Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
In American countryside, the message we hear is this:Go and get an education.Leave your small town and make something of yourself.Success and opportunity are found elsewhere.
After graduating from a high school in Helena,Arkansas,I did go.
I went to Colby College in Maine.I had visited the school ahead of time,so I knew what I was getting myself into.I knew about the difference in weather.I understood the difference in social atmosphere. But I wanted to stretch myself and get out of my comfort zone. And you know what? I absolutely loved my time there. But one thing took me by surprise—the lack of countryside representation. Most of the other students at Colby were from big cities:New York,Boston,Los Angeles,San Francisco...And when I had conversations with these students—in or outside of class—we almost always focused on topics facing large American cities. In my education classes,it was always“urban this”and“urban that”.
It was like small town America didn't exist.
And this urban interest doesn't just happen in college.I went to an education conference a couple of years ago,and a professor— someone who had been at the forefront of educational reform—was there to deliver a keynote.I was chosen to be part of a small group that got to meet with him.So there we were, five or six of us sitting in a room, and I asked him,“What are your thoughts on the state of education in the
countryside?”And this man was speechless.
I'll never forget that moment. It speaks to a larger truth.Towns like mine are forgotten.
This trend of exporting talent and resources to our big cities—this mindset of leaving small towns and never coming back—I don't want to add to that movement.I want to reverse that movement.
Now it's my turn to help people younger than me.And you know what?I'm a sixth grade teacher in Helena now.
1.What do people in American countryside think of the future of the youth at home?
A.Secure. B.Fragile.

2.How would the author feel about the professor's reaction?
A.It's emotional. B.It's natural.

A.Teaching in a college.
B.Fighting for the movement.
C.Working with the professor.
D.Devoting himself to his hometown.

It is 7 am on a gray Thursday, and I am on the telephone to a group of strangers struggling with excited laughter. There must be 20 of them—men and women, young and old—laughing. These people have never met,nor do they know each other's names.Yet for 40 minutes, five mornings a week, they simply pick up the phone and laugh.
This is the“laughter line”,part of the growing industry in laughter treatment,Britain's latest and most unusual treatment. The simple act of laughing is increasingly being used as a method for dealing with mental and physical disorders.Since it was founded in 2004,the UK Laughter Network has increased ten times, training 8,
000 people to use laughter to improve their health.
So how does it work? It reduces stress.A Maryland study found that laughing expands the inner lining of our blood vessels(血管)and so improves circulation,“Your immune system is strengthened by up to 40 percent,” explains laughter therapist Julie Whitehead, whose work includes training those who work at Great Ormond Street Hospital.Laughter has also been shown to lower blood pressure and improve mental function.
But Lotte Mikkelsen,45,a laughter therapist, warns that it's important to see it as a method of treatment—not a cure.“In 2008,I was diagnosed (诊断)with an incurable disease,”she explains.“My sister died at the age of 32 from it,so I know what could happen.Since I started laughing,I haven't had any worsening and my health is great.I'd never say laughter is a cure—but it can help.”
4.How does the UK Laughter Network help people?
A.By involving them in effective communication.
B.By inspiring them to realize their dreams.
C.By providing them with free medicine.
D.By training them to use laughter.
5.What can we learn from Lotte Mikkelsen's words in the last paragraph?
A.She believes laughter is helpful for her condition.
B.She thinks of laughter as a cure for her disease.
C.She has recovered from her illness.
D.She regrets not teaching her sister laughter treatment.
6.What is the best title for the text?
A.Laughter Makes You More Popular
B.Why Do People Seldom Laugh in Life?
C.Laughter Is the Best Medicine
D.How Did a Laughter Line Come into Being?
