Were dinosaurs( 恐 龙 ) warm-blooded or cold-blooded? According to a new study, scientists have found that
they were somewhere in the middle. This new study shows that dinosaurs were very different from most of today’s animals that are either warm or cold-blooded.
“I think we were all surprised by this,” said Felisa Smith from the University of New Mexico. “The idea certainly took some getting used to.”
A study by a team of scientists led by John M. Grady of the university studied many different kinds of dinosaurs in their research. They looked at growth rate (比率), body temperature and body size of different kinds of dinosaurs.
How are warm-blooded animals different from cold-blooded animals? Warm-blooded animals like humans can control their body temperature. They eat a lot, and burn calories (卡路里) quickly. They have a more active lifestyle than cold-blooded animals while cold-blooded animals such as snakes do not control their body temperature.
Instead, they must use sunlight to keep warm, and they move much more slowly. Cold-blooded animals do not need to eat very much. Their bodies slow down in colder temperatures.
Besides dinosaurs, there are other animals that are not completely warm-blooded or cold-blooded, such as great white sharks.

A university in southwest China’s Chongqing City set up a reading room as part of a campaign that stops students from taking their mobile phones with them in case the device distracts(使分心) them from concentrating on their studies.
Reportedly, a student named Hu Xiaopeng participating in the campaign studied 530 minutes without using his mobile phone. Unlike Hu, another one picked up his mobile phone in less than 20 minutes. “Having seen many students use their mobile phones in the library, a habit that shortens their study time and negatively impacts their
learning, we decided to open this reading room,” said Zhang Shuran, the person responsible for the project at the university.
Zhang added that students can keep their phones in appointed bags with numbers on them. The hags are placed on a desk near the door of the reading room. “Staff members at the reading room will check the phones when there’s a call,” said Zhang, adding that they will inform students when their parents or teachers call them, but will not tell students if an unknown person is calling or when there is a text message. Based on the time students hand in their phones when they come to the reading room and the time they get them back when they leave the room, Hu Xiaopeng from College of Animal Science and Technology of the university set a record of the longest time.Hu spent 530 minutes studying without using his phone. Though feeling somewhat surprised, Hu said, “It’s bad to keep mobile phone with you when you are reading or studying.”
The campaign has attracted nearly 200 students since it was launched a week ago. Some Internet users praised the campaign. One user named Liu Jingchang said, “It’s good. I don’t bring my phone when going to the library in case I get distracted.”

Microplastic particles( 微塑料颗粒)appear to be killing fish because some baby fish prefer to eat the particles
rather than their actual food, researchers have warned.
With fears that the amount of plastic in the oceans could soon equal the weight of fish in the sea, scientists have become increasingly concerned about the effects on the marine environment.
Now a study published in the journal Science has found that baby perch(鲈鱼)will actively choose to eat plastic
over the plankton they would normally feed on. The researchers said this greatly increased death rates of the perch, stopping their growth and appearing to change usual behavior. For example, they are losing the ability to smell a predator(捕食者), which makes them much more vulnerable.
Professor Peter Eklov, a co-author of the Science paper, said: “This is the first time an animal has been found to prefer to eat plastic particles over food. Increases in microplastic pollution in the Baltic Sea and decreases of the coastal basic species( 物种) have recently been noticed. When placed in a tank, perch exposed to microplastic were
eaten four times more quickly than perch that had not been eating plastic.”
Fellow researcher Oona Lpnnstedt stressed the effects of fish eating large amounts of plastic were likely to be
felt throughout the food chain. “If early life-history stages of other species are similarly affected by microplastics, this will in turn increase death rates, so the effects on marine ecosystems could be lasting,” she said.
Microplastic is produced as larger pieces of plastic waste are broken down in the environment, but large quantities of microfibers from synthetic clothes —materials essentially made of plastic —are produced each time
they are washed and are small enough to pass through waste water treatment plants and get into the sea.
Cosmetics( 化 妆 品 ) companies are also continuing to put microplastic pieces into their products, but the industry says it will try to stop using them by 2020.
32. What are the scientists worried about?
A. Large amounts of plastic in the ocean B. The rising water temperature
C. The loss of food sources D. Fishes growing bigger and bigger
33. The underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 3 probably means “ ”.
A. strong B. easily harmed C. active D. well protected
34. What can we know from the text?
A. Only species that eat plastic particles will be affected.
B. Fish farming contributes much to the pollution of the food chain. C. Products used in our daily life may produce microplastic.
D. Microplastic means the breakdown of large pieces of plastic.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Let’s Protect the Marine Animals B. The Oceans Are Full of Microplastic Particles
C. The Effects of Plastic Pollution D. Fish Prefer to Eat Plastic over Food

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships do not last very long. 36 You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules. Be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. 37 If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes of course. Instead, you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your feelings. 38 They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know you better.
39 Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put in your friend’s place, so you can understand the problem better.
40 But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practise honesty, generosity, and understanding.
A. These can be very valuable to a friend.
B. Not all people can enjoy a true friendship. C. Friends must be able to trust one another. D. No two friendships are ever exactly alike. E. To have a friend, you must learn to be one.

Dear Mr. Green,
I am Li Hua, a student in your oral class. I can hardly catch up with you in class, which makes me very upset. Therefore, I am writing to seek your kind help.
I am poor in English, so I am working hard to improve it. Though your oral class is very interesting and my classmates like it very much, I have a lot of difficulty understanding what you are talking about in class, especially when you tell jokes. There have been many times when most of my classmates laugh happily, but I can’t figure out why. I am eager to improve my English and change the embarrassing situation. Would you please give me some advice? I would appreciate it very much if you could lend me a helping hand.
I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
