Suddenly, above each mountaintop, a name appears on the sky. The words are not written in smoke by skywriting planes. The words are actually not in the sky at all. They come from tiny computers in contact lenses(隐形眼镜).‎ Computers have become smaller and smaller over the decades. The first computers filled houses. Transistors(晶体管) and then chips allowed computers to become small enough to fit on a desktop, then a laptop, and finally a phone. When experimenting with further reductions in size, developers often have to deal with the limits of human eyesight, which control how small the computers can be and still present visible information.‎ One new solution employs microprojectors(微型投影机) to create a readable display for tiny computers. These machines project computer information onto any surface. Though an impressive breakthrough, there are potential problems. Such public displays can lead to privacy concerns; most people do not want their information displayed on a wall for everyone to see. Besides, these projectors are extremely expensive, and their screens give users headaches. ‎ Babak Parviz, a researcher at the University of Washington, created another solution:‎ ‎ inventing a screen visible only to a person wearing a contact lens. Parviz created a computer in a contact lens that uses the wearer’s field of vision as the display. To create the display, Parviz took ordinary soft contact lenses with a wirelessly controlled system. At some point, Parviz says, it will be possible to connect the lens to a remote personal computer device such as a cellphone or a laptop. By looking in a certain direction, the wearer sends the computer visual information about what he or she sees. The device then uses this information to point out the names of peaks.‎ These contact lenses are inserted and removed in much the same way as ordinary contact lenses. In addition, the computers in the lenses won’t block the wearer's sight at all. Although now the computers are not on lenses treating eyesight problems, Parviz hopes that someday the technology will progress to that level.‎ ‎24. The contact lenses in the text can ________.‎ A. treat eyesight problems B. offer beautiful views of nature ‎ C. project information on wall surface D. show information about what wearers see ‎25. According to Paragraph 3, the microprojectors ________.‎ A. put people’s privacy at risk B. save computer information C. cause serious illnesses D. support users’ needs ‎26.What does the underlined words “that level” refer to in the text?.‎ A. Further reducing computers’ size B.Creating the visual information.‎ C. Treating eyesight problems D. Blocking the wearer’s sight ‎ ‎27. What might be the best title for the passage?‎ A. Tiny Computers, Amazing Sights B. Smaller Lenses, Closer Views C. Progress towards Clearness ‎ D. Road to the Small World ‎ ‎ C ‎ Psychologists tell us that we are what we think ourselves to be. Our self-image defines for us what we believe we can and cannot do. Each of us over the years has built up beliefs about ourselves. Unconsciously, our pictures of who we are have been formed by past experiences. Our successes and failures, what others have told us and what we think people believe about us all help form impressions of who we think we are. Because self-image is so important in our growth, it is important to examine our concepts of self in order to reach our full potential.‎ ‎ A danger is that we often accept as true the wrong images of self. An example is a student who sees himself as “poor in English.” He can be heard to say, “Oh, I’ve never been good in English classes.” Chances are the student failed in an English test at one time in the past. Rather than saying “I failed a test; what can I learn from it ?” he began thinking, “I’m a failure; I’ll never do well in English.” or, perhaps his parents or friends made negative remarks to him about his grades. In this case the student became what he thought he was.‎ ‎ Changing our self-image is possible. Some psychologists suggest we begin to change our self-image by mentally picturing ourselves performing well at some task. For instance, subjects would sit quietly and imagine themselves throwing darts at a bull’s-eye (靶心) on a target. Over a period of weeks their dart game improved. That ‘poor’ English student might have found he was much better in the subject than he thought if he had tried seeing himself as a better student.‎ The point of changing self-image is not to develop an image of ourselves that is not real. To try to become something we really aren’t is just as wrong as living the unrealistic, inferior (低级的) image we may have.‎ ‎ The aim is to find the “real” self, to bring our mental images of ourselves in line with our true potential.‎ ‎ Another important part of changing self-concept is to not think too much about past mistakes. Don’t let failures do harm. Our errors or shame over mistakes are necessary steps in learning. It is all right to make mistakes. But when they have taught us what we did wrong, we should forget them and not dwell on them. Sometimes we keep remembering our failures or mistakes and feel guilty or embarrassed about them. In this way we are conquered by them, and then we develop a fear. That’s exactly what happened to the “poor” English student .‎ ‎28. What does Paragraph 2 mainly discuss? ‎ A. How a poor self-image develops. ‎ B. How people accept self-images as true.‎ C. How poor grades affect the forming of one’s self-image.‎ D. How others’ negative remarks form one’s poor self-image.