But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son. Suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends ‎ than to his parents. "The door to his room is always shut," Joanna noted. Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. "She used to cuddle up (蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk," said Mark. "Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which." Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their minds. "In fact, parents are first on the list," said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. "This completely changes during the teen years," Riera explained. "They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last." Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.. 24. "The door to his room is always shut" suggests that the son ____. A. is always busy with his studies        ‎ B. keeps himself away from his parents    ‎ C. doesn't want to be disturbed D. begins to dislike his parents 25. What troubles Tina and Mark most is that_____ .  A. they can't read their daughter's mind exactly B. their daughter isn't as lovely as before   C. they don't know what to say to their daughter       D. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help  26. Which of the following best explains "the wall of silence" in the last paragraph? A. Teenagers talk a lot with their friends.             B. Teenagers do not want to understand their parents. C. Teenagers talk little about their own lives. ‎ D. Teenagers do not talk much with their parents.   ‎ ‎27. What can be learned from the passage? A. Parents are unhappy with their growing children.    B. Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers. C. Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers.  D. Parents should try to understand their teenagers. C A major development to self-driving cars may change the way we will drive in the future. Google, the leading company in self-driving technology, has changed its development plan. It had driverless cars built by car ‎ factories, but now will start building its own car.  Google has started to build some kinds of experimental electric self-driving cars that look like a Smart car. There is no steering wheel(方向盘), gas pedal or brake. The only thing a human passenger controls is a red “e-stop” button for fear stops and a start button. The car’s only “friendly” face is designed to make it help people accept self-driving technology. Google workers took part in a long experiment, in which they used self-driving cars for their usual travel to work. No accident happened, but Google’s leaders realized that depending on a human passenger to drive in an emergency wouldn’t work because they may be reading, working, or sleeping. Now the self-driving car drives by itself if the driver takes his hands off the wheel for over ten seconds. Google’s self-driving cars are now limited to a speed of 25 miles per hour for safety reasons. The cars aren’t allowed to drive on highways. However, a Google engineer said that once the cars are solved to run safely, we can drive at the speed of 50, even 80 miles an hour. Google recently announced that its cars had covered 700,000 miles of public roads, and they were now running in busy city streets. People who love self-driving cars say this will improve transport by making roads safer, cutting down accident, and making less pollution.  28. What is Google’s plan about driverless ‎ cars? A. It will have driverless cars built by car factories. B. It will start building its own driverless cars. C. It will help other companies to make cars. D. It will give up its plan to make driverless cars. ‎ ‎29. The second paragraph mainly talks about______ . A. Smart cars B. a red “e-stop” button C. gas pedal or brake D. Google self-driving cars 30. The writer may agree that ______in the third paragraph. A. Google’s leaders didn’t pay enough attention to safety B. Google didn’t do enough experiment about the car C. it is dangerous for a driver to drive a self-driving car D. Google’s leaders paid enough attention to drivers’ safety 31. We can guess from the last paragraph that______. A. self-driving cars are too expensive B. there will be more self-driving cars C. there will be fewer self-driving cars D. the government will stop Google’s plan D Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books --- especially paperbacks, which are still ‎ comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper and bound(装订)between hard covers. There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts(自夸) of being “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the countless subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet! Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand books, the collector must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small hand-carts. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs, have been waiting for them. In places like this they can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old one that may be worth many pounds. ‎ ‎32. “Londoners are great readers” means that _____. A. Londoners are great because they read a lot.        ‎ B. There are a great number of readers in London C. Londoners are readers who read only great books   ‎ D. Londoners read a lot 33. A. is in the suburbs of London           ‎ B. contains various kinds of shops   ‎ C. is famous for its bookshops     ‎ D. is the busiest street in London 34. A. move away from a busy street B. buy books in a most busy street  ‎ C. waste time looking for books          ‎ D. take a risk of losing one’s life 35. On Farringdon Road, ______. A. you can find fine bookshops for the latest books                  B. you can see book sellers selling books on hand-carts C. there are only small bookshops for the second-hand books D. the same books as the ones in the bookshops of Charring Cross Road are sold 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Determination is the quality you show when you’ve decided to do something and you won’t let anything stop you. 36._______One is uphill determination, which means you work hard to finish a difficult task although there are many difficulties. Can you see them?” Mr. Jones answered, “Yes, I can.” He drove the car slowly near the woman and said to her, “Can we help you?” “No, thank you,” replied the woman, but she did not stop running, “My husband and I always run home after going to the movies and the latter one back has to wash the dishes at home.” ‎
