Need a fall fix? Try one from these great places.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
The only way to reach this famed car-free island is by boat and ferry, and once visitors
arrive, they are attracted by the history, scenery and fall colors. "It's a throwback to years
past, a little town, and there's a big state park as well," Blackwell says. "You're allowed to
have boats all around the island."
Tellico Lake, Tennessee
With nearly 400 miles of shoreline, this waterway flowing out of the Great Smoky
Mountains is largely unexploited, well-protected in its natural state. Fall visitors find a
range of colors reflecting in the clean waters, says Blackwell, who vacationed in the area
with his family as a child. "The thick forest there just allows you to see more greenery and
wildlife."
Dillon Reservoir, Colorado
With an hour from Denver, this lake is home to what claims to be the nation's highest
sailing club, at an altitude of more than 9,000 feet. Marinas in the towns of Dillon and
Frisco make it easy to get out on the water and to see the bright yellows and golds of fall
leaves. "People are surprised that there's boating in Colorado, and you can see the
mountains just before the snowfall," Blackwell says.
Lake Monroe, Indiana
The state's largest lake is surrounded by more than 13,000 acres of protected forest and
three recreation areas, making it an ideal place to see fall colors, particularly from oaks and
the tulip poplar, the state tree. "It's a gem (宝石) in southern Indiana," says Blackwell, who
grew up in the area. "There are lots of different activities: canoeing, kayaking and fishing."
21. What is special about Mackinac Island?
A. It's like a modern city. B. Visitors can take a car around for free.
C. Visitors can see various wildlife there. D. Limited means of transport are offered.
22. Which is suitable for someone looking for an undeveloped place for vacation?
A. Mackinac Island, Michigan. B. Tellico Lake, Tennessee.
C. Dillon Reservoir, Colorado. D. Lake Monroe, Indiana.
23. What do the four places have in common?
A. Blackwell once travelled there.
B. They are all famous tourist destinations.
C. They are surrounded by thick forests.
D. Visitors can enjoy fall colors there.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it
as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens and
white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the
world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and
brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in
action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But
she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our
happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way
she chose that she did forgive me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer; none came.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace. It
seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to Mother.
I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she
was not.
Now the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was
pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some
papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many
times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always
chose the act that speaks louder than words.
24. The passage shows that _______.
A. Mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to the author
B. Mother was too serious about everything the author had done
C. Mother cared much about the author in words
D. Mother wrote to the author in careful words
25. The underlined word “gulf” in the passage means _______.
A. deep understanding B. difference between ideas
C. free talks D. part of the sea
26. What did Mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness?
A. She had never received the letter.
B. For years, she often talked about the letter.
C. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.
D. She read the letter again and again till she died.
27. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. My letter to Mother B. Mother and Children

