The Indians in a small village in South Dakota asked their new leader if the coming winter was going to be cold.‎ Since he was a leader in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the winter was going to be like. However, to be on the safe side, he told the villagers that the winter was going to be cold. He also said they should collect firewood to be prepared.‎ But, being a responsible leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone booth (电话亭), called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold?”‎ ‎“It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,” the man at the weather service replied. So the leader went back and told the villagers to prepare more firewood.‎ A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. “Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?” “Yes,” the man at the National Weather Service again replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.”‎ Two weeks later, the leader called the National Weather Service again. “Are you quite sure that the winter is going to be very cold?”‎ ‎“Quite sure,” the man replied. “It’s looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we’ve ever seen.”‎ ‎“How can you be so sure?” the leader asked. ‎ The weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting a lot of firewood.”‎ ‎21. To tell them the weather for the coming winter.‎ B. To thank them for telling him the weather.‎ C. To ask them for advice on collecting firewood.‎ D. To know the exact details of the weather for the coming winter.‎ ‎23. What might be the best title for the text?‎ A. A Cold Winter ‎ B. The Old Secrets C. A Clever New Leader ‎ D. The National Weather Service B The whales we know today are large, fish-like animals that only live in the sea. But the ancestors of these underwater animals had legs to carry them on land. Now, scientists working in South America have found fossils (化石) of a four-legged whale. The scientists believe it lived about 43 million years ago.‎ Current Biology reported the findings. They wrote that a team found the fossils eight years ago in a desert area of southern Peru. Scientists have been studying them. ‎ The four-legged whale is called Peregocetus pacificus. It means “the travelling whale that reached the Pacific Ocean” in Latin. It was an ancestor of whales that were amphibious (两栖的) — they had the ability to live both on land and in water.‎ The fossils show that the first such animals appeared about 50 million years ago. They lived in some areas making up India and Pakistan at present. The animals were about four meters long. They were able to carry their own weight and could walk on land.‎ Scientists believe the Peregocetus spent most of its time in the water, but might have climbed onto the rocky coast to rest or give birth. The fossils show that the animal’s hands and feet had small hooves (蹄) and their toes were connected to help with swimming.‎ Olivier Lambert is a scientist at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. He says the fossils provide important information about how these early whales developed and travelled. Finding it in Peru shows the whales spread from South Asia to North Africa, then crossed the South Atlantic to reach the Americas.‎ The scientists say the newly-found fossils show clearly that the whale also had good swimming skills. And the whale moved in similar ways to modern amphibious animals.‎ ‎24. Where did four-legged whales probably live?‎ ‎①In India. ②In Pakistan. ③In Brussels. ④In Peru.‎ A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④‎ ‎25. What do we know about the Peregocetus?‎ A. It could live both in water and on land.‎ B. It finally moved to North Africa and died out there.‎ C. It first appeared about 40 million years ago.‎ D. Its hands and feet could help it hunt for food.‎ ‎26. What is the value of the newly-found fossils?‎ A. They show why whales needed to live on land.‎ B. They show how whales developed swimming skills.‎ C. They show when amphibious animals came into being.‎ D. They show early whales’ development and travelling.‎ C Students at Beijing’s Yucai High School have to be very careful when playing football on the school’s field. That’s because there is a 100-year-old tree growing in the middle of it. And keeping their eye on the ball too much can result in a painful collision (撞击).‎ Building a football field around a tree sounds pretty stupid. But the school had no choice. It’s reported that there are historic (有历史意义的) buildings all around Yucai High School, and this was the only space that could be used for a football field. Before starting working on the field, the school did ask to have the tree moved and planted somewhere else. However, they were told that it was hundreds of years old, and that it was a national treasure. Having it moved and planted somewhere else was too risky (有风险的) — they might damage or kill the tree. So they were left with no choice but to build the field around it. ‎ Interestingly, Yucai High School is built on the grounds of Beijing’s Royal Gardens of the Ming and Qing dynasties. A reporter for the Beijing News believes that the strangely-located tree is the oldest tree in the Chinese capital. That information has not been checked, but other people think the tree is only 100 years old. ‎ Playing a serious game of football on this field cannot be very pleasant. The tree could “catch” the ball and change its direction from time to time. But the students have no choice but to train on the playground with the tree. Luckily, they can play on a different field in competitions with other schools. ‎ ‎27. If students play football on the school field, ____________.‎ A. they might run into a tree B. they will have a good chance of winning C. they will fall down more often D. they can control the ball all the time ‎28. Why did the school build a football field around a tree?‎ A. Because the tree was as old as the school.‎ B. Because the school could only use that place.‎ C. Because students in the school liked the tree.‎ D. Because the tree had something to do with the city’s history.‎ ‎29. Why was the school not allowed to move and plant the tree somewhere else?‎ A. Because there was no other place for the tree.‎ B. Because it may have been dangerous for the tree and it might have died.‎ C. Because the tree was too big to be moved.‎ D. Because it was more meaningful to keep the tree where it was.‎ ‎30. What do we know about the tree?‎ A. It’s the oldest tree in the Chinese capital.‎ B. It was planted in Ming Dynasty.‎ C. Some believe it is only one-hundred years old.‎ D. Students will play on another field to protect it.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ If you’re afraid of public speaking, you’re not alone.
