Since 2017, the AOPS Online School has provided a special learning experience for excellent students studying online. We offer math courses, programming courses, and special courses to prepare students for math and science competitions. Most of our courses meet weekly for live classes, and have different types of weekly homework.
Excellent Teachers
Our teachers were excellent math students themselves. Many won major math prizes and got degrees from schools like MIT, Harvard , Stanford and Princeton. They understand from their teaching experience what our students need, and they serve as role models for students who want similar success.
Live Instruction

which of these reviews and questions to share with everyone and which to discuss with no one else present. This allows teachers to guide public discussion while discussing students' personal misunderstandings with no one else present as they appear.
Active Learning
The best way to learn is settling hard problems, by settling the problems themselves. not by watching passively (被动地)as others do the work.In our classroom. students settle each problem with teachers asking questions as guidance.
Complete Progress Tracking
Each course includes a detailed report of student progress. Our team tells students about upcoming classes. reading tasks and homework. Parents can also sign up for reporting. At the end of each subject course, we can provide a course grade upon request.

In the far north, well above the Arctic Circle in Alaska, ground squirrels (地松鼠) are like little balls within a deep hole in the ground. If you look at one , you might think it is dead. The squirrel is as cold as ice.Its body temperature is -2°C. Its heart beats only once every 15 seconds. Its breathing stops for minutes at a time .
It's not exanimate, of course-just hibernating (冬眠). But spring is on its way to Alaska. As the days are becoming longer and the ground becomes warm , the Arctic ground squirrels will be warm , too. At first, the increase will be almost too small to notice. "You see them begin to breathe a little more quickly-see their heart rate speed up", says Brian Barnes, a zoologist of the University of Alaska."As they get up to 10°C to 20°C, you see them shivering(颤抖,抖动) quite clearly , "he
notes, "just as we shiver" .This shivering is a type of way to create heat." Once their body temperatures rise above 30°C" ,he says, "they wake up, clean themselves, and move". A squirrel that looked dead a few hours before is now very much alive.
Arctic ground squirrels are among the world's coolest hibernators. Chilling out (放松)for months at a time lets them grow in this extremely cold place, where food is short. By studying how ground squirrels hiber-nate scientists hope to answer some big questions. Among them : How do these animals go from warm to cold and back again? And might peok ever do the same? The ability to chill out could help humans who suffer from brain injuries and heart problems survive.
24. What's the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Where ground squirrels hibernate. B. What ground squirrels look like.
C. Why ground squirrels hibernate. D. How ground squirrels hibernate.
25. What does the underlined word “exanimate” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Cold. B. Weak. C. Dead. D. Tired.
26. Why does a ground squirrel shiver before coming to life?
A. To increase its body temperature. B. To speed up its heart rate.
C. To restore its breathing. D. To clean its body.
27. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To show the results of the study.
B. To show the purpose of the study.
C. To show how the study was carried out.
D. To show people's interest in ground squirrels.

While researchers have long shown that tall people earn more than the shorter ones. it's not only social discrimination that accounts for this inequality but tall people are just smarter than their height-challenged(身高缺陷的) peers, a new study finds.
"As early as age three-before schooling has had a chance to play a role-and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive (认知的) tests," wrote Anne Case and Christina Paxson of Princeton University in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The findings were based primarily on two British studies that followed children born in 1958
and 1970,respectively, through adulthood and a US study on height and occupational choice.
Other studies have pointed to low self-esteem, better health that accompanies greater height, and social discrimination as culprits(罪犯) for lower pay for shorter people.
But researchers Case and Paxson believe the height advantage in the job world is more than just a question of image.
"As adults, taller individuals are more likely to select into higher paying occupations that require more advanced verbal and numerical skills and greater intelligence, for which they earn handsome returns," they wrote .
For both men and women in the United States and the United Kingdom, a height advantage of four inches equated with a 10 percent increase in wages on average.
But the researchers said the differences in performance crop up long before the tall people enter the job force. Prenatal care (产前护理) and the time between birth and the age of three are critical periods for determining future cognitive ability and height.
"Prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are just incredibly important, even more so than we already knew , "Case said in an interview.
And how tall are the researchers?
They are both about 5 feet 8 inches tall, well above the average height of 5 feet 4 inches for American women.
28. What can be learnt from the study of Anne Case and Christina Paxson?
A. Tall people earn less than shorter ones.
B. Taller children perform significantly better on cognitive test.
C. The only reason for lower pay for shorter people is social discrimination.
D. Prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are less important than we already knew.
29. Which period is the most important for determining future cognitive ability and height?
A. Between age three and schooling. B. Between 1958 and 1970.
C. Between birth and the age of three. D. The whole childhood.
30. What does Case think of the findings?
A. Doubtful. B. Disapproving.
C. Chanllenging. D. Favorable.
31. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Taller People Are Smarter
B. Shorter People Are Looked Down up
C. Tall People Earn More than Shorter Counterparts
D. The Difference Between Tall People and Short People
D

It included both Stanford University and Stanford Medicine emergencyoperation centers(应急指挥中心).The university frequently practices emergency plans, but this drill was different from the earlier ones.

How would it answer the thousands of people who called the university and who were concerned about their loved ones?
"We wanted to create an experience centering mainly on recovery rather than the immediate life safety you would experience right after an earthquake", said Keith Perry, university emergency manager and training and communications manager for Environmental Health and Safety.
The actions of all the people surprised Police Chief Laura Wilson, whose job was to manage many people gathering in the main EOC in the Faculty Club. Peter is an experienced worker of Stanford Medicine EOC. He believes that with each drill carried out, people get better at protecting public safety, repairing the damage to the university and quickly returning the u-niversity to normal teaching and researching activities. "I think everyone learned a lot today. "he said.
32. What do we know about Stanford University?
A. Big earthquakes hit it before.
B. It often holds earthquake drills.
C. It planned to work with Stanford Medicine EOC.
D. About 600 students there survived an earthquake.
33. Why was this drill different from the earlier ones?
A. It put people's life safety first.

A rocket problem that forces astronauts to evacuate(撤退)may appear to be a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie. However, that is exactly what happened to Russian astronaut Alexey Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague. 36
The event happened shortly after the Soyuz rocket and its Soyuz MS-to space capsulec(联盟号太空舱) carrying the astronauts took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. 37
The takeoff went off smoothly, but just 119 seconds later, officials from Russia's space agency informed NASA the booster (助推器) had failed to separate from the capsule. 38 Instead, they were ordered to evacuate by separating the capsule and returning to Earth in what is known as a ballistic descent mode (弹道下降模式). The sharp drop is similar to free-falling from the skies and subjects astronauts to high levels of g-force.
39 They appeared to be in excellent condition when they crash-landed about 20 kilometers east of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, just 34 minutes after they stopped the task. Upon arrival. they were quickly found by the rescue team from Baikonur Cosmodrome and taken to the hospital for a quick check-up to ensure they had not suffered any injuries during their rough ride back to Earth.
It will take a few weeks for experts to determine what caused the problem of the usuallv
reliable Soyuz rocket. 40 Hague, who was on his way to the space station for the first time, later joked happily, "I imagined that my first trip to outer space was going to be a memorable one. I didn't expect it to be that memorable. "
A. Thus, the astronauts didn't head to the International Space Station.

D. And luckily, they became the main characters of the movie about space exploration.
E. Fortunately, the "movie" had a happy ending with both scientists returning to Earth safely.
F. However, the terrible event has not stopped Hague's and Ovchinin's wish to go to space.