One of the greatest killers in the Western World is heart disease. The death rate
from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years.
Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease.
Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by
exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more
attention to reducing stress in their work.
However, Western health-care systems are still not paying enough attention to the
prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public
about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs,
however, the US health-care system is spending large sums of money on the surgical
treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis on treatment clearly has
something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten
to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new
surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a
few years ago are now performed every day in US hospitals. The result has been a
huge increase in heart surgery.
Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people,
some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has
three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money from the question of
prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals
buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try
to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients,
not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage
is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery---even on patients for whom an
operation is unnecessary---because the equipment and expert skills are there. A
government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even
though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only
15 percent of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than
100 000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.
28. What effect has modern technology had on medicine?
A. It has reduced the costs of medical treatment.
B. It has helped save the lives of most patients.
C. It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgeries.
D. It has helped educate people about the prevention of heart disease.
29. “To do this” (in Paragraph 3) means ________.
A. to help patients recover
B. to increase the number of heart surgeries
C. to get back the money spent on the equipment
D. to buy new equipment for the treatment of heart disease
30. The author would agree that _______.
A. more money should be spent on the prevention of heart disease
高三英语 第 7页
B. heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditions
C. modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than before
D. the public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease
31. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Greatest Killer in the West
B. Heart Disease: Treat or Prevent
C. Modern Technology and Heart Surgery
D. Heart Surgery: Advantages and Disadvantages
D
As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is
likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a
washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with
almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and
possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once
a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about,
and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of
people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more
money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or
pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.
Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year.
One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central
London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank.
They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs,
leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until
eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for
meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was
passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a
farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift.
It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now
about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I
think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.
Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard
work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting
used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more
of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think
about it too much or you might not do it at all.”
32. The passage tells us that ________.
A. people seldom work long hours to make money
B. people hardly buy more things than necessary
C. people are sure everything they own is in the right place
D. people realize there is more to life than just making money
高三英语 第 8页
33. What does the author mean by saying “the long hours work culture to make more
money is eating up their lives” in the second paragraph?
A. People work long hours to earn their living.
B. To make more money through hard work is the aim of people’s life.
C. Long hours of hard work occupy too much of people’s life.
D. People spend too much time and money eating meals.
34. Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm ________.
A. was easy to organize B. has improved family life
C. was extremely expensive D. has been a total success
35. What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Child-caring B. Liz’s advice C. Downshifting D. Liz’s job

Why we still need to read Dickens
Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles
Dickens. Many of Dickens’ works still sell well today. 36
As someone who teaches Dickens, the question of why we still read him is often
on my mind. 37 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a
lecture, I was telling the students that for Victorian readers, Dickens’ writing was a
“tune-in-next-week” type of thing that generated crazes. 38 “But why should we
still read this stuff?” the student asked. The answer I gave was only acceptable,
“Because he teaches you how to think,” I said.
The question annoyed me for years, for years, and for years I told myself answers,
but never with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of
his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn
from experiences of his characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own
experiences.
39 But these are not exactly the reasons why I read Dickens. My search for
an answer continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We
still read Dickens’ novels,” she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.”
Simple as it was, that’s the explanation I had sought for years.
Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times.
40 If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what
it has to tell you about yourself.
A. Then a hand shot up.
B. I know that wasn’t really the reason.
C. And they are placed on outstanding shelves.
D. That question was never more troubling.
E. That’s why we still need to read him today.
F. I already know who it is I’ll meet in those novels.
G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens.

VI. 书面表达:(25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇 60 词左右的内容概要。
Wearing different colors
You might think that whether you choose a blue shirt or a yellow one to wear to
work or college makes no difference to your day and those around you. However, an
increasing number of experts argue that the colors we choose affect our mood, our
career prospects(前景)and even our health.
The power of color has been used for centuries and we should be making the most
of it in our lives. Color affects us to a greater degree than most of us realize. It is used
increasingly by psychologists and therapists for influencing mood and state of mind,
and for various types of treatments when we are ill. Some people even believe that the
blind can benefit from the “vibration”(震动)that color gives off.
Companies use color to great effect to encourage us to buy their products. For
example, purple is seen as creative and mixes well with red, to show that a company
has ideas and the power to make them happen. Orange and blue are also recommended
colors for companies to use, because orange is the color of communication and blue
suggests safety and security. So this could be a particularly good combination.
Companies have found certain colors “speak” to specific age groups. They often use
red to attract younger people to their products, for example, as it is vibrant and more
youthful than colors like gold and navy, which older customers seem to prefer.
Wearing different colors can affect how you feel and how others react to you, so it
is important to consider this when deciding what to wear in the morning. If you want
people to take you seriously, then wearing navy blue or black is good. Blue would also
be helpful for an interview or oral examination because it relaxes you and makes you
feel calm. Red gets you noticed by everyone and makes you, the wearer, feel energetic,
but be careful, as it can raise your pulse rate and not everyone wants this effect.
So think carefully before you leave the house. The colors you choose are a
wonderful tool. Are you making the right impression on yourself and on others?
