An 8-year-old Nigerian, Tani Adewumis, whose family is homeless, won first place at the New York State chess championship without a single defeat at the beginning of 2019 and he says he is not done yet.
“I want to be the youngest grandmaster,” Tani told The New York Times. Tani placed first in the tournament for kindergarten through third grade — an outstanding win for anyone. “It’s unheard of for any kid, let alone one in a homeless shelter,” said Russell Makofsky, who is in charge of the chess program.
Tani hasn’t had an easy life. His family left northern Nigeria in 2017 fearing attacks on Christians, and moved to New York City over a year ago where the boy learned how to play
chess at school. School chess coach Shawn Martinez saw Tani’s potential after observing him stand out in the game a few weeks after first learning it early last year. He reached out to Tani’s family about joining in the school’s chess program, and learned they were unable to pay costs associated with membership. Shawn decided to abandon Tani’s fees, which can easily reach thousands with travel and chess camp admissions.
Seven victories later, the elementary school boy is one of the top players in the country for his age group. “He works very hard at his game,” Martinez said, believing Tani could achieve master status in the next year or two. The world’s youngest grandmaster qualified at the age of 12.
As Tani’s story hits national headlines, more people want to help. Makofsky, who set up a GoFundMe for Tani, said the family has received offers for a car, legal services, jobs and even housing. “My hope is that he’ll be in a home tonight,” Makofsky said.
1. How did Makofsky find Tani’s achievement?
A. Confusing. B. Amusing.
C. Amazing. D. Ridiculous.
2. Shawn decided to abandon Tani’s fees because .
A. Makofsky told him to do so
B. Tani's family were unable to pay costs associated with their daily life.
C. Shawn took charge of the chess program
D. Tani had a great gift for chess.
3. What can we learn from Tani’s story?
A. All things are difficult before they are easy.
B. A good beginning makes a good ending.
C. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
D. God helps those who help themselves.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A Chess Coach Helped to Support a Nigerian Child
B. A Nigerian Family Hit National Headlines in the USA
C. A Homeless Nigerian Won the State Chess Championship
D. An 8-year-old Became the Youngest Grandmaster in 2019

This is the SCIENCE IN THE NEWS, I'm Barbara Klein.
Animal experts say one of the world's most beautiful and rare kinds of big cat is close to disappearing from the wild. A study earlier this year found that about thirty Amur leopards (豹) still live free. The cats are also called Far Eastern leopards.
Recently, their number has been reduced by one, some person shot a female Amur, then beat her to death. The animal's body was discovered last month in the Barsovy National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Russia.
An official of the World Wildlife Fund, Darron, said this was the third such killing in the area in the past five years. Mr. Collins said the death of even one adult female is a huge loss for the endangered cat. He noted that the killing reduces the possibility for cubs (幼兽) or young. It is not clear how many Amur leopards still live free. One population count was performed in
February and March. Wildlife expert Dmitry Pikuuov led this study. It found evidence of seven to nine males. The study identified three to seven females without cubs; four leopards were identified as females with cubs. In all, five or six cubs were recorded; six to eight animals could not be identified.
Most of the land where the Amur leopard once lived was in China. New roads and climate change there threatened the animals. So did hunters who kill big cats for their body parts.
Mr. Pikuuov says adult Amurs need about five hundred square kilometers with good forests to survive. He said they also need a large and continuing supply of animals like deer for food. He believes the answer to saving the Amur leopard is for governments to provide protected spaces for wildlife.
1. This passage is probably from .
A. a magazine B. a newspaper report
C. a film D. a TV report
2. Why is the killing of an adult female a huge loss?
A. It means it cannot give birth to the young any more.
B. It could lead to the death of an adult male.
C. It is worth more money than a male.
D. There is only one adult female in the world.
3. The number of the Amur leopards in China is becoming smaller because of all the following EXCEPT .
A. new roads B. rare diseases
C. human hunting D. climate change
4. According to the experts the Amur leopards .
A. are living on plants B. are endangered
C. are well protected by people D. are living in the zoo

It’s normal for teens to want to stay connected with friends and social circle, but what about that happening in the middle of the night? The Journal of Youth Studies recently published a new research showing that one in five teens from 12 to 15 regularly wake to spend all night on social media (社会媒体). Not surprisingly, the research also showed that these social night owls
were three times more likely than others to feel tired at school and that girls were more likely
than boys to be called to office.
The blue light produced by cell phones and computers makes the brain to stay awake, so it’s easy to see why a teen might be up all night. A study in Psychological Science showed the same brain reaction: when teens saw large numbers of “likes” on their posts, they stayed awake with excitement as if they had eaten chocolates or won money. Besides not catching up on sleep and
interrupting their sleep cycle, teens may never fully enter deep sleep that may be responsible for brain development and learning.
Considering about 72 percent of children from 6 to 17 sleep with some electronic media in their bedrooms, parents need to set rules sooner rather than later.
“Providing access (使用机会) to social media is a favor that children can earn and also lose,” Janie Feldman, an expert who treats sleep disorders (紊乱), reminds parents, “The bad effect is clear. So teens and parents should discuss and agree on its use, timing and access. When
teenagers agree to the rules, it’s easier for parents to control how much time they spend on the phones or computers.”
1. What does the underlined part “night owls” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Girls often called to office.
B. Teens who stay up late on social media.
C. Teens who are busy with their homework at night.
D. Boys regularly waking in the middle of the night.
2. How do teens react when seeing many “likes” on their posts according to the study?
A. They fall asleep easily and happily.
B. They are too excited to go to eat chocolates.
C. They are too excited to go to sleep.
D. They decide to make more good friends.
3. What suggestion does Janie Feldman give to parents?
A. Stopping their children from using cell phones.
B. Getting their children to do homework through computers.
C. Encouraging their children to stay connected with online friends.
D. Making regulations about media access together with their children.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Social media may have a bad effect on teens.
A. Kids are trying to win back the trust of their parents.
B. Social media may cause teens’ sleep disorders.
C. Deep sleep makes a big difference to brain development.

Dear Tom,
I am glad to know that the activity about Colorful World Cultures will be held in our school.
I am eager to be a member of it.
To begin with, as an outgoing boy, I am good at communicating with others. Secondly, I can speak fluent English and express myself clearly. What’s more, through the activity, not only can I make more friends but build up my character. I think it’s my duty to be able to introduce China to other friends and my honor to understand other cultures at the same time. Hopefully, I can take part in the activity.
Looking forward to your early reply.
