RISE is an exciting project designed and led by young people, for young people. Created by St. John Ambulance, the nation’s leading first aid charity, the project is now available in communities across the country. If you’re aged between 16 and 25 years old, and are not in employment, education or training, RISE could help you learn new skills, and improve your prospects (前景).

Stick-it: Our one-day introduction to first aid focuses on gun and knife related injuries. You'll find out how to manage an incident and learn some of the most commonly needed first aid skills.
First aid: You'll focus on CPR (心肺复苏术), bleeds and dealing with an emergency situation on this six-hour course.
Keeping children safe: A course designed for those who come into contact with children through their work or leisure activities. This short programme works by helping individuals to understand the unusual role they play in keeping children safe from harm.
Basic skills In youth work: This course provides an introduction to St John Ambulance and is the minimum (最低的) qualification for a youth leadership role within the organization.

When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I never felt bored. The fields, hills and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground whose adventures were only limited by my imagination. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and walking slowly around it. At the back of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road
that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tyre tracks and deep woods on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn and walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would
be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away, but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.
I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on the earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love! May you always help your fellow travelers along the way! And may your roads always lead you home again !

The death of languages is not a new phenomenon. Languages usually have a relatively short life span as well as a very high death rate. Only a few, including Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, Latin, have lasted more than 2,000 years.
What is new, however, is the speed at which they are dying out. Europe’s colonial conquests caused a sharp decrease in linguistic diversity(语言多样性), getting rid of at least 15 percent of all languages spoken at the time. Over the last 300 years, Europe has lost a dozen, and Australia has only 20 left of the 250 spoken at the end of the 18th century.
The rise of nation-states has also been decisive in selecting and strengthening national languages and sidelining (使退出) others. By making great efforts to establish an official language in education, the
media and the civil service, national governments have tried to remove minority languages on purpose.
This process of linguistic standardization has been boosted by industrialization and scientific progress, which have imposed(推行)new methods of communication that are quick, straightforward and practical. Linguistic diversity came to be seen as an obstacle(障碍)to trade and the spread of knowledge. Monolingualism(单一语言)became an ideal.
More recently, the internationalization of financial markets, the spread of information by electronic media and other ways of globalization have strengthen the threat to “small” languages. A language not on the Internet is a language that “no longer exists” in the modern world. It is out of the game.
The serious effects of the death of languages are evident. First of all, it is possible that if we all ended up speaking the same language, our brains would lose some of their natural ability of linguistic creativity. We would never be able to figure out the beginnings of human language or resolve the mystery of “the first language”. As each language dies, a chapter of human history closes.
Multilingualism(多语制)is the most accurate reflection of multiculturalism. The destruction of the first will unavoidably lead to the loss of the second. Imposing a language without any links to a people’s culture and way of life stifles the expression of their collective genius. A
language is not only used for the main tool of human communication. It also expresses the world vision of those who speak it, their ways of using knowledge. To safeguard languages is an urgent (紧急的) matter.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when
a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent.