‎ ‎29. The author suggests that “poor” English student should _______. ‎ A. treasure his parents’ or friends’ negative remarks about his grades B. think he failed one test and can not learn English well C. keep calm and try imagining himself performing well at the test D. remember well his failure and promise not to make mistakes again ‎30. Which phrase can best replace the underlined “dwell on” in Paragraph 5?‎ A. settle them down. B. think them over. ‎ C. depend on them. D. live on them.‎ ‎31. What is the author’s attitude towards “mistake”?‎ A. We should keep remembering mistakes.‎ B. Reflecting on mistakes helps change self-image. ‎ C. We should positively take advantage of our mistakes. ‎ D. Developing a fear of mistakes helps change self-image.‎ D About 15 years ago, I taught A Problem from Hell, a book on killing, to a group of 18- and 19-year-olds in a mid-west university in the US. In my class there was a young man who had spent his boyhood in Bosnia as NATO bombed his hometown. My other students, amazed by his connection to the killing in the textbook, asked him what it was like to grow up in a war-zone. “A pretty normal childhood as you had here,” he said. “We played cards inside a lot, and when there was no bombing we kicked a ball in the street.”‎ In the past few years, the world has seen a rapid increase in refugees (难民), with the number hitting 60 million. Viet Thanh Nguyen’s story collection The Refugees reminds us that literature is news that stays news. Set in the Vietnamese communities in California as well as in Vietnam, the stories do not aim to surprise us with new twists or shock us with wonderful details, as war and refugee stories could easily choose to do. Rather, like the young man from Bosnia, Nguyen’s characters tell these stories because they are the only ones known to them.‎ Included in the collection are two of the most touching pieces, both about siblings (兄弟或姊妹) separated by geography and history. In “Black-Eyed Women”, the story teller, a young Vietnamese woman, is visited by the ghost of her elder brother, who died young on the boat when the family took flight from the war. The tale of love and loss, violence and violation, may not be unfamiliar to the reader, but the determination of the brother’s ghost (he has taken decades to swim across the Pacific to reach America) and the sister’s abandoning herself to a half death make the story lasting.‎ As an echo, the closing story, “Fatherland”, explores a more complex situation between two siblings. ‎ The story teller, a young Vietnamese woman, meets her half-sister, visiting from the US for the first time. Adding to the tension is the fact that her father has named the the story teller and her siblings after his first set of children. Two sisters, one American and one Vietnamese, yet named the same by the father – it may sound strange, but isn’t it the fate many refugees have to face: a life left behind, that could have been theirs; and a life in an adopted country. ‎ The collection is full of refugees, whether from outside or from a deeper, inside conflict between even those who are closest to each other. With anger but not despair, with harmony but not unrealistic hope, and with humour that is not used to insult anyone, Nguyen has breathed life into many unforgettable characters.‎ ‎32. The first paragraph is intended to ______.‎ ‎ A. describe the boring life of war victims B. appeal to the readers to help war victims ‎ C. criticize NATO’s killing of innocent people D. introduce the story collection The Refugees ‎33. It's very foolish of you to smoke when you've got a cold.‎ M: Very well, dear. You're quite right.‎ W: Look, here's some boiling water. Do as I tell you now. I've put something in the water that'll do you a lot of good. Put your nose over the water. That's right. Breathe in deeply. It'll do you a lot of good.‎ M: It smells nice.‎ ‎(Text 9)‎ W: Excuse me. Do you live here?‎ M: Yes.‎ W: Oh, well, do you know where the English Language Institute is?‎ M: Ah, yes. I think I know where it is. Do you have a car?‎ W: No, I'm on foot.‎ M: Well, as you go out of the station, just continue along the road until you come to the second crossing and then turn left into King Street.‎ W: Yes.‎ M: Then walk down the street just a bit and take the first turning on the right. And keep walking until you come to the park.‎ W: A park, yes.‎ M: Well ,let's see. Walk through the park. As you get to the end of the path you will see two small roads. Take the road on the right and the English Language Institute is at the end of the road. You can't miss it.‎ W: Thank you so much.‎ ‎(Text 10)‎ Skyscrapers have become very common in Europe. Cities such as Frankfort, Madrid, Valencia, Malmo and Paris, all have very tall buildings under construction. However, the center of the world for skyscrapers is neither Europe nor America. The tallest buildings in the world are being built in Asia and the Middle East. At more than 500 meters tall, the tallest building in the world is Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan. However, when completed in 2008, the Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates will rise 162 stories and more than 800 meters. Another building in Dubai is planned to ‎ be over 1,200meters tall. That's about three times as tall as the Empire State Building. Skyscrapers are part of our future for many reasons. For one, they require less land to build and use less electricity and other resources. Plus, people who live in cities with high rises are less likely to own a car. In New York and London, for example, the majority of residents do not drive. Still, a lot of people think that really tall buildings ruin the look of a city. What do you think?‎
