“You bring your uncle to my talk tonight,” said Mark Twain. “I'm sure I can make him laugh.”
That evening the young man and his uncle sat in the first row. Mark Twain spoke directly at the old man. He told some rather interesting stories, which made everyone in the hall laugh. But the old man never even smiled. Mark Twain told the most interesting stories he knew. But the old man's face was still a blank. At last Mark Twain stopped. He felt tired and discouraged.

Your house may have an effect on your figure . Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places – and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock – or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to
eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
27. The text is especially helpful for those who care about _ _.
A.their home comforts B. their body shape
C. house buying D. healthy diets
28. A home environment in blue can help people ____.
A. digest food better B. reduce food intake
C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites
29. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A. Eat quickly B. Play fast music
C. Use smaller spoons D. Turn down the lights
30.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Your House Making You Fat? B. Ways of Serving Dinner
C. Effects of Self-Consciousness
D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?
第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to take notes
Every student knows the importance of taking notes in class. 31 Adults (成年人) need to take notes in meetings or training courses for work. So here are some ways to help you develop this important skill.
♦ Begin with the date and the topic of the class. This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget. 32
♦ Focus on the most important points. Trying to write down everything the speaker says will only make you angry. 33
♦ If the speaker uses a PowerPoint, you may not need to copy the slides. Ask if the PowerPoint will be available afterward. If so, you can focus on writing the things the speaker says instead. Or you can take a picture with a phone. 34 If so, print it out so you can write notes on it.
♦ 35 This will give you the chance to add any information that you didn’t write down. It’s best to do this as soon as possible, so that you don’t forget anything. This review will also increase your chances of remembering what you wrote.
Note-taking is a useful skill, so it’s important to practice doing it well.
A. Also, the PowerPoint may be available before the class or meeting.
B. Look over your notes again after taking them.
C. It will help you keep your notes organized.
D. Try your best to write down what you want to remember.
E. But the skill of note-taking isn’t only used in school.
F. Consider different note-taking skills.
G. Instead, listen for the key ideas the person wants to communicate.

书面表达
Dear Jim,
I am glad to receive your letter. Learning that you want to know how to keep fit, I'm writing to share my advice with you. Here is my advice.
Firstly, it's of great benefit to keep a balanced eating diet. For example, you should eat more fruit and more vegetables which are rich in fibre and vitamins. However, it isn't good to eat food which contains too much fat and sugar, because it can make you put on weight easily. Secondly, you'd better go to bed early, get up early, exercise regularly and have enough sleep to make you energetic for your studies. Lastly, you're advised to keep a positive attitude towards life, which is very important.
In a word, I sincerely hope that my advice can be of some help to you and that you can live a happy and healthy life. Looking forward to your early reply.
Best wishes !
Yours,
Li Hua

(W) Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809.He was President of the United States from 1861 until he died in 1865.
Lincoln was 193 cm tall.He was too tall to fit in most beds. When he was president, people from his hometown gave him a special bed. The length of the bed was 82 cm longer than Lincoln's height. It was enough for
him.
All his life, Lincoln liked to laugh. He liked to make other people laugh too.Once Lincoln was talking about some people, he asked,“How many legs does a sheep have?” “Four,” they answered.“ Right,” Lincoln said.“Now how many legs does a sheep have if we call the tail a leg?”“Five,”they answered.“Wrong.” Lincoln said, “It still has four legs, because calling the tail a leg doesn't make it one.”
Many people thought Abraham Lincoln was very ugly.Right before he became President, an eleven-year-old girl wrote him a Letter. She said that she wanted him to grow a beard.Lincoln thought about this and decided that it was a good idea. That's why in most pictures of Lincoln he has a short beard.
