In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons--- for example, economic reasons---why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? ‎ ‎ In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area. It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的)and do not like change. ‎ ‎ Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice. ‎ 24. What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph? A. Some of them are not attractive. ‎ B. Most of them are too expensive to preserve. ‎ C. They are more pleasing than modern buildings. ‎ D. They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area. ‎ 25. Which of the following is true according to the author ? A. We should reproduce the same old buildings. ‎ B. Buildings should not dominate their surroundings. ‎ C. Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in. ‎ D. No one understands why people speak against new buildings. ‎ 26. By “move things forward ” in the last paragraph , the author probably means“_________ ” ‎ A. destroy old buildings ‎ B. put things in a different place ‎ C. choose new architectural styles ‎ A. respect people’s feelings for historical buildings ‎ 24. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To explain why people dislike change. ‎ B. To warn that we could end up living in caves. ‎ C. To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings. ‎ D. To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas. ‎ C ‎ 1. To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human. ‎ 2. Common sense is not all that common. ‎ 3. Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse? ‎ These three popular misquotes(戏谑的引语)are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature .To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do .The original quote about human nature went like this: “To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的).” This saying mirrors an ideal that people should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite –- find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a making of great maturity. ‎ Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine.Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company, “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.” ‎ And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that: if good excuse is “good” even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth? ‎ 25. According to the passage, which of the following seems the most human? A. To search for truth. ‎ B. To achieve one’s ideal ‎ C. To make fun of others’ mistakes. ‎ D. To criticize others for one’s own error. ‎ 26. According to the author, what is a sign of a man’s maturity? A. Doing things his own way. ‎ B. Bearing responsibility for his mistakes. ‎ C. Making as few mistakes as possible. ‎ D. Thinking seriously about his wrongdoing. ‎ 27. What is the author’s opinion about a good excuse? ‎ A. Making a good excuse is sometimes a better policy. ‎ B. Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas. ‎ C. A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty. ‎ D. Bitter truth is better than a good excuse. ‎ 28. What would be the best title for his passage? ‎ A. A Mirror of Human Nature ‎ B. To Blame or to Forgive ‎ C. A Mark of Maturity ‎ D. Truth or Excuse ‎ D ‎ Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumers’ desire to go green . However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns. ‎ Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy. ‎ This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough. ‎ Harry Morrison, chief executive(主管)of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.” ‎ Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions. Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers. ‎ The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted(授予)the standard, they can use a logo in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,” Mr. ‎ Morrison said. ‎ 32. What’s the main idea of the passage? ‎ A. Businesses are finding ways to send their message to the shoppers. ‎ B. Companies will soon get information about cutting carbon emissions. ‎ C. Firms are making efforts to encourage customers to keep goods at home. ‎ D. Firms are urged to cut carbon emissions by shoppers’ environmental awareness. ‎ 33. The underlined word “inform” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________________ ”. A. affect B. change C. disturb D. reject ‎ 34. According to Harry Morrison, businesses______________ . ‎ A. will benefit from cutting carbon emissions ‎ B. should buy carbon allowances for shoppers ‎ C. are required to make up for their carbon emissions ‎ D. have encouraged shoppers to take their custom elsewhere ‎ 35. We can learn from the passage that businesses will ______________ . ‎ A. have a strong desire to reduce costs ‎ B. use the same logo in their marketing ‎ C. gain advantages by taking early action ‎ D. attract more shoppers by storing goods ‎ ‎ ‎ 第二节 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。(满分 10 分) ‎ Empathy ‎ Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __36__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs. ‎ Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person. ‎ B. