I am not sure why it wouldn’t let me log in; perhaps it was my ancient, out-of-date phone. But I wasn’t too upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media --- something more and more people are doing.‎ ‎ In the United States, Twitter is losing millions of users each month and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Some of these users may have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media platforms, while many others have quit because they felt that social media was having a negative effect on their happiness and overall quality of life.‎ Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of many Internet trolls(网络喷子) leaving negative comments. Ordinary people (like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying it less.‎ It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posing or reading posts, to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine(多巴胺) which is sometimes called the “reward molecule” and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on WeChat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That’s dopamine at work.‎ In my case, being off WeChat left me with a feeling of anxiety for a few days. No doubt I missed my dopamine. And I got e-mails from friends wondering if I was fine or if I was just being anti-social. But I soon began to feel quite peaceful and started to worry less about what other people were doing and concentrate more on my personal life. And it is an added bonus that I’m getting better sleep at night.‎ I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages. You could start by leaving your phone at home when you go to school (For some, that’s already a school rule). And it is also a good idea to charge your phone outside of your bedroom at night, as you are unlikely to get a good night’s sleep when the notification(通知) bell keeps ringing.‎ Someday I may reconnect with my WeChat account, but I' m not in a hurry. Life can be more relaxing and just as interesting without it.‎ ‎21. The author’s disconnection with WeChat is mentioned at the beginning to _________.‎ A. introduce the disadvantages of social media B. explain why he lost access to his WeChat account C. illustrate the function of dopamine D. prove how WeChat makes life easier ‎22. What is the current situation of social media in the United States according to the passage?‎ A. All Americans have their Twitter and Facebook.‎ B. Famous people have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media.‎ C. An increasing number of people are losing interest in social media.‎ D. Social media add to people’s happiness and life convenience.‎ ‎23. The fourth paragraph mainly talks about _________.‎ A. how dopamine works when you are posting or reading posts.‎ B. the reason behind people’s addiction to social media.‎ C. why WeChat is so popular among ordinary people.‎ D. what you can do if you want to get many likes on WeChat.‎ ‎24. What is the author’s attitude towards social media?‎ A. To turn away from them as soon as possible.‎ B. To choose a social media platform that suits you.‎ C. To keep away from them temporarily is a wise choice.‎ D. To quit them will make your life more relaxing and interesting.‎ B No one has a temper naturally so good that it does not need attention and cultivation, and no one has a temper so bad, but that, by proper culture, it may become pleasant. One of the best disciplined tempers ever seen, was that of a gentleman who was naturally quick, irritable, rash, and violent; but, by taking care of the sick, and especially of mentally deranged(疯狂的) people, he so completely mastered himself that he was never known to be thrown off his guard.‎ There is no misery so constant, so upsetting, and so intolerable to others, as that of having a character which is your master. There are corners at every turn in life, against which we may run, and at which we may break out in impatience, if we choose.‎ Look at Roger Sherman, who rose from a humble occupation to a seat in the first Congress of the United States, and whose judgment was received with great respect by that body of distinguished men. He made himself master of his temper and cultivated it as a great business in life. There are one or two instances which show this part of his character in a light that is beautiful.‎ One day, after having received his highest honors, he was sitting and reading in his sitting room. A student, in a room close by, held a lookingglass in such a position as to pour the reflected rays of the sun directly in Mr. Sherman’s face. He moved his chair, and the thing was repeated. A third time the chair was moved, but the lookingglass still reflected the sun in his eyes. He laid aside his book, went to the window, and many witnesses of the rude behavior expected to see the ungentlemanly student severely punished. He raised the window gently, and then—shut the window blind!‎ I cannot help providing another instance of the power he had acquired over himself. He was naturally possessed of strong passions, but over these he at length obtained an extraordinary control. He became habitually calm and selfpossessed. Mr. Sherman was one of those men who are not ashamed to maintain the forms of religion in their families. One morning he called them all together as usual to lead them in prayer to God. The “old family Bible” was brought out and laid on the table.