Sometimes when we are in our darkest hour, something completely unexpected happens that can
give us a little bit of hope and comfort.
Jessica was a healthy woman. One day, she woke up and something was not right. After she was
sent to the hospital, her heart rate slowed by nearly 50 percent. It took nine days for doctors to zero in
on what was causing her problem.
After several weeks, Jessica was able to move her lips. Staff noticed this and introduced Jessica
to Consuelo Gonzalez, a professional lip reader. Consuelo can understand what people are saying by
the shape their lips make. She can also understand how annoying it is to not be able to communicate
because she has been completely deaf since the age of 8.
For a few hours each week, Jessica could have long conversations with Consuelo, diving into the
ocean of words she dearly missed. Through Consuelo, Jessica asked the doctors and nurses questions
she had long wanted answers to. She also talked to Consuelo about the vivid dreams she was mixing
up with reality.
In fact, there are other ways for Consuelo to earn a living by reading lips, but she says helping
patients separate horrible dreams from reality is the most rewarding way she can use her unique skill.
“What is really wonderful is being able to use this skill to create healing and to create communication
between human beings. That’s what feels good. That’s what’s the best: Love.”
After four and a half months in the hospital, Jessica finally recovered. Consuelo was there,
holding Jessica’s hands. Jessica eventually went back to work as a math professor. After her
experience she wrote a new living will. One thing she added is that if she ever becomes incapacitated
like this again, she is never to be left alone.
4. What did Consuelo do for Jessica?

Taking a shower is relaxing. You can hum a song, daydream or think about
nothing, leaving the real world behind you. But did you know that showering can
also benefit your mind?
A research by Scott Barry Kaufman, a psychologist from Yale University
interviewed over 3,000 people around the world. It turned out that nearly two-thirds
of the interviewees said they had experienced new ideas in the shower and were more likely to have
them in the shower than at work.
So why does a simple shower have such magic power? Science can explain it.
Showering can help to raise our level of dopamine(多巴胺 ), a hormone closely related to our
creativity. “People vary in terms of their level of creativity according to the activity of dopamine,”
explained Alice Flaherty, a famous American neuroscientist. “Taking a warm shower can make us feel
relaxed and therefore make the dopamine level rise and bring‘Aha!’ moment to us.”
Besides the chemical changes, showering may give you a break from what you feel you have
been stuck with. Especially when you have thought hard all day about a problem, jumping into the
shower can keep you from the outside world so that you can focus on your inner feelings and
memories.
Compared with sitting in front of a computer, taking a shower is something we do less frequently
in our daily life. When showering, we get a fresh experience with the change of location, temperature
and humidity.“New and unexpected experiences can lead to positive changes in thinking,” explained
Kaufman. “Getting off the couch and jumping in the shower may create a distance and force you to
think from a new point of view.”
Showering allows us to enjoy the creative juices of our minds, but it needn't just be the bathroom
where you get your inspiration. For instance, Gertrude Stein, a female American writer and poet, got
4
new ideas by driving around a farm and stopping at different cows until she found the one that most
inspired her. So try to create your own way to free your mind.
8.According to the article, what changes can showering cause?
A.Bringing the terrible moment to us. B.
Setting the creative part of the brain free. C.
Leading to boredom or tiredness. D.
Increasing the level of dopamine.
9.If one has focused on something all day, showering can help .
A.turn one's attention inward
B.draw one's attention to the outside world
C.make an important breakthrough D.
many chemical changes to take place
10.According to Kaufman, why can taking showers make us creative?
A.Because taking showers happens more often.
B.Because taking showers can make us acquire a fresh experience, inspiring us.
C.Because nothing but taking showers can get our inspiration.
D.Because taking showers can help us try something unexpected.
11.The example of Gertrude Stein in the last paragraph is used to .
A.encourage readers to find their own ways of getting inspiration
B.point out to readers that it's hard to get inspiration C.
explain how to link inspiration with readers' daily lives D.
show that creativity often comes from strange places
D
As the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” That’s because this healthy food
choice is supposed to be full of nutrients. The apple at the supermarket, though, might be so old that it
has lost many of its nutrients. But soon there might be a way to check the quality of fruit by scanning
it.
Scientists at Food+Future coLAB have come up with the idea of a hand-held spectrometer (分光
仪) that scans food. The machine will work by shining infrared (红外线的) light on a piece of produce.
By measuring how chemicals in the fruit or vegetable take in the light, the scanner can recognize the
food’s chemical makeup.
“The machine can tell you exactly how old an apple is, how many calories it contains, what
nutrients are present inside it, and even small differences in taste,” Greg Shewmaker of Food+Future
coLAB recently said.
For the new machine to be useful to consumers, researchers first need to create a database that
contains possible chemicals for a particular type of fruit, like an apple, for example. Scientists will
5
need to scan lots of pieces to collect this data. The information collected will allow the scanners to tell
customers the quality of fruit.
Once consumers know what’s inside an apple, they can decide if they want to buy it. Knowing
fruit quality may also affect how a store prices produce. “We can price produce based on the
nutritional value,” Shewmaker explained.
Food+Future coLAB has already created a working model of its machine. It says you may see
one in your local supermarket within the next few years. Then deciding whether you’ve picked the
healthiest fruit will be just a quick scan.
12. Why does the author mention the saying about apple at the beginning?
A. To prove that the apple is full of nutrients.
B. To introduce the topic of the fruit scanner.
C. To advise people to keep healthy by eating apples.
D. To state that the apple is the most tasty among fruits.
13. What do we know about the spectrometer?
A. It is powered by infrared light.
B. It is not useful in many customers’ eyes.
C. It can help customers decide which fruit to buy.
D. It can improve the quality of fruit and vegetables.
14. According to Shewmaker, what’s a spectrometer’s influence on a store?
A. It makes a store more attractive.
B. It provides price reference for produce.
C. It enriches customers’ knowledge about food nutrition. D.
It creates a database about the chemical makeup of fruit.
15. What would be the best title for this text?
A. The Fruit Scanner B. The Priced Fruit
C. How to Scan Fruits D. How to Pick Fruits

Senior Three student will face the question after they pass by the college entrance examination.
“Should I choose a good major and a good university?” Some students prefer to consider majors first
so that they can learn which they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them take their
favorite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believes that the environment is
important to one’s development. They also believe that students graduated from leading universities
are often more likely to find good jobs. In my opinion, a best choice is to choose a good major at a
good university. But if they can’t obtain both, the first thing to consider was a good major. Because no
matter where they study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if they try their best.
