offered him candies. “One candy less”, thought Johnny, so he only took one. That afternoon he had another chance to put it into practice by studying one minute more. The result was that he missed the first minute of his favorite program! But having achieved this gave him a great feeling of satisfaction. The same happened when he ran up against the corner of the kitchen table. He only managed to count to four before crying, but that was left deeply in his mother’s memory.‎ Over the following days Johnny kept using the motto in his life as his father told him. And the more he put this into practice ,the easier it got. Before long he realized that he could also do things that would seem impossible before.‎ ‎28.The underlined word "weed" in the first paragraph refers to ____.‎ A.a person with a strong v/ill ‎ B.a person with a weak character C.a person who isn't popular with everyone ‎ D.a person who changes his behavior according to the situation ‎29.What made Jonny Jones decide to change himself? ‎ A.A mother's words. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.‎ ‎“You are employed,” he said. “Give me your e-mail address and I’ll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.”‎ The man replied, “But I don’t have a computer, neither an e-mail.”‎ ‎“I’m sorry,” said the HR manager. “If you don’t have an e-mail, that means you do not exist. And he who doesn’t exist cannot have the job. ”‎ The man left with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do, with only ten dollars in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10kg tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes from door to door. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home happily with 60 dollars. ‎ The man realized that he could survive in this way, and started to go every day earlier, and returned late. Thus, his money doubled ortripledevery day. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles. Five years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers(零售商) in the US.‎ He started to plan his family’s future and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker(保险业经纪人) and chose a protection plan. ‎ When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his e-mail. The man replied, “I don’t have an e-mail.”‎ The broker answered curiously, “You don’t have an e-mail, and yet have succeeded to build an empire(帝国). Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e-mail?” The man thought for a while and replied, “Yes, I’d be an office boy at Microsoft!”‎ ‎32.Why can’t the man have the job at Microsoft?‎ A.Because he was lazy. One January, I officiated (主持) at two funerals for two elderly women.36.. At the first home, the son of the deceased (已故) woman said, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son said, “If only I had not insisted her going to Florida, she would be alive today.37.. It is my fault.”‎ When things don’t turn out as we would like them to, we tend to assume that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course, for example, keeping mother at home, would have turned out better.38.‎ There seem to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense—there is a reason for everything that happens.‎ The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen.39.. A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks.40.. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely abandon that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.‎ A.That long airplane ride was more than she could take.‎ B.After all, how could it have turned out any worse?‎ C.Life and dead is an unsolved mystery.‎ D.The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.‎ E. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him.‎ F. Both died a natural death.‎ G.