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said. ‎ C. ‎“One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says. ‎ D. Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic. ‎ E. Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel. ‎ F. It goes directly to the baseball park, so you won't be late. (1) Text 2 ‎ M: Good morning. Do you know why we can't use our parking lot today? ‎ W: Yeah. They're painting lines for new parking spaces for our building. They'd better not make the spots too small. My husband drives a truck, and it still needs to fit! ‎ Text 3 ‎ W: Did I tell you the great news? ‎ M: No. What happened? ‎ W" My boss named me "the employee of the month"! Apparently, I had the highest sales of women's jackets out of any worker in the store. (3) ‎ Text 4 ‎ M: Why do you look so tired today? Were you up studying for the chemistry exam? ‎ W: I did study yesterday, but I went to bed around ten o'clock. Unfortunately, my next-door neighbor had band practice that started as soon as I hit the pillow. (4) M: How rude! ‎ W: I know. I'm so sick of him keeping me up! ‎ Text5 ‎ W: Are you going to the lake with us this weekend? ‎ M: I wish I could get away for a while, but I took on some extra hours at the hospital. (5) I really need the money right now. ‎ Text 6 ‎ M: Hello, may I speak to Mr. Morris? ‎ W: He's out. Can I help you? ‎ M: I hope so. I have a two o'clock appointment scheduled, with him for tomorrow, but unfortunately, I need to cancel. I had a co-worker who was going to cover for me, but he's sick and won't be here. (6) ‎ W: Would you like to reschedule? ‎ M: Yeah, can we do it the same day and time next week? W: Would you like to come in sooner? He's available on Wednesday. ‎ M: No. I can't leave the office on Wednesdays. ‎ W: OK. Then I will reschedule you when you're available. ‎ What's your name, sir? ‎ M: Ben Johnson. ‎ W: All right. Mr. Morris will see you at 2:00 p.m. next Friday. (7) Text 7 ‎ M: Are you OK? ‎ W: Not really. I just failed my chemistry test, and that means I have to go to summer school. (8) M: That's not the end of the world, is it? ‎ W: I'm so upset. I was planning to spend the whole summer in Greece with my best friend. Now we'll have to wait until next year. ‎ M: Well, you'll have an extra year to look forward to the trip. ‎ W: That's not funny. ‎ M: Sorry. Why did you fail-the test, anyway? ‎ W: I can't tell you... ‎ M: Tell me. ‎ W: Well, the night before the final exam, I went to the Justin Bieber concert. (9) I stayed out so late that I was exhausted during the test, and I failed it. ‎ M: Wow! Well, it sounds like going to summer school will be good for you, then. If you want to graduate, you need to start taking more responsibility! (10) ‎ Text.8 ‎ W: Hi, there. I'm looking for a new phone. ‎ M: What kind of phone are you looking for? ‎ W: Well, I need to be able to go on the Internet. ‎ M: OK. We have smart phones, which are better if you use the Internet a lot. But we also have simple phones if you just need the Internet for emergencies. (11) W: Can you show me a few smart phones? ‎ M: Of course. Do you want a touch screen or a keyboard? ‎ W: A keyboard would be better. I type a lot, and it's hard for me to do that on touch screens. (12) M: I'd go with this Blackberry. (12) It's only $99. ‎ W: How is the battery? ‎ M: It's pretty good. But if you need your battery to last for a while, I'd recommend the Droid Maxx. It has the best battery life of all our phones. ‎ W: I like it. It says that it's $199 with a two-year contract. Do you have any better deals than that? ‎ M: Sure. If you buy it before Saturday, you can get $50 cash back. (13) ‎ Text 9 ‎ W: May I help you? ‎ M: Yes. I saw a job posting on Craigslist this morning, and I'm interested in applying. ‎ W: I actually posted two jobs yesterday. (14) Which one are you interested in? ‎ M: Well, I saw the posting for a dog walker. ‎ W: Yes. That is still available. But I also want to hire a gardener. (15) ‎ M: Oh, I didn't see that listing. Can you tell me about that job? (15) ‎ W: Sure. As you can see, I have a very large yard, I need someone to water the plants, pick the vegetables, care for the flowers, and clean up the 1eaves when they fall. Would you be able to do that? ‎ M: Yes, ma'am. I do all of those things now for my mother. She runs a day care center that also has a very large backyard. ‎ W: What about the dog walking? Do you want to hear about that job as well? ‎ M: I'm actually more interested in the one you just described. (15) ‎ W: OK. Well, I will need two letters of reference. (I6) Unfortunately, they can't be from any of your relatives. Can you get those to me by Friday? ‎ M: Friday...as in tomorrow, or next week? (16) ‎ W: Next week. (1.6) ‎ M: Sure. That's no problem at all. (16) ‎ Text 10 ‎ ‎ Well, we finally found a home. It's been two years and five months since my family and I moved out of our old house, and we've been staying in many different places since then. We've actually moved six times, to six different cities! (17) I must admit I really hate all the moving around. The thing I like least is that I have to change schools all the time. (18) I'll be at a school for a few months and start to make friends during that time.
