It’s a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t have an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine.”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine.” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello!” or “Hi!”‎ Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks, “Do you agree?”, the other person might be thinking, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong…” But it isn’t very polite to disagree strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure...” It’s a nice way to say that you don’t agree with someone.‎ People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I’ve to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse, “Someone is at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or it might not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.‎ When they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people often don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s also a part of the game of language.‎ ‎24. When a person in the United States asks “How are you?”, he or she wants to hear “______”.‎ A. How are you? B. Hello!‎ C. I don’t know. D. Fine.‎ ‎25. When a person wants to disagree with someone, it is polite to say “______”.‎ A. You’re wrong. I disagree.‎ B. I'm not sure.‎ C. I’m sure I disagree.‎ D. No, I disagree.‎ ‎26. When a person says “I’ve to go now. Someone is at the door.”, he or she may be _________.‎ A. giving an excuse B. hurting someone’s feeling C. talking to a person at the door D. going to another place ‎27. One of the rules of the game of language is probably “________”.‎ A. Always say what you mean.‎ B. Don’t disagree with people.‎ C. Never say exactly what you’re thinking.‎ D. Being polite is the best policy.‎ C A student was one day taking a walk with his teacher. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer’s, who was working in the nearby field.‎ The student turned to the teacher, saying, “We will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do.”‎ ‎“My young friend,” answered the teacher, “we should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch?” The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the ‎ field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.‎ After putting on his coat, he put his foot into one of his shoes, and felt something hard. Then he bent(弯腰)down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Surprised, he looked at the coin, turned it around and looked at it again. He then looked around, but no person was seen. He put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe. His surprise was doubled on finding the other coin.‎ He couldn’t control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. He said the help would save them from dying.‎ The student stood there deeply moved, his eyes filled with tears. “Now,” said the teacher, “aren’t you much happier than if you had hidden the shoes?”‎ ‎28. When the student saw the shoes, he wanted to ________.‎ A. steal them B. find their owner C. play a joke on the owner D. give the owner some money ‎29. When the farmer saw the second coin, he ________.‎ A. was very excited and grateful B. was worried and looked up at the sky C. was surprised and decided to find the owner D. spoke of his difficulties and asked for more help ‎30. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. It is never too late to learn.‎ B. All good things come to an end.‎ C. Where there is a will, there is a way.‎ D. True happiness comes from helping others.‎ D Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.‎ Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.‎ Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.‎ Some kids cheat because they're busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.‎ If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn't study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school. A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will make you feel better than cheating.‎ ‎32. The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, ______.‎ A. it is unfair to other people B. it does harm to their health C. teachers should punish them D. teachers shouldn't stop them at once ‎33. Some students like cheating mainly because ______.‎ A. the material in the test is very difficult B. they want to do better than the others C. cheating can make hard things seem very easy D. they have little time to study their lessons ‎34. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ______.‎ A. cheating isn't a good idea B. why kids cheat in the test C. some kids can't pass the test without cheating D. some kids don't spend the time studying ‎35. In the passage those cheaters are advised to ______.‎ A. spend more time on school than on sports B. find good solutions instead of cheating C. try hard to be intelligent rather than lazy D. ask their classmates for good methods of study 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ Whales are interesting animals. 36 They have bodies that are made for swimming. Whales have a lot of body fat that helps them keep warm. It also makes their bodies smooth.‎ These animals move well through the water. But they are not fish. A fish’s tail grows up and down. 37 Whales don’t lay eggs like fish. A baby whale grows inside the mother’s body before it is born.
