Lying beside Lake Erie, it saw him in at sunrise and out at nightfall. Sometimes my mother would take my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and me to the public beach ‎ in our hometown of Ashtabula. She’d gather us round and point to the smokestacks, coughing clouds into the sky.‎ ‎“Wave to daddy!” she’d shout. Four little hands would shoot into the air. I never knew what Dad did in Plant C, but during 34 years of hard work, he had surgery (手术) on his shoulder and hand. At 48, he had his first heart attack. He retired in 1993, right after the last kid graduated from college. But the damage was done. A few years later, the next heart attack killed him.‎ I saw my dad in plant C only once, when I took dinner to him. That night, I looked at my father, covered in sweat and coal, and for the first time I knew why he was so often angry for no reason.‎ Recently my father’s friend, Toby Workman, walked me there. I knew my father never wanted me to see it. At every station, he described the job and the danger. It was like listening to a foreign language. I walked past many DANGER signs. Toby put his hand on my shoulder. “Look”, he said, “you need to understand something. Your dad was a maintenance mechanic. He worked the most dangerous job. If something broke, he fixed it.”‎ A few days later, my daughter graduated from college. I gave her the hard hat Toby handed to me as I left, and this note: “Whenever you feel something difficult, put this on, look in the mirror, and remember your roots.”‎ ‎24. How many siblings does the author most probably have?‎ A. Three siblings B. Two siblings C. Five siblings D. Four siblings ‎25. Which of the following is true about the author’s father?‎ A. He didn’t suffer a heart attack until he retired.‎ B. He worked in Plant C for 48 years in all.‎ C. He was hardly angry in his daily life.‎ D. He did physical work in Plant C.‎ ‎26. The author gave her daughter the hat to hope that her daughter could ______.‎ A. remember her grandfather B. overcome all difficulties ‎ C. get encouraged by her grandfather D. follow her grandfather’s work C Crown shyness(树冠羞避)is a mysterious natural phenomenon in which the crowns of some tree species do not touch each other, but get separated by a gap clearly ‎ visible from ground level. The effect usually occurs between trees of the same species, but has also been observed between trees of different species.‎ There are many theories going around, most of which make sense, but no one has been able to prove without the shadow of a doubt why some trees avoid touching each other.‎ In his 1955 book, Growth Habits of the Eucalypts,Australian forester M. R. Jacobs writes that the growing tips of the trees are sensitive to abrasion (擦伤),which results in crown shyness phenomenon. This theory was also supported by Dr Miguel Franco. Some experiments have shown that if trees displaying crown shyness are artificially prevented from swaying(摇摆) in the wind and touching each other, they gradually fill up the gaps between them.‎ But while the above theory is arguably the most widespread, it’s certainly not the only one. Some scientists have suggested that crown shyness is a mechanism to stop the spreading of leaf-eating insects. These pests have been known to work together and create structures that extend up to 10 cm off of tree branches, in order to reach other plants, so the gaps are the trees natural defense method.‎ One Malaysian scholar studied many trees, but found no traces of abrasions, despite their clear crown shyness. Instead, he suggests that the growing tips of the trees were sensitive to light levels and stopped growing when they got too close to other trees. Plants are able to sense how close they are to other plants and in order to get more light, they give off some chemical to stop other trees from growing too close.‎ Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure, plants are more intelligent than people.‎ ‎27. What can we know about crown shyness?‎ A. It can cause abrasion between trees.‎ B. It only happens between the same species.‎ C. It has been discovered for only half a century.‎ D. No agreement has been reached about its real cause.‎ ‎28. What will happen if trees showing crown shyness are stopped from swaying?‎ A. The gaps between the trees will grow wider.‎ B. The trees will stop growing and even die.‎ C. The gaps between the trees will remain the same.‎ D. The crown shyness phenomenon will disappear.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word “mechanism” in paragraph 4 probably mean?‎ A. Tip B. Theory C. Way D. Plan ‎30. Which statement might the Malaysian scholar agree with?‎ A. Some insects stop trees growing too close.‎ B. Trees have special ways to attack others.‎ C. Trees won’t touch each other to avoid diseases.‎ D. Trees compete with their neighbors for light.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Ways to Respectfully Disagree It’s easier to agree than disagree. 36 Unfortunately, many of us either shy away completely from disagreements or lose it when things don’t go our way. These tips can help keep disagreements constructive.‎ Use “I’ to communicate how you feel, what you think and what you want or need. 37 For example, telling your parents “You always remind me about my housework when you know I have much homework” has a very different tone from “I’m feeling pressured because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?”‎ Listen to the other’s opinion. 38 That makes it more likely that he or she will do the same for you. When the other person is talking, try to stop yourself from thinking about why you disagree or what you’ll say next.‎ ‎ 39 This is the important thing you can do to keep a conversation on track. Of course, it’s a huge challenge to stay calm when you feel angry about something, especially if the person you’re talking to gets heated.‎ ‎ 40 If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of someone’s put-downs (贬损的话), you know how valuable using respectful language and behavior can be. So instead of saying what you might be thinking (That’s a stupid idea!), try saying “I don’t agree, and here is why.”‎ Respect goes beyond difficult conversations, of course. Being helpful and considerate towards family members, teachers or coaches in our everyday actions helps us establish a foundation for those times when we might disagree.‎ A. Stay calm.‎ B. Look into the other’s eyes.‎ C. Using ‘you’ statements can sound aggressive.‎ D. Avoid putting down the other person’s ideas and beliefs.‎ E. Then you can calmly present your case and why you disagree.‎ F. Being a good listener shows that you respect the other person.‎ G. But we can learn a lot from conversations where we don’t agree.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题:每小题1.5分,满分30分) ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ Did you ever have one of those dreams that seemed to go on forever?
