Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that.‎ The trend, then, was toward the "penny paper"-a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.‎ This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible (but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer's office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny-usually two or three cents was charged-and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase "penny paper " caught the public's fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny.‎ This new trend of newspapers for "the man on the street" did not begin well. Some of the early ventures(企业)were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.‎ ‎24.Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?‎ A. Academic. B. Inexpensive. C. Unattractive. D. Confidential.‎ ‎25.What did street sales mean to newspapers?‎ A. They would be priced higher. B. They could have more readers. ‎ C. They would disappear from cities. D. They could regain public trust.‎ ‎26.Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at?‎ A. Local politicians. B. Young publishers. ‎ C. Rich businessmen. D. Common people.‎ ‎27.What can we say about the birth of the penny paper?‎ A. It was a difficult process. B. It was a temporary success.‎ C. It was a robbery of the poor. D. It was a disaster for printers.‎ C I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don't remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.‎ I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say," I can't believe what's printed in the newspaper this morning," made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.‎ This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said," The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf," I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.‎ Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A's on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn't enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.‎ Yet, now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don't have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.‎ ‎ I just read to relax.‎ We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.‎ ‎28. According to Paragraph 3,the author's reading of road signs indicates___________‎ A. her growing desire to know the world around her.‎ B. her unique way to locate herself C. her eagerness to develop her reading ability D. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules ‎29. What was the author's view on factual reading?‎ A. It would help her update test-taking skills.‎ B. It would allow much room for free thinking.‎ C. It would help shape a realistic and serious attitude to life.‎ D. It would provide true and objective information.‎ ‎30. The author takes novel reading as a way to___________.‎ A. explore a fantasy land. B. get away from a confusing world C. develop a passion for leaning. D. learn about the adult community ‎31. What could be the best title for the passage?‎ A. The Magic of Reading. B. The Pleasure of ‎Reading C. Growing Up with Reading. D. Reading Makes a Full Man ‎ D ‎“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球)club.‎ I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up, “Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.”‎ I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer ‎ responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.‎ Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.‎ In that sense, I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I’d freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?‎ ‎32.What can we infer about the parent from her reply in paragraph l?‎ A. She knows little about the club. B. She just doesn't want to volunteer.‎ C. She isn't good at sports. D. She's unable to meet her schedule.‎ ‎33.What does the underlined phrase “tug at the heartstrings” in paragraph 2 mean?‎ A. Appeal to feeling. B. Encourage team work.‎ C. Promote good deeds. D. Provide advice.‎ ‎34. What can we learn about the parent from paragraph 3 ?‎ A. She gets interested in lacrosse. B. She is proud of her kids.‎ C. She’ll work for another season. D. She becomes a good helper.‎ ‎35. Why does the author like doing volunteer work?‎ A. It gives her a sense of duty. B. It enables her to work hard.‎ C. It brings her material rewards. D. It makes her very happy.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Family conflict (冲突) affects everyone. 36 , you may want to mediate (调解) to make everyone’s life easier. It’s worth it to try to smooth things over.‎ ‎ ◆ 37 It can be difficult to look at family situations objectively, so before trying to mediate disagreement, make sure you look at all sides of the argument. While you shouldn’t take sides when trying to mediate, you don’t want anyone to think you’re overlooking their point of view. Take some time to think about why everyone feels wronged or hurt in the situation.‎ ‎ ◆Encourage everyone to control their feelings. It’s not uncommon for tensions to run high when discussing family conflict. 38 Try to control the emotional outbursts as much as you can. While everyone has a right to their personal feelings, make it clear their feelings must be expressed in an appropriate, productive way.‎ ‎ ◆Try hard for forgiveness. Even if you were not directly involved in the argument, you were probably affected by the atmosphere in some way. Choose forgiveness. Remember, you can’t control someone else’s actions but you can control your own response. You can also encourage other family members to forgive. 39 ‎ ‎ ◆Work on fixing the relationships. 40 , you can offer suggestions how family members could better treat one another in the future. Think about what has been said during mediation. Look for areas where change is needed. You should also agree to work actively on letting go of the conflict. For example, “For the next couple of months, let’s agree not to bring this up.” ‎ A. Have a healthy discussion B. Think about everyone’s view C. Though it’s not your job to offer exact courses of action D. There may be times when people get sensitive and angry E. If there is an ongoing argument between family members F. If a family member reacts very violently to an unimportant affair G. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”‎ ‎“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”‎ ‎“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.‎ But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.‎ Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he ‎ learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.‎ A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.‎ 注意:‎ ‎1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;‎ ‎2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;‎ Paragraph 1: ‎ Robert was fast sinking.‎ ‎_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ Paragraph 2:‎ Thus, Robert’s life was saved.‎ ‎__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ 英语答案 第一部分 听力 ‎1-5: BCBCA 6-10: ABCAA 11-15: ABACB 16-20: CBCAA 阅读21-23 CCD 24-27CBDA 28-31 ADBC 32-35BADD 36-40EBDGC ‎ 完形 41-45CDACB 46-50ACDAA 51-55BBADB ‎ 语法填空:56.to 57.but/yet 58.healthiest 59.a 60.which ‎ 61.weight 62.causing 63.To avoid 64.regularly 65.is made 单词拼写:66. apology 67. donated 68. beneficial 69. envied 70. shallow 应用文 Dear Jack,‎ ‎ How is everything going? It seemed as if Robert would be drowned. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time. By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the shore.‎ Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.‎ 听力原文 Text 1 ‎ M: How would you like your meat cooked, ma’am? Let me buy the tickets for us to thank you.‎ Text 10 ‎ M: Today is the third day of my week’s holiday in Paris. The journey here was very long and I felt tired because I didn’t get much sleep on the plane. But I was excited when I got in the taxi and I could see the Eiffel‎ ‎Tower from the window. It really is quite an impressive sight. The weather here is a little bit cold, and sometimes rainy. So I had to buy a new umbrella because I forgot to bring one. The traffic is very bad, so usually I like to walk if I can. But it’s a big city, so it can get very tiring after a few hours. The food here is delicious, but I don’t like the breakfast served at the hotel. However, I am so lucky because there is a nice bakery close to where I am staying. They have fresh bread every morning and the shopkeeper always greets me with a big smile. I have visited most of the famous places, but I couldn’t get into the Louvre, because I went too late last night and the tickets were all sold out. I really hope I can go today, because I’m a big fan of art galleries and I must see the painting of Mona Lisa. It’s the real reason I came here.‎
