Waterpebble: Saving water one drop at a time
Waterpebble is a harmless and trendy Eco-gadget designed to help raise awareness regarding how much water is being used while in the shower, and to help decrease that amount so gradually that it’s practically undetectable. The goal is to make saving water fun and easy while bringing its importance to the forefront.
Inventor:
Paul Priestman is the innovative mind behind Waterpebble and was originally inspired by a hotel bathroom sign that read, “Please Use Water Sparingly(俭省地).”
Usage:
The Waterpebble is a small round device that has three light indications of red, orange and green. They indicate, respectively, “Too much”, “Just enough” and “Well done — you’re saving the planet” .Simply place Waterpebble in the bottom of the shower and it records the length of your showers. From that point on it starts gradually encouraging you to reduce your shower time by flashing the appropriate light. If you let it go all the way to red, then you have exceeded(超过) the amount of time of your shower. If you stop showering at green, you have kept your shower at six minutes or less and have beat your record.
Effects:
Families who use Waterpebble can look forward to low water fees on their future water bills. It is a clever and environmentally-friendly way to make the process of saving water more instinctive. Waterpebble is not only encouraging people to use less water, but also helping people to become educated about conservation. Families
report that their kids love the idea of playing a role in protecting the planet and without being constantly reminded. Waterpebble is being praised as a constructive device that allows people to ease into water conservation in a way that is enjoyable and educational.

A. was initially used in a hotel bathroom
B. gets users to save water unconsciously
C. helps users predict the exact price they will pay for water
D. aims to warn users of the lack of water resource on our planet
57. When using Waterpebble, you ______.
A. should stop showering when its light turns orange
B. need put it beside the shower before showering
C. should pay attention to its light indication
D. have to control your shower time at less than 6 minutes

The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist’s dream, years away from materializing in the real world. Well, the future is apparently now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April forcompanies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services. California isn’t leading the way here. Companies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country. It’s hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated.
While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars (and rightfully so), policymakers also should be talking about how self-driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared.
Do we want to copy—or even worsen—the traffic of today with driverless cars? Imagine a future where most adults own individual self-driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking. Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport—an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing (叫车) services.
A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol-powered private cars worldwide with electric, self-driving and shared systems could reduce carbon emissions from transportation 80% and cut the cost of transportation infrastructure and operations 40% by 2050. Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride-hailing services, considering the cost of self-driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues. But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people become comfortable with the technology.
Policymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless vehicles doesn’t extend the worst aspects of the car-controlled transportation system we have today. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.
58. According to the author, attention should be paid to how driverless cars can ______.
A. make some people lose jobs B. help deal with transportation-related problems
C. cause damage to our environment D. provide better services to customers
59. As for driverless cars, what is the author’s major concern?
A. Safety. B. Affordability. C. Management. D. Side effects.
60. What is the author’s attitude to the future of self-driving cars?
A. Doubtful. B. Sympathetic. C. Disapproving. D. Positive.