‎ Mr. Sherman took his seat and placed beside him one of his children, a child of his old age. The rest of the family were seated around the room, several of whom were now grownups. Besides these, some of the tutors of the college were boarders in the family and were present at the time. His aged mother occupied a corner of the room, opposite the place where the distinguished Judge sat.‎ At length, he opened the Bible and began to read. The child who was seated beside him made some little disturbance, upon which Mr. Sherman paused and told it to be still. Again he continued but again he had to pause to scold the little offender, whose playful character would scarcely permit it to be still. At this time he gently tapped its ear. The blow, if blow it might be called, caught the attention of his aged mother, who now with some effort rose from the seat and tottered across the room. At length, she reached the chair of Mr. Sherman, and in a moment, most unexpectedly to him, she gave him a blow on the ear with all the force she could gather. “There,” said she, “you strike your child, and I will strike mine.”‎ For a moment, the blood was seen mounting to the face of Mr. Sherman. But it was only for a moment and all was calm and mild as usual. He paused; he raised his glasses; he cast his eye upon his mother; again it fell upon the book from which he had been reading. Not a word escaped him; but again he calmly pursued the service, and soon sought in prayer an ability to set an example before his household which should be worthy of their imitation. Such a victory was worth more than the proudest one ever achieved on the field of battle.‎ ‎25. The following sentence should be put at the beginning of Paragraph ________.‎ The difference in the happiness which is received by the man who governs his temper and that by the man who does not is dramatic(戏剧性的,巨大的).‎ A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five ‎26. How is the passage mainly developed?‎ A. By analyzing reasons. B. By giving examples.‎ C. By listing arguments. D. By comparing facts.‎ ‎27. What was Roger Sherman’s attitude towards his aged mother?‎ A. Grateful. B. Skeptical. C. Tolerant. D. Sympathetic.‎ ‎28. What can we learn about Roger Sherman?‎ A. He came from a distinguished family background.‎ B. He was not good at displaying his true inner feelings.‎ C. He severely punished a student who didn't behave himself.‎ D. He was a man conscious of the consequences of his behavior.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?‎ A. Mr. Sherman’s face was covered with blood.‎ B. Mr. Sherman was then on the point of exploding C. Mr. Sherman was seeking strength in prayer.‎ D. Mr. Sherman was ashamed of his mother’s rude behavior.‎ ‎ C Old problem, new approaches While clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades after CO2 emissions (排放) peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation.‎ When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that: “There is no ‘onesize fits all’ adaptation.” Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost.‎ Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries. Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others saw only disaster. His notforprofit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity(连接) to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level: his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds to prevent starvation during the wet season.‎ Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers (冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200,000m3 of water.‎ ‎ Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ice reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.‎ Increasing Earth's reflectiveness can cool the planet. In southern Spain the sudden increase of greenhouses (which reflect light back to space) has changed the warming trend locally, and actually cooled the region. While Spain as a whole is heating up quickly, temperatures near the greenhouses have decreased. This example should act as an inspiration for all cities. By painting buildings white, cities may slow down the warming process.‎ In Peru, local farmers around a mountain with a glacier that has already fallen victim to climate change have begun painting the entire mountain peak white in the hope that the added reflectiveness will restore the lifegiving ice. The outcome is still far from clear. But the World Bank has included the project on its list of “100 ideas to save the planet”.‎ More ordinary forms of adaptation are happening everywhere. A friend of mine owns an area of land in western Victoria. Over five generations the land has been too wet for cropping. But during the past decade declining rainfall has allowed him to plant highly profitable crops. Farmers in many countries are also adapting like this—either by growing new produce, or by growing the same things differently. This is common sense. But some suggestions for adapting are not. When the polluting industries argue that we've lost the battle to control carbon pollution and have no choice but to adapt, it's a nonsense designed to make the case for business as usual.‎ Human beings will continue to adapt to the changing climate in both ordinary and astonishing ways. But the most sensible form of adaptation is surely to adapt our energy systems to emit less carbon pollution. After all, if we adapt in that way, we may avoid the need to change in so many others.‎ ‎30.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 implies ________.