The message what the “Eat up All on Your Plate” campaign tries to convey is
not new.Our ancestors had poems about the importance of frugality(节俭) in the
consumption of food. But it makes a lot of sense when many are yet to have the awareness
that food waste borders on a crime.
The campaign has been started online and thousands of people have answered the
call. Many restaurants have joined the program by announcing that customers are
encouraged to order half a dish and take home what they can’t finish.
9
However,it is estimated(估计) that 50 million tons of grain are wasted every
year in China, enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
True, official banquets(宴席) paid with public money contribute much to such
waste. But it is important that everyone thinks about how they can do their bit to
reduce food waste. We need to develop the habit of never ordering or cooking more
than we can eat and feeling guilty when we dump our leftovers.
Many people have a bad habit of entertaining guests with more than enough food,
believing that they have not satisfied their guests’ appetites if there is no food
left on the table. In fact,to be a good host they order more than their guests can
possibly eat and their guests eat more than they want out of politeness.
Such a mentality needs to change.People need to be made aware that it is impolite
to force guests to eat more than they are comfortable with and it is insensible and
uncivilized to waste food.Even if one is wealthy, ordering more than one can eat
is a bad way to show off one’s wealth.

because .
A.some people have some bad eating habits
B.some officials are wasting a lot of food
C.wasting food is still rather common in China
D.saving food is a traditional virtue of China
But it makes a lot of sense when many are yet to
have the awareness that food waste borders on a crime.”
26.The writer shows how serious the problem of food waste is by .
A.using examples
B.offering figures
C.comparing
D.analyzing people’s attitude
10

C
A very close friend phoned me this weekend and asked a specific question about
earning a few extra dollars each month online. For the benefit of keeping her name
and details secret,I will call her Annie in this article. You see Annie suffers from
a severe form of inaction syndrome;she is full of great ideas that never materialize
into cash and she is having a problem finding the link that will achieve this.
Somebody once said that knowledge is power, yet we constantly find from readers
of our website that they have knowledge to burn and still do not have power.Just
look at the academics in universities all around the world;they have so much
knowledge that they should control the wealth of the world. In truth they work for
peanuts and very few of them ever achieve the power of independence. So knowledge
certainly isn’t power. Therefore,we should change that “wise” statement to
“Power is the ability to use knowledge to your own benefit.”
That paragraph was inserted because Annie is a typical academic—strong on talk
and plans but a little weaker on actions. In the period of a twentyminute
conversation, she expounded(阐述) a whole list of plans and ideas to make the extra
few hundred dollars each month she was seeking.Any one of her many ideas was a
potential money maker, but she had taken action on none of them.At one time she said,
“I’m lost as to what to do next.”
That was my cue(提示) to get involved.“Take action,” I advised.
All that is wrong is that Annie was inactive without knowing it.In five minutes
we drew up a plan of action and agreed to talk again in a month to review progress. When
we finished the conversation, she sounded much happier and more motivated than when
11
we started.Annie just needs a little nudge into beneficial action.
28.What’s the problem with Annie?
A.She has too many great ideas.
B.She never puts her ideas into practice.
C.She suffers from a strange illness.
D.She knows little about making money online.
Annie is a typical academic—strong on talk
and plans but a little weaker on actions.”
29.What is the most important according to the author?
A.The ability to use one’s knowledge.
B.The ability to acquire knowledge.
C.A great deal of knowledge.
D.A good understanding of oneself.
答案 A
Therefore,we should change that ‘wise’
statement to ‘Power is the ability to use knowledge to your own benefit.’”
故 A 正确。
30.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Annie will succeed in later life.
B.Annie is going towards success.
C.Annie doesn’t realize her problems.
D.Annie talks too much in daily life.
All that is wrong is that Annie was inactive
without knowing it.”
31.The underlined word “nudge” in the last paragraph probably means “ ”.
12
A.push B.advice
C.training D.power
答案 A
“When we finished the conversation, she sounded much happier and more motivated
than when we started.Annie just needs a little nudge into beneficial action.”
