After two years of careful consideration, Robert McCrum has reached a conclusion on his selection of the 100 greatest novels written in English. Take a look at a few in his list:
The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (1678)
A story of a man in search of truth told with the simple clarity and beauty of Bunyan’s prose makes this an English classic.
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (1719)
By the end of the 19th century, no book in English literary history had enjoyed more editions and translations. This world-famous novel is a complex literature that one cannot resist.
Gulliver’s Travel by Jonathan Swift (1726)
A great work that’s been repeatedly printed, Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels
comes third in our list of the best novels written in English.
Clarissa by Samuel Richardson (1748)
Clarissa is a tragic heroine, pressured by her dishonorable family to marry a wealthy man she dislikes, in the book that Samuel Johnson described as “the first book in the world that shows the knowledge about the human heart”.
Tom Jones by Henry Fielding (1749)
Tom Jones is a classic English novel that gets the spirit of its age and whose characters are well-know since they have come to represent the society at that time.
Emma by Jane Austen (1816)
Jane Austen’s Emma is her most outstanding work, mixing the best parts of her early books with a deep sense of feelings.
The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe (1838)
Edgar Allan Poe’s only novel—a classic adventure story with supernatural elements—has fascinated and influenced generations of writers.
1. Which English book has got the most translations before the 20th century?
A. Robinson Crusoe. B. Gulliver’s Travels. C. Tom Jones. D.Emma.
2. What does Samuel Johnson think we can learn from the book Clarissa?
A. A love story. B. Quarrels in a family.
C. The human heart. D.The spirit of the time.
3. What makes the characters in Tom Jones famous?
A. Their classic lifestyles. B.Their different nationalities.
B. Their typical spirits of the age. D.Their representation of the society.

If you followed the 2016 Olympic Games, you may have noticed that several athletes, including U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps had circular bruises on their bodies. These bruises were the result of “cupping therapy”(拔火罐), a traditional Chinese medicinal practice that has been for more than 2,000 years.
Many athletes say that they have benefited from the therapy. Phelps used the
therapy in the fall of 2014 and has used it about twice a week since, reported ABC news. Another U.S. swimmer, Dana Vollmer, also believes that “it really helps with blood flow”.
However, some have said that the supposed health effects result from people’s feeling that the treatment works, rather than any physical effect of the treatment.
To figure out cupping therapy has any physical effects, last year researchers from Germany carried out a test in which a false treatment was provided.
In the study, the same type of cups was used in the real treatment and the false treatment. But in the false treatment, the cups had a hole at the top so that they couldn’t create the proper suction(吸力).
The tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that cause a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either a traditional cupping or “soft cupping”. But they were not informed that the so-called “soft-cupping” was a false treatment.
It turned out that most patients correctly guessed which kind of cupping they had received. In both groups, patients experienced about the same reductions in pain. “The results suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself.” the researchers told the Live Science website.
The question of whether cupping therapy works still needs to be answered. But because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people. “The therapy can be used as a part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and lifestyle changing,” Dr. Brent Bauer, director of the U.S. Mayo Clinic Complementary and Program, told Live Science.
1. Why is Michael Phelps mentioned in the passage?
A. To give athletes a new way to swim faster.
B. To provide athletes a new way of treatment.
C. To introduce the topic on cupping therapy.
D. To show swimmers suffer from disorders.
2. The purpose of the test by researchers from Germany was to_____ .
A. promote the health effects of cupping therapy
B. see whether cupping therapy has a physical effect
A. compare traditional cupping with the soft supping
B. compare cupping therapy’s effects on different groups of people.
1. What can be learned about the test?
A. Different people need different types of cupping therapy.
B. The real treatment and false treatment almost have the same effect.
C. The results show that cupping therapy is not part of the treatment.
D. Cupping therapy is only effective when used with lifestyle changing.
2. According to Dr. Brent Bauer, cupping therapy_____ .
A. is a fast and easy treatment for people to carry out
B. is a newly invented way to cure some diseases
C. needs a long period of time to take effect
D. can be used together with other treatments

The times are changing. On Thursday October 13th, singer-songwriter Boy Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making the first time the highly-eyed-on literary award has gone to someone who is mainly seen as a musician, and giving rise to heated discussions.
The 75-year-old won the prize “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, the Swedish Academy said.
“For 54 years he has been at it, reinventing himself,” said Sara Danius, the academy’s permanent secretary. “Bob Dylan writes poetry for the ear. But it’s perfectly fine to read his works ad poetry.”
And while many Dylan’s fans have found great delight at the news, others online and in the literary community are cross with the Committee, saying the award has skipped over fiction writers for the second year.
New York Times Book Review editor Pamela Paul said it was good news but pointed out how many “deserving” novelists there are.
Director Martin Scorsese put out a statement saying he was “overjoyed” that Dylan
was awarded the prize.
“Dylan’s poetry, his musical genius, has meant so much to me personally and to generations of people around the world,” Scorsese said. “His work has influenced and shaped culture, and he has never stopped exploring and growing as an artist. The Nobel Committee has given Dylan a form of recognition that fits his role in our culture—in world culture”.
Dylan won a Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for his “great influence on popular music and American culture”. He’s the first American to win the literary Nobel since Toni Morrison in 1993.
1. Why does Bob Dylan’s winning the Nobel Prize cause heated discussions?
A. He created poetic expressions. B. He is known as a musician.
B. He reinvents himself. D. He is 75 years old.
2. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined part in Paragraph 4?
A. are thankful to B. are satisfied with C.are angry with D.are worried about
3. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A brief introduction to Bob Dylan.
B. The reason for Bob Dylan’s success.
C. Bob Dylan’s influence on American culture.
D. Different views on Bob Dylan’s winning the Nobel Prize.

Choosing the Right Path to Be a “Better” Person
Life is a constant exercise in self-improvement. In the rush to achieve, the idea of being “better” can become lost sometimes. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. 31
Explore your talents.
Everybody has some outstanding skills or interests. So it’s often necessary to be patient and try many things before you find one that suits you.
32 For example, people loving adventure may not be interested in the quiet chess club, but someone who enjoys quiet activities might be. Determining who you enjoy being around may help you know what you’ll enjoy.
33
No matter how much money you make, you will not be happy if you spend your entire life doing something you hate. It’s important to at least devote some of your time to what makes you happy.
If you’re particular unhappy at your job, consider why. 34 If you feel your job isn’t meaningful, or isn’t in line with your values, consider finding another job.
Experience something new.
Research has shown that when we’re in our comfort zone, we aren’t as productive as we are when we step just beyond it. 35 Because of that, we may react slowly to our own positive experiences. It’s important to have new experiences and interactions with others, even when those are a little scary. Doing so can help you achieve more.
A. Do what you love.
B. Here are some tips for you.
C. Register in a class you’re interested in.
D. Human adapt very quickly to positive events.
E. It’s possible that some changes may change your feeling.
F. Similar types of people may be attracted to the same activities.
G. Try not to allow yourself to focus so much on a certain aspect of your life.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied(欺负)by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no
brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversations. And don't forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.

Nowadays, shyness is getting increasingly common and certain reasons may account for it. Scientists argue that genes and family size may contribute to one’s shyness. Moreover, birth places are also among one of the reasons. Nevertheless, they think shyness is a common phenomenon and it can be gotten rid of by attempting something new and starting talking with others.(62 words)
