Scott and Daniel Harry are enjoying everyday tasks like shopping and washing for the first time following their move to an accommodation support house in Kurwongbah, north of Brisbane last year.
Disability Services Queensland’s Strengthening Non-Government Organisations project provided an accommodation support model that would enable residents (居住者) like Daniel and Scott to live more independently.
The house is just one of many accommodation support services funded through the project. The five-bedroom house provides 24-hour care for up to four individuals with complex needs, including medical support. Care and staffing levels are varied and flexible, depending on each resident’s requirements.
Scott and Daniel, who have a severe form of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, require 24-hour support in all activities of daily living. Before they moved to the house, they lived with their
family. Scott says living at home was difficult as it placed a physical and emotional burden on their parents who had to wake them several times each night to reposition them or place them on breathing machines.
“We were heavyhearted,” says Scott, who is planning to write a book about his life experiences. “But our parents now have a lot more time for themselves. We now manage ourselves on a day-to-day basis.”
Daniel is an enthusiastic gardener, taking care of his own vegetable garden. The men share the house with one other young man, and they go to rugby league games, meeting up with friends.
Leeding Care Australia provides the care service at Kurwongbah. Manager Lee Garniss says setting up the facilities (设施) has not been without its challenges.
“It is an unconventional model of care,” Lee says. “The home is Scott and Daniel’s home, however it is also a workplace for their support staff. Balancing these two requirements has been a challenge for all.”
“We have experienced a bit of a learning phase over the last twelve months. However, by working as a team we try our best to meet the needs of both residents and staff and I think we have achieved the right balance.”
24. What do we know about the house Scott and Daniel live in now?
A. It was built by their parents. B. It can accommodate four residents.
C. It belongs to a governmental project. D. It’s located in the center of Brisbane.
25. Why did Scott and Daniel’s parents wake up frequently at night?
A. To help them do exercise. B. They were making a lot of noise.
C. To check on their breathing. D. They were under emotional pressure.
26. How did Scott feel while living with his parents?
A. A bit guilty. B. Quite happy. C. Very proud. D. Slightly angry.
27. What was a challenge while setting up the facilities?
A. Lack of fund. B. No workplace.
C. Inexperienced staff members. D. Satisfying both staff and residents’ needs.

Gene therapy (基因治疗) is a revolutionary new technique for treating people with health problems. Up until very recently, the most commonly available methods for treating patients were
either through drugs or operations. Gene therapy provides a third option for treatment by transforming or replacing cells with new genetic materials and instructions. Scientists can be very precise in the kinds of changes they make in patients.
Gene therapy works by using a delivery system, such as a virus, to enter a patient's body. Once inside the body, the virus combines with a host cell and delivers the new DNA.The proteins then begin to repair the affected cells. New techniques have focused on removing cells from the patients and transforming them outside the body before reintroducing them to the patients.
The two types of gene therapy are called somatic and germline. Somatic therapy refers to changing or replacing a body cell. In this case, the treatment is restricted to the patient only. This will not affect the patient's future children because the patient's germ (生殖) cells are unaffected. In germline therapy, the patient germ cells are treated, which may affect the patient's future generation. This is highly controversial because it is not clear exactly how this might affect them and further generations. For this reason, many countries have passed laws that prohibit this kind of treatment.
Despite the promise of gene therapy, there are still many barriers(障碍) that need to be overcome before it comes into widespread use. One of the issues is that the use of viruses to deliver DNA may actually cause unexpected problems in patients if the virus grows and attacks the body. Another problem is the nature of many diseases is very complex and spread throughout multiple genes. The use of gene therapy to change a single gene in the body would probably not be sufficient (足够的)as a cure. Finally, the costs of gene therapy are high. Some gene therapy procedures may cost over$1 million to undertake and require specialized doctors and equipment.
28.What does the underlined word ''them'' in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Techniques. B.Cells. C.Patients. D.Proteins.
29.What can we learn about gene therapy?
A.Gene therapy has been put into practice widely.
B.The cells of patients are developed in healthy people.
C.Viruses entering the body can mix with host cells and form new DNA.
D.Both somatic and germline therapy have side effects on later generations.
30.What's the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The disadvantages of gene therapy.
B.The promising future of gene therapy.
C.The high costs of treatment procedures.
D.The issues related to viruses and complex genes.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Why Gene Therapy Procedures Are Extremely Expensive
B.Gene Therapy: A Dangerous New After-operation Treatment
C.Gene Therapy: A Contemporary Progressive Treating Method
D.Scientists Are Accurate in Performing the Categories of Surgery