D
I have two kids,a boy and a girl.I don’t worry about my girl;I’m sure she’ll
be well trained in mixed martial arts.I worry about my son.I’m pretty sure he’s
going to be feminine(女性化的).Sorry to say that, but let’s face it.No dad wants
his son to go feminine.
At the rate we’re moving in a couple of years you won’t be able to tell the
difference between boys and girls.Sound extreme?Think about this.In every movie
where advanced timetraveling beings come to our planet there’s one constant:
You can’t tell the male aliens from the female aliens!
But that’s the future.Kids today are soft and fat.People ask why.Is it junk
food? No.Junk food has been around for fifty years. Is it video games? No.Video games
have been around for thirty years.None of the kids playing them back in the day were
terribly obese. We’re all scratching our heads trying to figure out what we’ve
introduced to society to ruin our kids. But it’s not anything we’ve added that has
ruined our kids. It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.
Take the gym rope for example.Remember that thing that stretched from the floor
to the ceiling in your gym class that you could never climb? Most of the kids
couldn’t make it to the top.But that wasn’t the point;the point was you had to
try while some middleaged guys who couldn’t make it up a flight of stairs shouted
at you.We should have put our son on that rope, and given him a head start. But we
didn’t want to shame the boy,so we took it down.
Taking down the rope would be a good idea if there were no ropes in life. But
they’re everywhere. You just can’t see them. They’re in every goal unrealized and
expectation not met.The point everyone missed about the rope is you weren’t supposed
to make it to the top.It was there to create a fire that burned in the oversized
belly of every kid.
32.What is the example of aliens used to show?
A.Girls are growing like boys.
B.Boys are going feminine.
C.There are really timetraveling beings.
D.Alien movies are popular with children.
“you won’t be able to tell the difference between boys and girls”再结合第一段
33.What causes kids today to be soft and fat?
A.Junk food.
B.Video games.
C.Stuff introduced to society.
D.Things removed from society.
But it’s not anything we’ve added that has
ruined our kids.It’s stuff we’ve gotten rid of.”
34.How does the author find teenagers today?
A.They have too much dignity.
B.They are overprotected.
C.They are less independent.
D.They are thought too highly of.
35.What does the rope probably symbolize?
A.Goals. B.Expectations.
C.Competition. D.Assistance.
Everyone wants love, money, success and so on in life.Yet too many people fail
to achieve their goals, and nearly all of them are for the same reason.Generally
speaking, getting what you really want out of life is just a matter of the following
simple steps.
You have to decide what it is you want the most. But do not make a list of wishes.
36 If you’re not sure about where you want to go,you’d better think it over
first and not hurry to perform.
37 This will be your map for getting from “where you are now” to “where
you want to go”.You know what you want, and what steps you are going to take to
get it.For example,if you want a better job, start with a skill assessment and maybe
some extra training. You’ll need to sell yourself and your skills to your new
employer.
Other goals will require a bit more thought. Some will really get you lost and
you don’t know how to get there. 38 For reading is a valuable source of
inspirations.
The final step is to carry it out. 39 Take the steps you outlined on your road
map and keep going on all the time.If you run into some people who are against you,
simply ignore them.
40 Keep trying.Whatever you do,do not lose heart before you have what you
desire in your hands.Never think that you can’t turn your dream into a reality.
A.Do what you have planned.
B.Hold a right attitude to what you’ve achieved.
C.Never give up the goal.
D.Try to focus on one thing at a time.
E.Not to worry, though, books can be of great help.
F.Make an action plan with care.
G.Form a good habit, whatever the result may be.
But do not
make a list of wishes.”
This will be your map for getting from ‘where you are now’
to ‘where you want to go’.You know what you want, and what steps you are going
to take to get it.”
项“Make an action plan with care.”
Some will really get you lost and you don’t know how to
get there.”
句“For reading is a valuable source of inspirations.”
