To make things worse, everyone is fighting against you. Can you survive? ‎ This is what 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen faces in the book The Hunger Games by American author Suzanne Collins. The novel has been on the USA Today’s Best-Selling Books list for two years since it was first released (出版) in 2008. ‎ The novel takes place in an imagined time. The US no longer exists. North America has become Panem, and its biggest city is called the Capitol. The rest of Panem is divided into 12 districts. ‎ Long ago, the districts started a war against the Capitol and lost. They gave up and had to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to appear in a yearly TV show called The Hunger Games. ‎ The teenagers have to fight each other in a desolate (荒凉的) environment. The rules and audience may change, but one rule always stays the same: kill or be killed. ‎ Katniss lives with her mother and younger sister in District 12, the poorest district of Panem. She tries to support her family by secretly hunting beyond the border of her district. ‎ When Katniss’ sister is chosen to appear in the show, Katniss steps up to take her sister’s place. However, her friendship with the other District 12 contestant (选手), a baker’s son named Peeta Mellark, makes her situation even more complicated. In order to survive, she must choose which is more important: her own survival or humanity; life or love. ‎ The twists and turns of her adventure make it hard to put the book down. You can feel Katniss’ pain, confusion and love. This is how a novel should be: you don’t just read it – you live in it. ‎ 27. The purpose of writing this article is mainly to . ‎ A. give us an example of how to survive in the wild ‎ B. introduce to us a USA Today’s best-seller ‎ C. teach us how to win The Hunger Games ‎ D. tell us what might happen in the future North America ‎ 28. Which is TRUE according to the text? ‎ A. The Hunger Games is a televised competition held every two years. ‎ B. Katniss takes her sister’s place to compete because she loves adventures. ‎ C. The new country Panem is divided into 12 parts altogether. ‎ D. The young competitors in The Hunger Games are forced to kill or be killed. ‎ 29. The underlined word “complicated” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to . A. difficult B. hopeless C. advantageous D. impossible ‎ 30. In The Hunger Games, Katniss faces more challenges because she has to think about . ‎ A. who can support her family instead of her ‎ A. what is the most important in life ‎ B. how she can defeat her opponent ‎ C. why she has to compete in such a violent game D ‎ Tempted by a chocolate bar? Maybe indulging (沉迷于) every so often is not a bad thing especially if it’s dark chocolate. ‎ According to a Swedish study in the journal of the American College of Cardiology that looked at more than 33,000 women, the more chocolate the women said they ate, the lower their risk of stroke. ‎ The results add to a growing body of evidence linking cocoa consumption to heart health, but they aren’t a free pass to overeat chocolate. ‎ ‎ “Given the observational design of the study, findings of this study cannot prove that it’s chocolate that lowers the risk of stroke,” said Susanna Larsson from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, in an email to Reuters Health. ‎ While she believes chocolate has health benefits, she also warned that eating too much of it could be having the opposite of the desired effect. ‎ ‎“Chocolate should be consumed within reasonable limits as it is high in calories, fat and sugar. As dark chocolate contains more cocoa and less sugar than milk chocolate, consumption of dark chocolate would be more beneficial.” ‎ Larsson and her colleagues tapped into data from a mammography study that included self-reports of how much chocolate women ate in 1997. The women ranged in age from 49 to 83 years. ‎ Over the next decade, there were 1,549 strokes among the group. The more chocolate women ate, the lower their risk. ‎ ‎ Among those with the highest weekly chocolate intake, more than 45 grams, there were 2.5 strokes per 1,000 women per year. That figure was 7.8 per 1,000 among women who ate the least, less than 8.9 grams a week. ‎ Scientists speculate (推测) that substances known as flavonoids may be responsible for chocolate’s apparent impact on health. ‎ According to Larsson, flavonoids have been shown to cut high blood pressure, a risk factor for strokes, and improve other factors linked to heart health. Whether that theoretical benefit translates to real-life benefits remains to be proven by strict studies, however. ‎ Nearly 800,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke every year, with about a sixth of them dying of it and many more left disabled. ‎ For those at high risk, doctors recommend blood pressure medicine, quitting smoking, exercising more and eating a healthier diet, but so far, chocolate isn’t on the list. 31. The researchers who study chocolate lovers with fewer strokes are from . ‎ ‎ A. America B. Sweden C. Britain D. Spain ‎ 32. Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the passage? ‎ A. The more chocolate the women eat, the lower they may have their risk of stroke. ‎ B. Results of this study cannot prove chocolate can lower the risk of stroke. ‎ C. The more chocolate you eat, the healthier you are. ‎ D. Eating too much chocolate could be bad for health. ‎ 33. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “intake” in Paragraph 9? ‎ A. consumption B. input C. income D. effect ‎ 34. What can we infer from the last paragraph? ‎ A. Whether eating chocolate can lower the risk of stroke has been solved. ‎ B. There are many people in the United States suffering a stroke every year. ‎ C. Doing more exercise is beneficial to health. ‎ D. Whether eating chocolate can lower the risk of stroke remains to be studied. ‎ 35. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. A study about stroke. ‎ B. Chocolate lover may have fewer strokes. ‎ C. A study about the benefit of chocolate. ‎ D. Eating more dark chocolate does good to health. ‎ 第二节 (共 5 题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 ‎ When you hear the word “recycling”, what comes to your mind? 36 ‎ What if I were to tell you there is a dark side of recycling? A type of recycling that does more harm than good. The dark side of recycling has nothing to do with the environment but rather has a lot to do with the recycling of ideas. ‎ Environmental unrest isn’t the only trouble we must face. 37 ‎ Think about it. When was the last time you read an original blog post? I’m guessing it has been quite a while. Why do you think top bloggers (博主) of today win so much respect? 