Research shows that childhood friendships are important indicators of future success and social adjustment. Children’s relationships with peers strongly influence their success in school, and children with fewer friends are more at risk of dropping out of school, becoming depressed and other problems.
Making and Keeping Friends Is More than Child’s Play
When 6-year-old Rachel returned to school on a recent Monday morning, her eyes immediately scanned the playground for her friend Abbie. “Though they were only separated by a weekend, the girls ran right into each other’s arms and hugged,” recalls Rachel’s mother Kathryn Willis of Gilbert. “It was like a scene from a movie.”
Most parents instinctively (本能地) know that having friends is good for their child. Experts agree that friendship is not simply child’s play, but a powerful predictor of social adjustment throughout life.
A Skill for Life
“Childhood friendships serve as a very important training ground for adulthood,” says Dr. Robbie Adler-Tapia, psychologist with the Center for Children’s Health & Life Development at the East Valley Family Resource Center.
Researcher William Hartup states,“Peer relations contribute significantly to both social and cognitive (认知的) development.” Hartup concludes that the single best childhood predictor of adult social adaptation is not school grades or classroom behavior, but rather, how well a child gets along with other children.
The work of Arizona State University professor of Developmental Psychology Gary Ladd
proves that being able to make and keep friends is beneficial to kids while the lack of friends is detrimental.
Good Friendships Don’t Just Happen
Experts agree that it is essential for children to establish high quality friendships. But,researchers warn, these friendships don’t necessarily just happen. Often,a good friendship begins with involved parents.
Psychologist Dr.Lynne Kenney Markan believes kids should be taught social skills in much the same way they are taught math and reading.
Bad Company
Many parents worry about the quality as well as the quantity of their child’s friendships. “When she was in 1st grade, her supposed ‘best friend’ began calling her names and threatening to hurt her,” says Mindy Miller. “My daughter wasn’t allowed to talk to or even look at other girls in her class. It really crushed her spirit. I told my daughter she didn’t need a ‘friend’ like that.”
“I’ll bend over backwards(拼命) to help my son get together with a friend I think is good for him,” Adler-Tapia says. “I don’t look at it as manipulation (操纵),just positive parental involvement.”
32. The example of Rachel and Abbie is used to indicate that________.
A. childhood friendship is of great significance to their growth
B. a positive friendship helps children solve emotional and physical problems
C. it is a proven fact that peer friendship is the most rewarding experience throughout life
D. Rachel missed her friend Abbie very much because of their separation of one weekend
33.The underlined word “detrimental” could be replaced by________.
A. Aggressive B. disappointing
C. ridiculous D. harmful
34.We can learn from the passage that highquality friendship most probably results from_____.
A. social skills and good study habits
B. school grades and classroom behaviors
C. academic success and social adaptation
D. positive parental involvement and social skills
35. From the last paragraph we can conclude that Dr.Robbie AdlerTapia agrees that________.
A. parents should regard making friends as something that just happens
B. it’s wise for parents to support and encourage healthy peer relationships
C. parents only need to help their children to cope with difficult social situations
D. parents are supposed to encourage their children to make as many friends as they can

Each one of us has different natural and acquired abilities. Some learn new languages quickly, and some are more social than others. 36 Obviously, people interpret what you're saying in different ways, based on the way they think.
37 While expecting to convince others, we rely on our own thinking tools and strengths. It doesn't matter if you're trying to persuade your boss to adopt a new idea. But when you need to persuade your colleague, switch chairs with your listener and ask yourself what his or her strength is. Sure, you take into account what's important to them.
38 Try to fit someone you work with into the different thinking categories-individual thinking or group thinking. To quickly identify if someone thinks better individually or in a group, I ask one simple question:Did you prefer studying by yourself or in a group in high school? You'll find out most people will answer in the blink of an eye.
Then how to communicate better after identifying individual or group thinking? 39 Individual thinkers need some time by themselves to digest a new idea. Therefore, try sending them suggestions by e-mail or introduce a new idea and then giving them some time to think about it. Group thinkers will react much better when talking about a new idea. 40 When group thinkers ask to talk about something, they're actually asking you to brainstorm with them to help find a solution using conversation.
A. Choose your presentation strategy.
B. You can find out which category you belong to.
C. It is a challenge to convince people around you.
D. So give them opportunities to voice their thoughts.
E. But how about understanding how they actually think?
F. Most people are more productive when working alone.
G. These strengths determine how we think and make decisions.

When talking about America, most people will think of great buildings and lively parties because Hollywood movies show us with the strongest America. What’s more, the media always report how powerful America is but foreign media criticizes China all the time. So people lost faith about our country. Actual, every country is not perfect. Recently, I’ve learned a lot about America, that helps me make a good judgement than before. A video has made by a Chinese student studying in America for 6 years. In the video he told people that not all places looked like those presenting on the screen and concluded that a perfect country did not exist. So we need to adopt a right attitude to our motherlands and don’t lose faith when seeing some bad sides.
