My daddy worked hard to support our family in the 1940s. The year I was eight, we barely had two dimes(十分硬币) for the coming Christmas.
Our neighbor suggested that we hang lights in our yard to lift the Christmas spirit along our street. However, we had just enough money for things to decorate our living room.
There was a hardware store(五金店) down the street. I wanted to see how much the lights cost. On the way I spotted a dime on the sidewalk. Joy! How lucky I was to have found 10 cents!
In the store, I stared longingly at the strings of outdoor lights. I knew I could not buy even the smallest set. Then I saw the single lights, and my hope rose. I got excited when discovering a single bulb cost only 20 cents.
Walking home, I was thinking how I might get another dime. Maybe if I helped my grandma gather evergreens, she would give me a few cents. As expected, Grandma asked for my help on the weekend. But I didn’t get a cent when we finished.
Several days later, Uncle Charlie dropped in, and gave each child a dime. We jumped with delight. Just as soon as I could, I went back to the hardware store and bought a single colored bulb. Back home, I climbed the ladder and replaced the clear light with the colored one. After the sunset, I switched on the light and, unobserved, went outside to see the lovely colored light in the darkness.
When Daddy came home, he asked, “Who put the light on the front door?” “I did, Daddy!” I smiled up at him. “Doesn’t it look Christmassy?”
He bent down and, with tears in his eyes, took me gently in his arms. Our house was wearing some holiday spirit, and it looked beautiful.
24. The neighbor suggested that the author’s family ____ .
A. buy outdoor lights B. beautify the living room
C. decorate the yard D. lighten the street
25. Why did the author feel excited when he found the single bulbs in the store?
A. Because he was attracted by their lovely colors.
B. Because he believed he could get the money for one.
C. Because they were more beautiful than strings of lights.
D. Because they were so cheap that he could buy one immediately.
26. How did the author get another dime?
A. His grandma gave it to him as a reward.
B. He found it on the way home.
C. He earned it by taking a part-time job.
D. His uncle gave it to him as pocket money.
27. Why did the author’s father take him in his arms?
A. His father was affected by his merry feelings.
B. His father was moved by his caring behavior.
C. His father was touched that he had helped his grandma.
D. His father was proud that he had replaced the bulb by himself.

It’s 2035. You have a job, a family and you’re about 40 years old! Welcome to your future life.
Getting ready for work, you pause in front of the mirror.
“Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics(智能电子元件) are rear-ranged in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror you find it hard to believe you’re 40. You look much younger.
With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged! As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal into a bowl, you hear, “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that.” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code(电子源码)on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appears on the counter as the kitchen checks its food supplies.
“Ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. In 2005 only specially trained astronauts went into space and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacations. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel. “Thanks to medical advances, vaccination
shots(防疫针) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door.
It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office. Autopilot!” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video films rather than read it.
28. What changes the color of your shirt?
A. The mirror. B. The medicine. C. The counter. D. The shirt itself.
29. How do the shoes know that you shouldn’t eat the breakfast cereal?

B. By checking the nutrition details of the food.
C. By testing the food supplies in the kitchen.
D. By listening to the doctor’s advice.

The San Diego Splash senior women’s basketball team plays three-on-three in 30-minute half-court games—looking at the score-board and it doesn’t take long to realize that there’s nothing “senior” about these athletes.
The Splash may be the oldest team under the San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association (players must be 80 or over to join), but its members play to win and have won two championships (冠军称号) at the National Senior Games. Nine women are on the record, including Meg Skinner and Grace Larson—both of whom are 91.
Born in the 1920s and 1930s, Larson and the rest of her teammates are making up for the lost time and missed chances. “I was 80 when I got my first basketball shoes, and I was excited,” Larson said. Players in the Splash didn’t just wake up on their 80th birthdays and decide to join the team, and many of them have been playing basketball for many years, both as players in the San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association and other organizations.
Since it’s medically proved that seniors’ sports can lead to a longer and livelier life, it comes as no surprise that many Splash players have lived longer. “A lot of my childhood friends thought I was crazy to play basketball at 66,” explained 87-year-old Marge Carl. “They thought I’ll break an arm or a leg, but I’m the only one surviving of my childhood friends. They’re all gone, every one of them.”
“Seniors have to join us,” Carl told a San Diego newspaper. “They can’t sit in a room watching TV. That’s a death warning.” With over 6 million views, the videos about the Splash are very popular. “A friendship, a sisterhood, a family” is how Larson describes her team—“It’s the nicest group of people from all walks of life.”
32. What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph mean?
A. The athletes are not as experienced as they look.
B. The athletes can’t wait to have another game.
C. The athletes play as well as young players.
D. The athletes are actually very young.
33. What do we know about the Splash?
A. It is the oldest team in the world.
B. It has won two games in the finals.
C. The players must be less than 80.
D. Members don’t have basketball experience.
34. What will probably happen if senior people play basketball?
A. They will live a healthier life.
B. They will be very excited every day.
C. They are sure to break arms and legs.
D. They will live longer than anyone else.
35. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Age is just a number
B. Everyone should do more exercise
C. Playing basketball makes us healthy
D. Old people should be taken good care of