Dear Seth,
You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell you in this letter. But I've been thinking a lot about the life that you have ahead of you, about my life so far as I reflect on what I've learned, and about my role as a dad in trying to prepare you for the trials that you will face in the coming years.
You are young, and life has not yet to show a cold face to you, to throw disappointments and loneliness and pain into your path. You have not been worn down yet by long hours of thankless work by the slings and arrows of everyday life.
For this, be thankful. You are at a wonderful time of life. You have many wonderful stages of life still to come, but they are not without their costs and risks.
I hope to help you along your path by sharing some of the best of what I’ve learned. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt. What works for me might not work for you.
Life can be cruel
There will be people in your life who won't be very nice. They’ll tease you because you’re different, or for no good reason. They might try to bully you or hurt you.
There’s not much you can do about these people except to learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you, who actually care about you, who make you feel good about yourself. When you find friends like this, hold on to them, treasure them, spend time with them, be kind to them, and love them
There will be times when you are met with disappointment instead of success. Life won’t always turn out the way you want. This is just another thing you’ll have to learn to deal with. But instead of letting these things get you down, push on. Accept disappointment and learn to persevere, to pursue your dreams despite pitfalls. Learn to turn negatives into positives, and you’ll do much better in life.
You will also face heartbreak and abandonment by those you love. I hope you don’t have to face this too much, but happens. Again, not much you can do but to heal, and to move on with your life. Let these pains become stepping stones to better things in life, and learn to use them to make you stronger.
But be open to life anyway
Yes, you’ll find cruelty and suffering in your journey through life...but don’t let that close you to new things. Don’t retreat from life, don’t hide or wall yourself off. Be open to new things, new experiences, new people.
You might get your heart broken 10 times, but find the most wonderful woman the 11th time. If you shut yourself off from love, you'll miss out on that woman, and the happiest times of your life.
You might get teased and bullied and hurt by people you meet … and then after meeting dozens of jerks, find a true friend. If you close yourself off to new people, and don't open your heart to them, you'll avoid pain … but also lose out on meeting some incredible people, who will be there during the toughest times of your life and create some of the best times of your life.
You will fail many times but if you allow that to stop you from trying, you will miss out on the amazing feeling of success once you reach new heights with your accomplishments. Failure is a stepping stone to success.
Life isn’t a competition
You will meet many people who will try to do better than you, in school ,in college and at work .They’ll try to have nicer cars, bigger houses, nicer clothes, cooler gadgets. To them, life is a competition--they have to do better than their peers to be happy.
Here’s a secret: Life isn’t a competition. If you spend that journey always trying to impress others, to outdo others, you’re wasting your journey. Instead, learn to enjoy the journey. Make it a journey of happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love.
Don't worry about having a nicer car or house or anything material, or even a better-paying job. None of that matters, and none of it will make you happier. You'll acquire these things and then only want more. Instead, learn to be satisfied with having enough-and then use the time you would have wasted trying to earn money to buy those things … use that time doing things you love.
Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are starting out on a weird, scary, daunting, but ultimately incredibly wonderful journey, and I will be there for you when I can. Godspeed.

Tai Chi is the ancient Chinese practice that promotes the whole body’s harmonized movements. Previous research has shown that Tai Chi is a kind of effective exercise to improve balance control of older individuals. This suggests that the practice might help protect against falls which are a primary cause of the traumatic(外伤的) death of older adults.
The slow and gentle movements of Tai Chi hold promise as an alternative exercise choice for patients who reject traditional cardiac rehabilitation(心脏康复), according to research in Journal of the American Heart Association, the open- access journal of the American Heart Association Stroke Association.
After a heart attack, more than 60% of patients refuse participation in cardiac rehabilitation. Although the reasons include financial worries and the distance to a rehab center, many patients stay away because they consider physical exercise as unpleasant, painful or impossible given their current physical condition. This is the first study suggesting that Tai Chi may improve exercise behavior in this high- risk population.
We think that Tai Chi may be a good choice for these people because they can start very slowly and simply and, as their confidence increases, the pace and movements can be modified to increase intensity(强度), said Elena Salmoirago-Blotcher, M.D., Ph.D., ./lead author of the study and assistant professor. “Tai Chi exercise can reach low-to-moderate(低到中等的) intensity level. The emphasis on breathing and relaxation can also help with stress reduction and mental sufferings.”
Researchers conducted a study at the hospital which included 29 physically inactive heart disease patients(8 women and 21men, with an average age of 67.9) who expressed an interest in the Tai Chi program. They compared two groups: LITE, a shorter program with 24 classes over 12 weeks and PLUS, a longer program with 52 classes over 24 weeks. All participants received a DVD for home practice during and after receiving the class. Although the majority had experienced a previous heart attack, all had rejected cardiac rehabilitation and continued to have many high risk characteristics, including smoking (27.6%), diabetes (48.3%), and overweight (35%) and so on.
Researchers found Tai Chi was safe, with no harmful effects related to the exercise program except for slight muscular pain at the beginning of training. Participants liked it and were willing to recommend it to a friend. What's more, the weekly amount of moderate to high-intensity physical activities was raised in the group participating in the longer program after 3-6 months’ training, but not in those who took part in the shorter program. Besides, the training did not raise aerobic fitness(有氧适能) of participants in either group on standard tests after three months’ training.
“Tai Chi on its own wouldn't probably replace other components of traditional cardiac rehabilitation, such as education about risk factors, diet and obedience to needed medicine,” said Salmoirago-Blotcher. “ If proven effective in larger studies, it might be possible to offer it as an exercise choice within a rehab center as a bridge to more vigorous exercise.”
66. What's the main reason that most patients reject exercise after a heart attack?
A. Their financial burden is too heavy
B. They can't find a proper form of exercise
C. They think a fitness center is too far away
D. They believe exercise isn't suitable for them
67.Why is Tai Chi considered good for patients with heart disease?
A. It can protect people from force
B. Its speed and strength are adjustable
C. It improves people's balance control
D. It has the same effect as cardiac rehabilitation
68. What can we learn from the study?
A. Doing Tai Chi was not good for participants’s muscles
B. The training had a negative influence on participants aerobic fitness
C. Many participants had other severe health problems besides heart disease
D. Participants took more high intensity exercise after receiving teaching training
69.What does the underlined word in the last paragraph most probably mean
A energetic B. physical C. healthy D. scientific
70. Elena Salmoirago-Blotcher thinks Tai Chi________.
A. is less effective than cardiac rehabilitation
B. can provide psychological benefits for people
C. conflicts with cardiac rehabilitation to some degree
D .will function better if assisted by the needed medicine

