A
My husband and I had just opened up a pet sitting business earlier that year. Our customers had slowly risen from three to thirty a month. We were busy through those hot summer months, driving between visits. Our services were strictly held at the pet owner’s home. It was almost too busy for the two of us, but we were making good money!
We asked pet owners new to our services to phone two weeks ahead so we had enough time to meet the owners and pets at their homes and make any following meetings before the owner leaves.
One day, we decided to take on a new customer just two days before they would leave. We met the family, filled in a form, and spent some time with their dog, Hercules. He playfully jumped
on us and touched our hands and arms using his tongue. The family laughed as he did this, showing us that he was very loving.
Two days later I appeared at the house, alone. I came up to Hercules and said hello happily. I filled up his water bowl and cleaned any messes he made. Meanwhile, he was so lovely sitting beside. I thought this would be the good picture to send to the owners, a usual service. After the light and “click” sound went off, Hercules rushed at me. I didn’t know what had just happened until I noticed the drops of blood. I ran out and did the only thing—calling my husband.
Then I went to neighbors for help. My husband arrived after ten minutes. The helpful neighbor and my husband led Hercules back into his pen (圈). Then my husband and I took off to the hospital.
I must have looked like I was shot when I walked into the hospital. The nurses quickly moved me to a room. I asked the doctor in a weak but playful manner, “Am I going to die?” He replied, “Finally.”

Recently, many e-commerce platforms, including Didi Taxi, Ctrip, Fliggy, JD and Taobao, have been uncovered that they are cheating their frequent customers. Their ways are pretty clever. When there are new users or conservative old users, they will give a quite appealing price to attract them into registering and buying goods. However, their big data is not that friendly to the stable users and frequent visitors. The system always offers them higher price for the same products or service. How does this happen? According to the data analysis, the system knows clearly that although they feel the price is high, they will finally pay the bill. By collecting and analyzing users’ profiles, buying habits and other information, big data recommends the same products to different users with different prices.
Companies also try other ways to make money, making online consumption far more worrying. For example, video websites always offer 120 seconds’ advertisements, which drives people crazy. And even if you pay for the membership to get rid of the ads, you have to “enjoy” 15-second “private” ads. By broadcasting them, companies make huge profits ---second to the membership fees. Also, owning 100Mbps network, you still put up with the slow speed when you are downloading a song. You have no choice but to become a VIP when you seek high quality services. Users seem to be lambs(羊羔) among wolves. Even though they say “Since you have money, I’ll charge you more”, we can’t do anything about it.
It pains us that we haven’t figured out a way to deal with the problem. The only thing we can do is replacing our iPhones with Android phones if we want to buy a membership card, and applying for new accounts if we want cheaper hotels. Not finding a way to fight back, we can’t do anything but accept them passively.
29. How does big data serve companies according to the text?
A. By being kind to all users.
B. By giving a discount to stable users.
C. By attracting new users by analyzing their shopping habits.
D. By recommending the same products with higher prices to regular users.
30. What do we know from the second paragraph?
A. Membership can rid you of all the ads.
B. Only by being a VIP can you get a better service.
C. The slow download speed is due to your poor network.
D. Advertising income is the biggest income for video websites.
31. What is the author’ attitude towards the chances of finding a way to fight back?
A. Uncertain. B. Casual. C. Negative. D. Positive.
32. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The big data provides helpful information to users.
B. We have to accept online consumption as it is.
C. There exist many online consumption traps.
D. Regular customers are richer.
D
Sustainable (可持续的) management is seen as a practical and economical way of protecting species from extinction. Instead of depending on largely ineffective laws against poaching (偷猎), it gives local people a good economic reason to protect plants and animals. In Zimbabwe, for instance, there is a sustainable management project to protect elephants. Foreign tourists pay large sums of money to kill these animals for sports. This money is then given to the inhabitants of the area where the hunting takes place. In theory, locals will be encouraged to protect elephants, instead of poaching them because of the economic benefit involved.
This sounds like a sensible way, but it remains to be seen whether it will work. With corruption (腐败) in these developing countries, some observers are doubtful that the money will actually reach the people it is intended for. Others wonder how effective the locals will be at stopping poachers.
There are also questions about whether sustainable management is practical when it comes to protecting forests. In theory, the formula should be the same as with elephants —allow logging companies to cut down some number of trees, but not so many as to completely destroy the forest.
Sustainable management of forests requires controls on the number of trees which are cut down, as well as investment (投资) in replacing them. Because almost all tropical forests are located in countries which very much need income from logging, there are few rules and motivation to do this.
One solution might be to certify (认证) wood which comes from sustainably managed forests. In theory, consumers would buy only this wood and so force logging companies to “go green” or go out of business. Unfortunately, unlimited logging is so much more profitable that wood prices from managed forests would cost up to five times more—an increase that consumers, no matter how “green”, are unlikely to pay.
33. The example of Zimbabwe mentioned in the first paragraph is to .
A. prove that sustainable management is ineffective
B. explain what sustainable management is
C. show that tourism there is developing well
D. indicate that people there are good at making money with elephants
34. The phrase “go green” in the last paragraph probably means .
A. a company begins to make money instead of being in red
B. making the forests always green in colour
C. operating in ways which do not damage the environment
D. starting from the very beginning
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What environmental protection mainly include.
B. Whether sustainable management in environmental protection is practical.
C. Different people’s attitudes towards sustainable management.
D. How people can protect animals and plants.

Dear Kanye,
On hearing the news that a terrible wildfire broke out in your hometown, I am extremely concerned about you.
So shocked, I wonder how much damage the wildfire has caused. With your house burnt to the ground, have you got used to staying in the present shelter? Can you put up with the inconvenience there? However tough the situation is, don’t lose heart! A man can be defeated, but cannot be destroyed! Sad as you are, you must cheer up to rebuild your home. I firmly believe that your hometown will soon come back to life.
In the face of such a disaster, it was your calmness and determination that got you through difficulties, which moved us to tears. Again, on behalf of my schoolmates, let me express our deepest concern for your family. Anyway, tomorrow is another day.
Best wishes.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
