第Ⅰ卷 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)‎ 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)‎ A ‎ Jack Benny was one of the most famous names in show business for more than 50 years. Jack Benny was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 14th, 1894. His parents, Meyer and Emma Kubelsky, were religious Jews. They had moved to the United States from Eastern Europe. Benjamin was a quiet boy. For much of the time, his parents were busy working in his father’s store. As a child, Benjamin, or Benny as his friends called him, learned to play the violin. After finishing his school, he joined the Navy. He continued using his violin to perform for sailors. In one show he was chosen more for his funny jokes than for his skill with the violin. That experience made him believe that his future job was a comedian. Jack Benny developed a show business personality that had all the qualities people dislike. He was known for being so stingy-he refused to spend any of his money, unless forced to do so. He always was concerned about money. On his shows Benny often spoke of his appearance, especially his baby blue eyes. As he grew older, he always claimed to be 39 years old. Benny rarely made jokes that hurt other people. Instead, he would let the other actors on the show tell jokes about him.‎ ‎ In real life, he was known to be very giving and he was a person people liked having as their employer. Jack Benny entered the new medium of television in 1950. Five years later, he dropped his radio program to spend more time developing his television show. At first, his appearances on television were rare. By 1960, the Benny show was a weekly television program. It continued until 1965. Benny appeared in about 20 films during his life. A few became popular. But most were not. In 1963, Benny returned to Broadway for the first time since 1931.‎ ‎ Jack Benny received many awards during his lifetime. Perhaps the one honor that pleased him most was that his hometown of Waukeegan named a school for him. This was a special honor for a man who had never finished high school.‎ ‎ Benny continued to perform. He died of cancer in 1974. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes. As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy castle, any frustration will float away as gently as the circling water. For many, fishing is more than a sport; it is an art.‎ ‎ Scotland offers interesting place where you can rest after a long day's fishing. Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland, the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland's mountains. Ben Nevis is the highest of mountains, and reaching its 1342-metre top ‎ is a challenge. But it's not just what goes matters; what comes down is unique. More than 900 meters high, on the mountain's north is an all-important source of pure water. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in a garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.‎ ‎ A biodegradable(生物所能分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.‎ ‎ Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. Over time it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed .When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms fertilizers.‎ ‎ These feed the seed and help the flower grow.‎ ‎ Engineers have designed a small transparent(透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the cover so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.‎ ‎ As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists.‎ ‎ ”The seed comes out and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kieran. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.‎ ‎29.What is the purpose of this passage?‎ ‎ A. To tell the popularity of biodegradable cell phones ‎ B. To persuade the reader to buy the biodegradable cell phone ‎ C. To discuss the development of phone technology ‎ D. To introduce an environmentally-friendly cell phone to readers ‎30.People throw away their cell phones most probably because .‎ ‎ A. there is something wrong with them ‎ B. no sunflowers can grow out of them ‎ C. they are out of fashion ‎ D. they are becoming cheaper and cheaper ‎31.What might be the best title for this passage?‎ ‎ A. Sunflower and Phone B. Plant Your Phone ‎ C. Protect Our Environment D. No Worry about Phone ‎32.Where can we probably find the passage above?‎ ‎ A. In a novel B. In a magazine C. In a textbook D. In a diary D ‎ Your glasses may someday replace your smartphone, and some New Yorkers are ready for the switch. Some in the city can’t wait to try them on and use the maps and GPS ‎ that the futuristic eyewear is likely to include.‎ ‎ "I'd use it if I were hanging out with friends at 3 a.m. and going to the bar and wanted to see what was open," said Walter Choo, 40, of Fort Greene.‎ ‎ The smartphone-like glasses will likely come out this year and cost between $250 and $600, the Times said, possibly including a variation of augmented(增强的) reality, a technology already available on smartphones and tablets(平板电脑) that overlays information onto the screen about one's surroundings. So, for example, if you were walking down a street, indicators would pop up showing you the nearest coffee shop or directions could be plotted out and come into view right on the sidewalk in front of you.‎ ‎ "As far as a mainstream consumer product, this just isn't something anybody needs," said Sam Biddle, who writes for Gizmodo.com. "We're accustomed to having one thing in our pocket to do all these things," he added, "and the average consumer isn't gonna be able to afford another device(装置) that's hundreds and hundreds of dollars."‎ ‎ 9to5Google publisher Seth Weintraub, who has been reporting on the smartphone-like glasses since late last year, said he is confident that this type of wearable device will eventually be as common as smartphones.‎ ‎ "It's just like smartphones 10 years ago, "Weintraub said. "A few people started getting emails on their phones, and people thought that was crazy. Same kind of thing. We see people bending their heads to look at their smartphones, and it's unnatural," he said. "There's gonna be improvements to that, and this a step there."‎ ‎33.One of the possible functions of the smartphone-like glasses is to .‎ ‎ A. program the opening hours of a bar ‎ B. supply you with a picture of the future ‎ C. provide information about your surroundings ‎ D. update the maps and GPS in your smartphones ‎34.According to Sam Biddle, the smartphone-like glasses are .‎ ‎ A. necessary for teenagers ‎ B. attractive to New Yorkers ‎ C. available to people worldwide ‎ D. expensive for average consumers ‎35.We can learn from the last two paragraphs that the smartphone-like glasses .‎ ‎ A. may have a potential market ‎ B. are as common as smartphones ‎ C. are popular among young adults ‎ D. will be improved by a new technology 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world.