Intense physical exercise is not the only way to better health. Studies show that walking several times a week can lower the risk of many diseases. They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, bone loss, arthritis (关节炎), and depression. Walking also can help you lose weight.
Fast walking is good for the heart. It lowers the blood pressure. It raises the amount of good cholesterol (胆固醇) in the blood. Researchers say walking can sharply reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack.
Studies have also shown that walking for 30 minutes a day can delay and possibly prevent the development of diabetes. People who are overweight have an especially high risk to develop this disease.
Walking strengthens the muscles and builds up the bones that they are attached to. Studies show that walking could decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis (骨质疏松症). Walking can also help ease the pain of arthritis in areas where bones are joined. This is because walking strengthens the muscles around the bones.
Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for people who are starting an exercise program for the first time and for older people.
A walking program is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and good shoes. There are shoes that are designed especially for lots of walking.
How fast should you walk? For the best effect, doctors say you should walk fast enough to cause you to breathe hard. Yet you should still be able to talk. Let your arms move freely while you walk.
There are no rules to starting a walking program. You might walk short distances. Or you might walk up hills to strengthen your leg muscles. Health experts say you can gain the most from a walking program if you walk at about five kilometers an hour for 30 minutes a day. You should do this about five times a week.

A private school located in Shanghai provided low-quality food for students, raising the concern of administrative departments. They conducted an investigation and demanded food criteria among schools be enforced.
Campus food safety is of vital importance to students. On the one hand, safe food is beneficial to students’ healthy growth, which lays a solid foundation for their sustainable development. On the other hand, if they were offered low-quality food, they couldn’t keep fit on campus, making their parents worried a lot and compromising their academic performances.
Ensuring students having access to safe food is a top priority. To begin with, the government should make stricter rules. Besides, the school leaders should attach importance to the issue. What’s more, schools are supposed to invite parents and students to supervise school canteens regularly. Only when we join forces can campus food safety be guaranteed.
In conclusion, we can’t emphasize the importance of campus food safety too much.

M: Yes, I told you yesterday, Tracy.
W: Oh, did you? Sorry, I must have forgotten.
(Text 2)
W: What’s the hurry? We’d like you to stay for dinner.
M: Well, thank you, but Helen and I have to meet my parents at the railway station.
(Text 3)
W: Hi, Tom, we had to start the meeting without you.
M: I know, my flight was delayed because of the heavy rain.
W: But you are just in time for the discussion.

