There are always a few wildfires in the forests of Canada in summer but this year has been exceptionally bad as we've had, for practical purposes, no rain at all. Then the fires started and many families have lost their homes to the flames. In early August we woke up one day to a heavy smoke from the mainland. It was dark for several days.By September, again the sun has been blocked by smoke, this time from Washington and Oregon in the United States. The smoke has covered us for about a week.‎ 高三英语 第 13 页 共 13 页 In the more than twenty years we've never before had this happen. Now we've been blanketed by smoke twice in one summer. The change in our climate is clear and it doesn't bode(预兆)well. Already our seaside town is putting regulations in place and making plans to deal with a rise in sea level. However, if the sea level comes up more than a few meters we could have big problems.‎ I don't pretend to understand all the causes of climate change or the best ways of fixing it if, indeed, it can be fixed. It is, however, becoming increasingly noticeable.Last night we were supposed to be able to see the Northern Lights but the smoke prevented that. But there's some good news.I have just noticed that for the first time in months it is raining.‎ ‎24.When did the author begin to be affected by climate change?‎ A.After the smoky days. B.In August this summer.‎ C.On arriving at the island. D.When the first fire broke out.‎ ‎25.What did the seaside town do with climate change?‎ A.It found the causes. B.It solved the problems.‎ C.It made a prediction. D.It took some measures.‎ ‎26.What's the good news the author mentioned in the last paragraph?‎ A.The coming of the rain. B.Seeing the Northern Lights.‎ C.The best way to fix the weather. D.The appearance of heavy smoke.‎ ‎27.What is the best title for the passage?‎ A.Causes of Climate Change B.Climate Change Hits Home C.Global Warming Is Less Serious D.Ways to Deal with the Rising Sea Level C Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy(哲学). Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.‎ Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis(肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.‎ At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized(批评) by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his love of rhythm(韵律).‎ John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based(叙事体的) and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own ‎ 高三英语 第 13 页 共 13 页 limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout(发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821.‎ ‎28. The message: Many of the machines are a major fire risk.‎ The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall (召回) of more than a half million hoverboards. The safety commission said that the battery powered machines had been the cause of at least 60 fires. The announcement affects 10 companies that make or sell the products, including Razor and Swagway, two of the leading manufacturers.‎ Hoverboards, which do not actually hover or fly and bear a slight resemblance to a skateboard, have been the subject of regulatory examination in recent years. Officials have banned them from airplanes and sidewalks, and the safety commission opened an investigation last fall because of reports of fires and explosions.‎ The risk of fires from the machine’s electrical system and battery pack has attracted the most attention from the safety commission, which says it will now turn its focus toward the risk of falls and other accidents. The agency is worried that flaws (缺陷) in the board’s design could lead riders to lose their balance.‎ There is no federal safety standard specific to hoverboards. Underwriters Laboratories(UL), a standards setting and testing organization, came up with voluntary electrical requirements for self-balancing hoverboards as a result of the safety commission’s investigation, said Elliot F. Kaye, the chairman of the CPSC.‎ He urged consumers to return any hoverboard that did not reach the standards set by the company. However, part of the problem, he explained, was that many hoverboards had been sold by temporary stands such as those in malls or college campuses—fly-by-night sellers that can be harder to track down or contact. “That is a deeply frustrating aspect of it,” Mr. Kaye said. “Somebody can just put up a stand, order a bunch of products, disappear, and there’s nobody there to take responsibility when things go wrong.”‎ 高三英语 第 13 页 共 13 页 ‎32. Why will so many hoverboards be recalled?‎ A. They are likely to cause fires. B. They aren’t easy to use.‎ C. They don’t actually hover or fly. D. They caused many traffic accidents.‎ ‎33.
