I want to tell about my admiration for my high-school music teacher, Dell Frickey. She was strict, patient and confident. She ran an excellent music program, and her team won prizes at all sorts of state, national, and international competitions. I didn’t realize at first how fortunate I was to have had her as a teacher for three years. Her enthusiasm(热情)for music and art was like a breath of fresh air for me. She was nothing less than a living inspiration. Because of her I wanted to live surrounded by musical instruments, and by people singing and performing. At that time, I didn’t see how I could possibly achieve such a life as a musician. A dream like that didn’t seem realistic to me. I was a poor girl with an alcoholic(酒鬼) father, and a mom who had died before I entered high school, leaving me with two younger brothers to take care of. Most of my youthful freedom died with my mother. After graduation, I turned down a music scholarship and joined the army so that I would get pay and send it home to support my younger brothers. But I never forgot music. The hours that I’d spent learning and memorizing countless songs encouraged me to dream of finding a place for myself in music one day. And a few years later I made it to university, and studied music after all. Mrs. Frickey is the only teacher I remember by name. I can recall her facial expressions when she was pleased or displeased, and the shapes of her hands and fingers, which seemed to be in constant motion. She isn’t a beautiful woman, but she has a really beautiful soul.
21. Put the following in the order in which they occurred.
①The author refused a music scholarship and joined the army.
②The author entered university and studied music.
③Mrs. Frickey became the author’s music teacher.
④The author’s mom died, leaving her and her brothers.
A. ③④①② B. ③①②④ C. ④③①② D. ④①③②
22. Why did the author join the military after graduation?
A. Because she wanted to leave her alcoholic father.
B. Because her dream was to become a woman soldier.
C. Because she lacked the money for further education.
D. Because she wanted to earn money to support her brothers.
23. We learn from the passage that Mrs. Frickey ______.
A. had a passion for music B. was the author’s only music teacher
C. helped the author a lot when she was in difficulty D. won a great number of prizes alone
B
MUMBAI, India —The children in their party clothes on the stage were very excited when they received the award. And the two of them said, "It’s unbelievable!"
Nine-year-old Rubina Ali, and Azharudd in Ismail, 10, were living a very different life and apparently loving every minute of it. The two, some of the child stars of the Oscar-winning movie, Slum dog Millionaire(《贫民窟的百万富翁》), knew the Indian slums very well. That was where they grew up, and it is where they will return at the end of their Hollywood dream trip.
But before going back home, there was an interview with the host, Ryan Seacrest. During the interview they smiled and repeated their disbelief in what was happening to them. To their surprise, their movie won first place in the Oscars. When the two received the award, it was late morning in the children’s home city of Mumbai, where their family, friends and many fellow residents of the slums watched the result from Hollywood.
"I don’t really know what the Oscars are," Rubina’s mother said. "I’m just glad my daughter looks happy, though she told me she missed Indian food."
"Our children lead a dog’s life," Rubina’s mother said, pointing out the rubbish everywhere, the open drains (下水道) and the lack of education opportunities.
In a few days they will be back in Mumbai and back in the slums that are their home. Fortunately, according to media reports, the movie’s director, Danny Boyle, has promised to help the children he chose from the slum and make sure they will go to a proper school.
The two don’t need to worry about their daily lives because of the Oscar success of Slum dog Millionaire. But the poverty and lack of opportunity -the central theme of the movie-is always all around.
24. Which of the following is NOT true about the two children?
A. They were both excited about receiving the award.
B. They had been having a difficult life in India.
C. They were interviewed before they went back home.
D. They were the only two child winners of the movie, Slum dog Millionaire.
25. When the children attended the Oscar ceremony in Hollywood, their family and friends
were_________.
A. doing what they did as usual B. watching TV in Mumbai
C. watching the movie Slum dog Millionaire D. having a family party
26. What will happen to the two children after they return to India?
A. They will go back to the miserable life as before. B. They will act in movies as famous actors.
C. They will leave school to learn acting. D. They will have a better education.
27. According to the author, the value of the movie is that ________.
A. it has been given an Oscar Award B. it has made the children famous
C. it has become popular all over the world D. its central theme has become known to the public

Communication is an essential part of human existence. However, not all of us are born with great personal relationship skills. In fact, a lot of people are afraid of talking to others or in front of a crowd for several reasons including physical deformities(残疾), lack of knowledge, and emotional hindrances(障碍). If you want to get over your poor conversation habits, here are some useful tips you should practice:
Talk about interesting general subjects. Topics that are too specific may not be appealing to everyone. Current issues or news items are perfect starters because you can be sure that other people are aware of them.