M: How much are these shoes?
W: Oh, they are 35 dollars a pair.
M: Do you have size 9?
W: I’m afraid they are sold out.
(Text 5)
M: Hi, I’m thinking of taking a trip during the Christmas holidays.
W: Where would you like to go?
M: Well, maybe somewhere warm and sunny.
W: How about a tour to Southeast Asia?
(Text 6)
M: I’d like to book a few seats for Hamlet, please. Have you got any seats downstairs?
W: Yes, we have.
M: How much are they?
W: $3.75 each.
M: Are there any seats for $2.50?
W: Yes, there are—upstairs. How many?
M: Four, please.

W: I can give you four seats in Row 8.
M: How long will the performance last?
W: Two and a half hours.
M: Thank you.

W: Good evening, sir. I’m the Assistant Manager.
M: How nice!
W: Yes. I’m afraid we’ve had a complaint from your neighbor about the noise. He is trying to get some sleep as he has an early start tomorrow for an important meeting. I’m sure you understand.
M: Oh, I see.
W: Do you think it might be possible to ask your friends to be a little quieter? We do like to give our guests a chance of getting a good night’s sleep. It’s well after eleven.
M: Oh. I’m sorry. I do apologize. I suppose we were talking rather loudly. It’s just that we’ve reached an important agreement. We were having a bit of a celebration.
W: I’m pleased to hear it. Shall I ask Room Service to bring you some coffee?
M: No, that won’t be necessary. We were just about to pack up anyway.
W: Thank you, sir, and good night to you.

M: Mr. Huang, I’m going to teach in Ola very soon, perhaps next month.
W: Congratulations, Miss Lan! You should be happy. You see, Ola is a big city; there are a lot of interesting things to see.
M: Yes, that’s why I’ve come to you. I have mixed feelings, you see. I’m excited but I’m also a bit worried.
W: What bothers you?
M: You see it’s this: someone told me that people from Ola look down upon people from other places. Is that true?
W: Oh, yes. Some people do. I hate this kind of attitude. I’m sure not everyone in Ola is like that. Do you look down upon others in the class?
M: Of course not! I often help them. And I’ve learned a lot from the people coming from other places. They are all hard-working. Most of them are talented.
W: Anyway, you will start a new life in a beautiful city.
M: Yes. I feel excited. I’ll write e-mails to you when I settle down.
W: Thank you. Then good-bye and good luck!
(Text 9)
M: Hi, Jim. Why did it take you so long to answer the phone? Were you playing computer games as usual?
W: Not this time. I was taking a shower.
M: I called you yesterday, but you didn’t answer the phone.
W: Sorry, I was out shopping yesterday and left my phone at home. I saw that you had called when I got back and I tried to call you back, so your phone was off.
M: Yeah, I went to a concert, so I turned my phone off.
W: So what’s up?
M: I wanted to invite you to my sister’s wedding next Saturday. Would you like to be my guest?
W: Sure. I bought a present for her yesterday next Saturday. Would you like to be my guest?
M: Sure. The wedding begins at 2:00 pm. I’ll come and pick you up forty minutes before that.
W: Could you come twenty minutes earlier than that? Megan is going to the wedding, too, and she needs a lift.
M: No problem. See you next Saturday.

W: I’m Alexandra Grace, Educator at New Zealand Embassy Beijing. Today I will give you a brief introduction of New Zealand’s higher education. Small as it may be, New Zealand offers quality higher education opportunities, with two thirds of its higher education institutes within the top 10 of QS World University Rankings 2014.What makes New Zealand’s universities stand out is their abilities to provide high-end education.
Though Chinese students form the largest international student group in New Zealand, the country only ranks the 7th on Chinese students’ most desirable overseas destination list. The size of the country prevents it becoming a hot study destination. But it draws students with its safe and multi-cultural environment.
While it attracts mainly wealthy students, higher education in New Zealand is also affordable for many
common Chinese families. Chinese students can get a British-based education with the school fee being some of the lowest in the world. On average, the school fee was about 25,000 dollars per year, and the living costs were about 20,000 dollars a year. Besides, students can do some part-time jobs. The money earned in those jobs is enough for them to travel around the country and enjoy its breath-taking scenery.
