Yet, I was determined to go ahead. ‎ I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic". ‎ The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! ‎ The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. ‎ Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! ‎ At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!" ‎ By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. ‎ By mile 21, I was starving! ‎ As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running. ‎ I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. ‎ Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner". ‎ 4. One is never too old to learn. ‎ C ‎ C ‎ As an oceanographer (海洋学家), I’ve spent many years developing robots to explore the ocean, and now we’re putting that technology to use in our JASON Project, a program that’s designed to inspire students and get them interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In theaters throughout the country, we bring kids together and send back to them on large screens our live explorations of large areas of the globe. Not only are the kids observers, but they can operate robots moving across the area while broadcasting images back to them. The kids have the sensation (感受) of really being at the site with us. ‎ I believe advances in robot technology will one day be the key to a new kind of travel. In the next 10 or 15 years, people will have rooms in their houses that will be able to simulate (模拟) other environment. I like to call these rooms “home domes” — small theaters with screens and advanced equipment that can reproduce the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of a desert or a forest. Hand in hand with these rooms, I can see a market for travel robots located in countries around the world. You could rent (租) a robot working in a rain forest, then go into your home dome, where you yourself operate the robot’s movements. The equipment in the room will receive the sensations in the robot’s environment and simulate them for you. ‎ Today, much of the world’s population never travels more than 50 or 60 miles from home. And even a person with enough time can see only a part of the earth’s sights. But this new way of travel will cost so much less in both time and money and allow people to see a lot more of the globe. And simulated travel will also help protect our planet. You can’t take large groups of tourists to look at Dian Fossey’s gorillas (大猩猩). But a small robot, with no animal smell, can get very close to a gorilla and send the sights, sounds, and smells back to a million people. ‎ 6. The main purpose of the JASON Project is to . ‎ A. design robots B. educate children C. explore the world D. improve technology ‎ 7. Without going outside, people in “home domes” can . ‎ A. enjoy a guided trip B. get very close to nature C. develop and operate robots D. send images back to scientists ‎ 4. What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of robot technology? ‎ A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. ‎ ‎ C. Hopeful. D. Dissatisfied. ‎ 5. According to the text, simulated travel . ‎ A. has been widely accepted ‎ B. costs lots of time and money ‎ C. is harmful to the environment ‎ D. is time and money-saving ‎ D ‎ Illegally traded endangered species that escape, forming secondary populations, offer hope to their long-term survival, a study suggests. "This first came to my attention when I read a news story about the seizure of an illegal shipment of 23 yellow-crested cockatoos," said Luke Gibson, a college teacher. He learned that the species was critically endangered, which surprised him. ‎ ‎ This encouraged Dr. Gibson and his colleague to investigate(调查) how a critically endangered species had become self-sustaining outside of its natural range. They discovered 49 cases of a globally threatened species becoming established as a separate population, including the yellow-crested cockatoo in their city. ‎ ‎ "This is a species which is primarily threatened by wildlife trade," he told BBC News. "Poachers(偷猎者) go out into the forest in its native range in eastern Indonesia and capture the birds and then ship them off, usually up to our city where there is a strong demand for pet birds. This is what has fueled the decline of this species in its native range. But it’s really interesting because that same cause also had another effect: some of the people who were keeping this species here accidentally or intentionally released them." As a result of enough of the birds being set free, it allowed a new self-sustaining population to be established in this city. ‎ ‎ The government of Dr. Gibson’s city has made it illegal to capture the species, even though it is a non-native species. Because the city is affluent and relatively well educated, the cases of people breaking the law are extremely rare, explained Dr. Gibson. Unlike in its native range in Indonesia where capturing birds forms a major source of income. ‎ ‎ However, there can be downsides(缺点) to the newly established population of endangered species, such as a limited genetic pool, and suffering from novel diseases. It did also present a possible "very interesting" opportunity for conservationists, Dr. Gibson suggested. This would involve "harvesting" some of the newly established secondary population, which may provide a way to help slow global biodiversity loss. ‎ 12. What was beyond Gibson’s expectations according to the first paragraph? ‎ A. The high rate of wildlife trade. B. The preciousness of the birds. ‎ ‎ C. The fact that the birds nearly disappear. D. The news that the birds were poached. ‎ 13. What happened unexpectedly when the birds were shipped abroad? ‎ A. They formed a separate population. B. They were kept as pet birds. ‎ ‎ C. They were traded illegally. D. They were killed for research. ‎ 12. Which can replace the underlined word "affluent"? ‎ A. Peace-loving. B. Rich. ‎ ‎ C. Free. D. Environment-friendly. ‎ 13. For what purpose did the author write the passage? ‎ A. To appeal to everyone to stop the wildlife trade. ‎ B. To explain the challenge the wild birds are facing. ‎ C. To introduce a creative approach to wildlife conservation. ‎ D. To raise people’s awareness of protecting endangered species. ‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ Tolerance means tolerating or putting up with differences. 16 This concept means different things to different people, but it is when something is disagreeable that tolerance is expected, and in more politically correct cultures, demanded. ‎ ‎ 17 A person might fully disagree with others on any issue, while at the same time respecting those with different opinions and treating them with dignity. Disagreement alone does not equal intolerance. ‎ One problem is the fact that this respect is sometimes one-sided. Those who disagree with a particular issue must respect the opinions of those who support it, but some supporters feel reasonable in labeling those who disagree ‎ with hateful terms, and vice versa. 18 ‎ When it comes to controversial issues, tolerance may also represent a "let’s agree to disagree" attitude. It does not mean that a person has to accept actions or ideas that are against his or her values or beliefs. 19 When both parties have expressed their opinions, and it is obvious that neither is likely to change position, agreeing to disagree is often the ideal outcome. ‎ Some degree of tolerance is necessary in any civilized society. 20 It goes against human nature. Putting up with differences is a virtue that requires honest effort on the part of every person. It takes time to develop. A. There are many different ways to show tolerance. ‎ B. Therefore, both parties should change opinions if necessary. ‎ C. People on both sides of an issue must be tolerant of each other. ‎ D. It means showing respect for the race, religion and opinions of other people. ‎ E. It is widely accepted that tolerance is a critical step towards a peaceful world. ‎ F. But it is not realistic to believe that all people can achieve it completely on every issue. ‎ G. It means that each person agrees to respect the other’s right to his or her feelings on the matter ‎ 第二部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分 45 分) ‎ 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 ‎ My 9-year-old daughter and I were flying from our home in Carolina to spend a week with my husband in ‎ Florida.
