When was the last time you went to your local library? Last week? A month ago? A year ago?
For many reasons, borrowing books from libraries seems to be in decline(减少). With advances in technology, it is now possible for people to download and read whatever they like on electronic devices such as Kindles. It has been argued that doing this is cheaper than buying hard-copy books. They are also lightweight, making them ideal for travelling.
Call me old-fashioned, but I’ve never got into the e-book: I like to have printed books lining my bookshelves; I love the smell of a new book; and I enjoy leafing through paper pages — as long as I avoid the paper cuts!
So, even though I prefer paper books to e-books, I also prefer to own them myself. Libraries only lend books, so what use are they to someone like me, or to someone who only reads electronic books?
Personally, I still love libraries. They offer a quiet space to sit, read, think, do research … a real escape from the outside world. When I was at university, I frequently spent hours at the
library and borrowed numerous journals, articles and other printed materials, as it was just too expensive to buy brand new books every week to read for seminars and lectures. Libraries are free!
Libraries often organise an array of interesting activities as well. At home, my local library hosted actors, historians and other speakers during the town’s annual art and literature festival. Well-known authors are also invited to libraries to give speeches or lead discussions about their work. Events such as these are a great way to appeal to people of all ages in the community and encourage the use of libraries.
There are still many fantastic ways to use libraries — maybe we just need to be more awake to them!
24. What is the writer’s purpose of using question sentences in Paragraph 1?
A. To make readers answer questions. B. To attract readers’ attention.
C. To introduce the topic of the passage. D. To do a survey.
25. What can we know about e-books?
A. They are cheap and easy to take. B. They are easy to buy.
C. They can be borrowed from libraries. D. They are a waste of energy.
26. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Paper books. B. E-books.
C. Libraries. D. Bookshelves.
27. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The end of the library? B. The reasons for my loving libraries.
C. Which is better, e-books or paper books? D. The last time of visiting your local library.

Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing(去掉) seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end.
The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience(观众
) wanting to say good-be to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.
Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location(位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”
Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located.
The theater audience said good-by as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater has shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.
28. In what way was yesterday’s cleanup at the Plaza special?
A. It made room for new equipment. B. It signaled the closedown of the theater.
C. It was done with the help of the audience. D. It marked the 75th anniversary of the theater.
29. Why was The Last Picture Show put on?
A. It was an all-time classic. B. It was about the history of the town.
C. The audience requested it. D. The theater owner found it suitable.
30. What will probably happen to the building?
A. It will be repaired. B. It will be turned into a museum.
C. It will be knocked down. D. It will be sold to the city government.
31. What can we infer about the audience?
A. They are disappointed with Bradford. B. They are sad to part with the old theater.
C. They are supportive of the city officials. D. They are eager to have a shopping center. D
Kids are natural scientists. That may be why they ask so many questions.
Younger kids take up science and math with amazing enthusiasm, yet as they get older they often lose their excitement. Children look on scientific exploration as play, but as they get older they start to connect it with big heavy books, long worksheets and a lot of really confusing words.
What a tragedy(不幸)!We had their attention, they were listening, they were participating, they were learning and then we lost it to boredom.
We need our kids to play more. More play brings up basic scientific concepts(概念).Being familiar with basic scientific concepts brings about exploration which leads to research. Once they are researching, they are completely into the learning.
My boys built a small 9hole golf course next to our driveway one day. It was a great product of science. They dug out the holes and channels to guide the golf ball. They played with architecture(建筑学)with a series of pipes they had found in the garage. They tested speed and momentum(动量)by creating one of the holes across the driveway. They experienced biology when deciding which front yard plants could be used as a part of the course and which needed to be pulled up.
If I had sent them out to the yard to build a 9hole golf course,it would have never happened. It was because it was their idea that it worked. I try to tell them some of the concepts after the fact. When they ask about something,I try to relate it back to something they have built, experienced,or felt. I try to give them a vocabulary around what they already know.
An afternoon can change the way kids look at the world. Not bad for a day of play.
32. What can we learn about kids' attitudes towards science from the first three paragraphs?
A. Kids think they are born to work as scientists.
B. Younger kids begin to learn science on purpose.
C. Older kids often link science with boring things.
D. Children's taking an interest in science is a tragedy
33.By building the small golf course, the writer's boys learnt about all of the following things EXCEPT________.
A. speed B. momentum C. biology D. agriculture
34.If the writer had forced the boys to build a small golf course, they might have _______.
A. asked her some related scientific concepts
B. made a better golf course than the one they had built
C. asked their friends to help them with the work
D. got bored and refused to follow the writer's directions
35. In which part of a newspaper is the article probably included?
A. Architecture. B. Education. C.Health. D. Sports.

Everyone wants to be happy. You see people who are smiling and laughing, and you want to be like them. 36 However, there are also bad days. Here are three ways to make you happier every day.
Smile often. Research has shown that the facial expression you wear influences your state of mind. 37 Wearing a pleasant expression for a long period of time will slowly improve your feelings and help you have a happier day.
38 The more you complain, the more annoyed(恼怒的) you become. If all you notice or talk about during the day are the things that annoy you, it is no surprise that you are unhappy. To truly increase your long-term happiness, don’t complain any longer. 39
Practice thankfulness. Thankfulness has been shown to be the last ticket to a happy life. The more you practice thankfulness, the more you will find things to be grateful for in your life. 40 Even something as simple as a safe place to sleep or food to eat is worth being thankful for because not everyone is fortunate enough to have those necessities.

书面表达:
Dear Mike,
How are you doing these days?
Aiming at providing a platform where students can have a chance to exchange and make use of their books, the annual campus book fair will soon be held in our school. The fair will attract a huge crowd from the entire school, who are to sell, buy and exchange their second-hand books with their peers.
As a regular visitor, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn by the fair. For one thing, the fair exhibits books of hundreds of types on diverse topics, motivating us to further develop our reading habits and help to broaden our horizons. For another, most books are sold at a lower price than what the bookstores offer.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to host such a book fair better.
Yours,
Li Hua