38 With each recycled idea the online world becomes much more polluted. Used content contributes to the ever-increasing mass of digital smog. ‎ ‎39 When you stop recycling, you will then be forced to take up the task of creating from your own ideas. When you recycle an excellent idea, it soon becomes good. When you recycle a good idea, it soon becomes just OK. The chain continues until the key part of what used to make the idea good is saturated (饱和), leaving you nothing but a pile of mess. ‎ In order not to pollute, your ideas must go beyond “just recycled”. 40 For your voice and talent to be heard and seen, you must go far beyond the standard copy of your neighbors’ ideas. ‎ A. Let your ideas develop and flow. ‎ B. Your ideas must stand out from the pollution of the web. ‎ C. The web environment is becoming worse and worse. ‎ D. Idea pollution is quickly becoming widespread across the online world. ‎ E. The first step to reduce pollution is simple: stop recycling. ‎ F. Do you think they recycle their ideas? G. The color green or global warming? ‎ Back in the fifteenth century in Nuremberg lived a family with eighteen children. When I am busy and can’t go, he feels very angry with me. And then Jim, he always asks me to tell lies to the teachers whenever he makes mistakes. ‎ ‎ In my opinion, a person without friends can never be happy. Our life is full of joys and sorrows which we need people to share with. Faced with difficulties, we need friends to give us comfort and help. Just as a proverb goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”‎ ‎ If you do want to be my friends, there are two important things to remember. Firstly, always be honest. Tell the truth whatever happens. Secondly, be helpful. Always be willing to help.‎ Where there’s a will, there’s a way A proverb is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of humans. Let me tell you one of my experience.‎ ‎ A few weeks ago, my father took me to climb Mount Tai. Although I was sweating all over and became very tired, I was still struggling on the steep mountainside, because I knew that I would see the sunrise the next morning.‎ ‎ The experience reminds me of our studies. Although there are many “steps” ahead of us, there is still hope like the sunrise in our hearts. So long as we hold fast to our ideals and never give up, we are bound to achieve success. As a proverb goes, “Where is a will, there is a way.” Our efforts will pay off in time.‎ 听力原文 Text 1‎ M: Did Henry paint the whole house himself?‎ W: He doesn’t like climbing ladders, so he asked somebody for help.‎ Text 2‎ W: Excuse me, sir. All the passengers need to turn off their electronic products for taking off. Please turn off your laptop.‎ M: OK. I will.‎ Text 3‎ W: Oh, no! The shop’s closed for lunch from twelve to one. Excuse me, what’s the time now, please?‎ M: It’s a quarter past twelve.‎ Text 4‎ M: This is Housekeeping. May I help you?‎ W: Yes, this is room 804. I can’t find my coat. I was wondering whether it’s in the lost and found.‎ M: I can check it for you. What does your coat look like?‎ Text 5‎ M: Was the exam very difficult?‎ W: It was worse than difficult — it was absolutely impossible.‎ Text 6‎ W: Remember to keep your phone with you today — in your pocket, because I’ll need to call you to let you know who’s going to pick you up from school — me or Dad.‎ M: I wasn’t going to take it with me today — I’ve left it up next to my bed.‎ W: Why? The idea is that you keep it with you so we can get in touch if we need to.‎ M: I know, but my classmate Sally had her phone stolen from her bag last week and I don’t want to lose mine.‎ Text 7‎ M: Onions, onions…there is onion in everything tonight.‎ W: It helps me lose weight and it’s good for my heart.‎ M: Even so, you don’t need to put it in all three dishes.‎ W: I need to eat as many onions as I can. I wanna get slim as quickly as possible.‎ M: Look, we eat onions at every meal. It’s too much for you and for me. How about we go for something different tonight, like steak?‎ W: No. Pizza is as far as I can go.‎ M: Pizza it is. Let’s go.‎ Text 8‎ W: Frank, do you hear that strange noise?‎ M: Yes, I have noticed it for a while. It seems to be coming from the motor.‎ W: What shall we do?‎ M: I don’t know. Perhaps if we slow it down we can stop at next park place and check what is the matter.‎ W: OK. Let’s do it.‎ M: Oh, it is burning hot. We have run out of the water.‎ W: How is the motor itself? Is it OK?‎ M: I think it’s all right. Let’s wait till it cools down a bit.‎ Text 9‎ M: Hi, Sara.‎ W: Hey, Jimmy. What’s up? I never thought you’d be home on a Saturday night!‎ M: I’m just calling to tell you that I won’t be able to make it to your party tomorrow. My dog died today.‎ W: Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that! What happened?‎ M: I’m not exactly sure. I came home from work tonight and she wasn’t moving. I took her to the hospital and they said her heart had stopped.‎ W: That’s awful. Don’t worry about coming to the party. I completely understand.‎ M: Thanks. She was 15 years old, so at least she had a good, long life. I think she simply died of old age. I just need a few days to myself, but I should be feeling back to normal pretty soon.‎ W: Of course. If there’s anything you need, just give me a call. Jurong Bird Park is one of the most famous places to view birds. The birds live in areas within the park that are just like their natural environments. Located at the west end of Singapore, the park has a lot of room for visitors to walk around. This way, guests have a good opportunity to see the birds. In one area of the park, there is a 30-meter-high waterfall and over 100 types of plants. Visitors can enjoy getting close to the birds during several different daily feeding time and shows. One, called Breakfast with the Birds, runs from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Another is the All Stars Bird Show. It happens in the evening, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.‎
