Glen Nevis is known as the “outdoor capital” of Scotland. Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, rises above the area, while the waters of the River Nevis flow through the rocky valley below. The wonderful scenery attracts walkers and climbers all through the seasons, though it's cold in winter.
During the summer months, one of the most exciting activities is the yearly Glen Nevis River Race, in which competitors race for three kilometres along the river, but not in a boat. Instead, each competitor uses a lilo, a plastic bed filled with air normally used for camping or floating in the sea, to race along the river. There are rocks, waterfalls and sections with scary names like Dead Dog Pool and the Leg Breaker for them to get through.
Competitors set off at 30 second intervals (间隔) by jumping with their lilos from a tiny shelf on a rock into the fast-flowing water 12 metres below. It can take anything from 20 minutes to over two hours to complete the course, depending on the level of the river and the abilities of the competitor.
The only rules are that competitors must be at least 16 years old, and should provide their own crash helmet (防撞头盔), a rubber wet suit and a life jacket. Gloves and old trainers are suggested to protect against knocks. The most important qualification (资格), however, is a sense of fun.
The race is full of exciting moments, and the greatest of these is at the Lower Falls Leap, where terrified competitors have to jump over a ten-metre waterfall not far from the finish. More than 3,000 athletes have taken part in the race during its 30-year history. Their £30 entry fee helps to raise money for the mountain rescue team, whose members provide an essential service in the region for free.
The prizes may not be fantastic, but everyone receives a certificate (证书) of
completion and the winner gets the title River Race Champion and all who take part agree that it is worth it for the satisfying feeling of reaching the end safely.

In his book The Tipping Point Canadian author Malcolm Gladwell explains how a trend (潮流) can take many forms. It can be a general change in social behaviour, an idea or a fashion. However, why do some trends catch on and others not? What makes one particular brand of training shoe suddenly become the must-have product? How do people find out about trends and what makes people want to buy into them? Is it simply a question of keeping up with other people?
In his new work, Gladwell explores the moment when something becomes common and how products, ideas, messages and forms of behaviour spread. He looks at the reasons why trends
are similar in the way they develop to outbreaks of disease, or medical epidemics (流行病).
Epidemics, like trends, start in a very small way, maybe from a single person with a virus, then spread very quickly until they take over the population and appear to be everywhere. Eventually, they will slow down gradually or die out suddenly. Gladwell shows how these changes happen not gradually but at one sudden moment.
Gladwell identifies three types of people who are influential in the development of these kinds of social epidemics:
Connectors are people in a community who have wide social circles. They know a lot of people and like to introduce people to each other. The people they know often come from a variety of social, cultural, professional and economic circles.
Mavens are people with a lot of knowledge or experts in a particular field. They wish to pass on their knowledge to others. Mavens collect and gather information so are the first to pick up on new trends.
Salesmen are people with charisma (魅力). They have a “soft” influence over people rather than actual power. This means they are influential because people want to imitate them.
Overall, Gladwell's book is a thought-provoking (引人深思的) read for anyone interested in the origins of trends. What's more, he writes in a clear style so even the most difficult ideas are easy to understand.

Chicken feathers are useful, and not just to chickens. Some go into pillows, coats and other products. But countless chicken feathers go to waste.
In the United States, billions of chickens are produced yearly. Most of their feathers are thrown away. But instead of ending up in landfills (废物埋填地), some feathers could find a future in plastics.
Scientists in the Washington area have been working with keratin, the main substance (物质) in chicken feathers. One of the products they have developed is a flowerpot which may look like other flowerpots, but the container breaks down in the earth within one to five years. And as it breaks down, it releases nitrogen (氮) into the soil.
The environmentally friendly flowerpot is the work of two researchers Walter Schmidt and Masud Huda. Walter Schmidt has been working to find uses for chicken feathers since the 1990s. Progress in 2002 showed that plastic made from feathers could be formed like other plastics.
He says feathers are much stronger and last longer than another plant material, cellulose (纤维素). “Feathers are about eight times as strong as cellulose. By design, feathers are strong and durable (耐用的).”
Walter Schmidt also points out that traditional flowerpots can last much longer. But he wonders if there is really a need. He says most flowerpots are never reused.
“Why would you want a plastic that you use for a year to last for two hundred years? It makes no sense. You want to match the product with the use,” he says.
Walter Schmidt and Masud Huda are now adding another chicken product to their flowerpots
—chicken waste. The waste will add more nutrients to the soil as the pot breaks down. The scientists say they hope their flowerpot will be on the market in a year or two.

Good afternoon! My name's Carl and I work for one of the major companies on High Street. I've been with them for about 13 years now. People often ask me why I decided to do this job. Well, as a young adult, I loved traveling and so went to work right after graduation as a salesman in Spain. I did that for 10 years.
