Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is essential to one’s life. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip.
But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. So in spite of all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33%—from 8.8 million to 11.7 million—according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of America.
For those who dislike eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years have shown that, for grown-ups especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting (省略) breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect work,” said Arnold E. Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve work.”
Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better work is surprisingly not enough, and most of the recent work concerns children, not grown-ups. “The literature,” says one researcher, Dr. Earnest Polite at the University of Texas, “is poor.”
24. The main idea of the passage is that _______.
A. breakfast has nothing to do with people’s health
B. a good breakfast used to be important to us
C. breakfast is not as important to us as gasoline to a car
D. breakfast is not as important as we thought before
25. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that _______.
A. several studies have been done in the past few years
B. the omission of breakfast has little effect on one’s work grown-ups have especially made studies in this field
D. eating little in the morning is good for health
26. The underlined word "literature" in the last sentence refers to _______.
A. stories, poems, play, etc B. written works on a particular subject
C. newspaper articles D. the modern literature of America
27. What is implied but not stated by the author is that _______.
A. breakfast does not affect work
B. Dr. Polite works at the University of Texas
C. not eating breakfast might affect the health of children
D. Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in London
C
On a number of drives throughout my childhood, my mother would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle from tragedy while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.
Though Mother’s Day follows Earth Day, for me, they have always been related to each other. My mom has been “green” since she became concerned about the environment. Like her mother and her grandmother before her, mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and reuses her plastic bags.
Mom creates a kind of harmonious relationship with wildlife in her yard. She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to avoid the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it is likely that they will be knocked down by a family of raccoons. Spiders that make their way into the house and are caught in juice glasses will be set loose in the garden.
I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for dandelions (蒲公英) to fly in the wind; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn’t need to lecture. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came mercy and an instinct for protection.
I am slowing down and it isn’t because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet, it is out of my concern for the planet itself. I’ve begun to save glass jars and reuse packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other in the trees above my
house.
Last summer, in the company of my son and daughter, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I ate the first while sitting on my low wall with dirt on my hands. Warm from the sun, it burst on my tongue with a sweetness I immediately wanted to share with my mom.
28. Why does the author say Earth Day is connected with Mother’s Day?
A. Because Mother’s Day falls shortly after Earth Day.
B. To stress that all the older women in her family are environmentalists.
C. To stress how much her mother cares about the environment.
D. Because her mother shows her how to be friendly to nature on Mother’s Day.
29. We can infer from the article that ______.
A. the author realizes that she should teach her children by example as well
B. the author’s mother knows how to get rid of the wildlife in her yard
C. the author believes that only by learning to slow down can we enjoy life
D. the author’s mother used to lecture her to protect the environment
30. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. The author is proud of her sweet tomatoes.
B. The author likes eating tomatoes planted by herself.
C. Planting tomatoes is a way of protecting environment.
D. The author really appreciates her mother’s teaching.
31. The writer’s attitude towards her mom’s behavior changed in the order of ______.
A. understanding — critical — supportive
B. supportive — doubtful — negative
C. negative — understanding — supportive
D. doubtful — critical — positive
D
Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, “In our
country today, the greatest danger to the lives of children and teenagers is not disease or starvation, but the terrible reality of violence”. So why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems or drive cars?
First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report shows that most violence between students begin with a small insult(侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.
Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict management: stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words or name-calling only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words can put out the fire before it is out of control.
After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict management: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Then the two people should change roles.
Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what’s wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real problem is and what both sides are trying to achieve. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the real problem becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller.
There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. Learning to manage conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict management is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.
32. This article is mainly about _____.
A. the lives of school children B.
the cause of arguments in schools
C. how to deal with school conflicts D. how to avoid youth conflicts
33. From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ______.
A.
violence is more likely to happen at lunchtime
B.
the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight
C.
students tend to lose their temper easily
D.
a small conflict can lead to violence
34. The underlined phrase “add fuel to the emotional fire” in paragraph 3 probably means _____.
A.
calm down two sides B.
help put out the fire
C.
cause physical violence D.
cause more anger between two sides
35. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ______.
A.
to complain about problems in school education
B.
to teach students different strategies for school life
C.
to call for teaching conflict management in schools
D.
to inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence

4 Study Habits You Should Be Practicing
With exams, essays, projects, and many deadlines for different things, effective(有效的)study habits are necessary. 36 If you are in need of a bit of an improvement, keep reading for the top four study habits that you should be practicing.
1. Make and use flashcards.
37 By using flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other, you will force your brain to recall he necessary information. Even if you struggle a bit with a card, you will still be actively revising the necessary material.
2. Revise, revise, revise!
Many students put off studying until just before the exam, with the more hardworking students giving themselves a week or two before a test. 38 It’s best to revise the information a little bit every day, so that you are not upset when a test comes around.
3. 39
One of the most effective—and the most fun—methods of studying is to watch related lectures
and videos in order to get more material. Watch documentaries or videos on YouTube and educational websites. You may be surprised at how much you can learn from videos, and just how much information is available online.
4. Re-write your notes.
Studies have shown that writing information out by hand increases your ability to remember the material. This makes the recall go hand-in-hand with muscle memory. 40
These are the four most effective study habits, and something all successful students do. Make sure you are on top of your game by following these study methods!
A. Watch related lectures and videos.
B. One method of revising is to make a mind-map.
C. Use these graded tests to create a new practice test.
D. Having these great study habits can make things easier.
E. However, it’s actually an ineffective method of preparing and studying.
F. Flashcards are designed to improve active memory recall of information.
G. You will be able to picture your written notes when you are taking the exam.

First of all,we can practice our spoken English because spoken English plays an important part in our English studies. Then we can also benefit a lot from communicating with each other. What’s more, as we are busy in studying and doing homework all day long, the club gives us chances to relax ourselves, which makes our school life happy and colorful.
So why not join us as soon as possible? Let’s do our best and make our club better and better!