‎ A.adaptation is an everchanging process B.the cost of adaptation varies with time C.global warming affects adaptation forms D.adaptation to climate change is challenging ‎31.What is special with regard to Rezwan’s project?‎ A.The project receives government support.‎ B.Different organizations work with each other.‎ C.His organization makes the best of a bad situation.‎ D.The project connects flooded roads and highways.‎ ‎32.What did the Ice Man do to reduce the effect of global warming?‎ A.Protecting the glaciers from melting.‎ B.Changing the irrigation time.‎ C.Storing ice for future use.‎ D.Postponing the melting of the glaciers.‎ ‎33. What do we learn from the Peru example?‎ A.White paint is usually safe for buildings.‎ B.Sunlight reflection may relieve global warming.‎ C.This country is heating up too quickly.‎ D.The global warming trend cannot be stopped.‎ ‎34.According to the author, polluting industries should ________.‎ A.adapt to carbon pollution B.plant highly profitable crops C.leave carbon emission alone D.fight against carbon pollution ‎35.What's the author's preferred solution to global warming?‎ A.Setting up a new standard.‎ B.Reducing carbon emission.‎ C.Adapting to climate change.‎ D.Monitoring polluting industries.‎ 第二节 七选五阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分 10分)‎ Without Her Name It is a truth universally acknowledged that Pride and Prejudice by English novelist Jane Austen is one of the most popular tales ever written. But behind the global admiration she enjoys today lies a sad fact.___36___‎ In Pride and Prejudice, she was simply the author of Sense and Sensibility, which had carried the title “By a Lady.” The anonymity(匿名) worked so well that even friends of the Austen family had no idea that dear, sweet Jane was a novelist. Now pandas are at risk of dying out because they can’t get enough bamboo in the wild. ‎ M: I read an article saying that pandas don’t just eat bamboo. It says they also have a sweet tooth. They like apples, sweet potatoes and even mooncakes.‎ W: Really? In that case, we can feed them other things.‎ Text 6 ‎ W: Fish, pork, rice, broccoli, potatoes, onions, bananas… 6I’ve got all I need here, except a bottle of Japanese soy sauce and a bottle of Chinese vinegar. Where do you keep those, sir?‎ M: They’re on the shelf right behind you.‎ W: Oh, I didn’t look this way … good, just my favorite brands … here we are. How much is everything altogether?‎ M: 7That’s $43 even, plus $3.10 tax. Will there be anything else?‎ W: Oh, yes. I’ll have a copy of today’s New York Times. 7That’ll be another sixty cents. Here’s my credit card.‎ M: Thanks, and you can get a postcard for free today. Have a nice day.‎ Text 7 ‎ M: So, what seems to be the problem, ma’am?‎ W: 8It keeps on making this strange noise every time I start it. It’s like a “shh shh shh” sound, and it disappears as soon as I drive about one block.‎ M: How long has it had this problem?‎ W: I guess it’s been about a month. ‎ M: Well, I can’t tell you much without taking a closer look, 9but I’m afraid we’re fully booked for the rest of the morning. Is there any way you can bring it back this afternoon?‎ W: Hmm, I don’t think so. I’ve got a meeting on the west side of town at three. Could I bring it back tomorrow?‎ M: Let me check my notebook. Just a moment…‎ Text 8 ‎ M: Anna, I heard you’re going to Brazil. The World Cup is already over. Why are you going there? ‎ W: 10I’m going there for a vacation with my parents. My parents don’t like watching football games, but they like Brazil, so we’ll go there this summer.‎ M: I heard Mark is going there, too. What is he going to do there?‎ W: He’s going there to take part in a competition. ‎ M: A competition? What is it?‎ W: Have you heard about the RoboCup?‎ M: No. What is it? ‎ W: The RoboCup is for people who love creating robots. During the event, some teams of robots will play football in a game.‎ M: Really? That sounds amazing. I had no idea that Mark creates robots!‎ W: 11He’s crazy about robots. 12Actually, his team has taken part in the RoboCup three times. ‎ M: Will you go and watch it?‎ W: Yes. I’ll go and cheer for Mark’s team.‎ Text 9 ‎ W: 13Are you going to find a job this summer?‎ M: 1314Yes, of course. Otherwise, how am I going to pay the school fees for my third year in college?‎ W: I am thinking of working too, but my parents insist I have to spend some time with them during the summer. You know, I haven’t seen them for two years.‎ M: Why haven’t you been home for so long?‎ W: My parents were volunteering in an organization in South America for the last couple of years.‎ M: In that case, it’s probably more important for you to visit them this summer.‎ W: That’s true, but I didn’t want to spend the whole summer at home. I want to make some money and pay off my tuition fees too.‎ M: Well, you can always get a loan. The rate is not high and the procedure is easy.‎ W: 15Loan? I hate the idea of borrowing. I would rather make my own money and pay it off.‎ M: I know, but it’s common for people to pay their school fees once they’ve graduated.‎ W: Yes, but that’s exactly what I didn’t want to get myself into. So what do I do about money?‎ M: Well, why not do both? 16You can work a part-time job when you are at home.‎ W: I was thinking about that but my parents think I should be at home with them full-time.‎ M: Well, I think you have to make a decision then.‎ Text 10 ‎ W: Welcome to Language International.