Do not be afraid of conversational taboos(禁忌). However, know your limitations. Topics such as religion and politics can be discussed without debating. Often, key issues, especially those that take sides, make the best conversations.
Discuss, do not argue. State facts and opinions politely, but do not force other people to accept what you believe in. At the same time, be open to their viewpoints. After all, the purpose of a conversation is to exchange views and information.
Listen. Like relationships, conversations should have a give-and-take pattern. Allow other people to speak their opinions without constant interruptions. Pay attention and focus on every detail they say. An interest in another person’s point of view is absolutely essential.
Stay with the subject. Do not move from topic to topic. Try to explore an issue with reasonable thoroughness.
Say what you think. Do not be afraid to agree or disagree on a particular issue. A certain amount of honest disagreement establishes mutual (相互的) respect.
Do not panic when there is a pause. You do not have to rush in to fill every little pocket of silence. Pauses are a necessary part of every good conversation. They refresh (恢复) the communicators’ minds and provide an opportunity to collect one’s thoughts before taking part in the discussion again.
28. Which of the following can be thought of as a poor conversation habit?
A. Listening and constantly breaking in to discuss. B. Opening up an interesting general topic.
C. Telling others your opinion when you disagree. D. Discussing with others based on facts.
29. We can infer that when communicating with other people, you should avoid ________.
A. honest disagreement B. conversational taboos
C. changing their opinions D. staying with the same topic
30. Pauses are necessary for people in a conversation to ______.
A. establish mutual respect B. explore an issue thoroughly
C. prepare for the next topic D. avoid arguing with others
31. By writing the passage, the author intends to tell us ______.
A. how to get rid of emotional hindrances B. reasons for poor conversation
C. how to communicate with others D. useful tips on conversation topics
D
These days, finding true love online is so common that there’s no need to use that old "we
met through mutual friends" excuse. Plenty of people have found true love on sites like Match. Comande -Harmony—but now, even animals are getting in on the act.
Using something called a "studbook"(血统簿), zoo officials can list the characteristics of endangered species online, in the hope of finding a mate for the rare animal. The characteristics mainly give the animals’age and weight, which will help zoo officials to match up each animal with a suitable partner from a distant zoo.
"Studbooks are the key to our long-term breeding (繁殖) plans," John Lehnhardt, animal operations director at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, told ABC News. "We want to ensure that these endangered species are here for the future."
But studbooks are often hard to read. They often don’t contain all the necessary information that could help zoo officials determine whether a pair would make a good match.
To change this, around 150 zoos and aquariums have united together to create Zoo Information Management Systems (ZIMS), a huge database containing detailed information about species available for breeding. The ZIMS database isn’t available to all zoos yet.
As far as animals are concerned, the studbook isn’t only a way to find some fun. In many cases, it could be a matter of life or death for an entire species. Luckily, the studbooks seem to be doing a great job. For example, a pair of elephants have been placed together in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
"The female elephant is now living with a very handsome young male," Lehnhardt said. "We have put these two together in the hope that we’ll have some success."
32. The underlined part "getting in on the act" in the first paragraph means "_________".
A. acting online B. starting to do the same thing
C. taking part in an activity D. getting fun online
33. Why did the 150 zoos and aquariums create ZIMS?
A. To call on people to protect the rare animals. B. To offer information to all zoos.
C. To offer more detailed information of the rare animals. D. To get in touch with each other.
34. What can we learn about the studbooks from the passage?
A. They are important for long-term animal breeding plans.
B. They can be read easily only by zoo officials.
C. They contain all the necessary information of the animals.
D. They don’t have much effect on the animals.
35. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Protecting Endangered Animals
B. Animals’ Characteristics Are Appearing Online
C. Looking for Partners for Endangered Animals Online
D. Looking for Endangered Animals Around the World
第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (共5小题:每小题2分,共10分)
