Among the four skills in learning English, which of these is the “Odd-One-Out”? The answer is speaking. The other three you can do alone on your own. But you can’t really speak alone! Speaking to yourself can be “dangerous” because men in white coats may come and take you away!
Where can you find people to speak English? And how can you practice speaking when you are alone?
At School If you pay to go to a language school, you should use the chance to speak. If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs or groups with other students, try to speak as much as possible. Don’t worry about your mistakes. Just speak!
Conversation Clubs Many cities around the world have conversation clubs where
people can exchange one language for another. Look in your local newspaper to find a conversation club near you. They are usually free although some may charge a small entrance fee.
Shopping Even if you don’t want to buy anything, you can ask questions about products that interest you in a shop. “How much does this cost?” “Can I pay by cheque(支票)?” Often you can start a real conversation —and it costs you nothing !
Café and Bars There are often American, British, Irish and Australian bars in many large cities. If you can find one, you’ll probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.
Language is all around you Everywhere you go you find language. Shop names, street names, advertisements, notices, and car numbers … When you walk down the street, practice reading the words and numbers that you see. Say them to yourself. It’s not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to “think” in English. But don’t speak too loud!
Songs and Video Repeat the words of an English-language song singing with the music until it becomes automatic(自动的). It’s good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles that you need for English.
Above all, speak as much as possible! Make as many mistakes as possible! When you know that you have made a mistake, you know you have made progress!

26.In which places can you learn English not free of charge(不是免费的)?

27. Why does the writer say “Make as many mistakes as possible”? Because .
A. everyone will meet people speaking English with some mistakes
B. making mistakes is a must in making progress in learning English
C. making mistakes can make one realize the importance of speaking
D. everyone will make mistakes in learning English
28. The purpose of this passage is to__________. .
A. tell us that you can speak English alone
B. tell us that English is all around you

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺骗) ? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example , some might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票) . It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser! He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (对手) says, " During Govemor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs !” That's true. However, an honest statement would have been , " During Govemor Smith's term , the state had a net gain of two million jobs. "
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, " Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.
" It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. lt's a sad fact of life :Lies are lies , and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
29. How much did the lottery winner lose?
A. Four hundred dollars. B. Two hundred dollars.
C. Three hundred dollars. D. One hundred dollars.
30. We may infer(推论) that the author believes people should___________.
A. buy lottery tickets B. make use of half-truths
C. be careful about what they are told D. not trust the Yucky Company
31. What can we know from the example of the Yucky Pill advertisement?
A. False statements are easy to see through.
B. Half-truths are often used to mislead people.
C. Doctors like to act in advertisement.
D. Advertisements are based on facts.
32. Which one should be the main idea of the passage?
A. He’s really a big loser
B. Sometimes the truth can lie as well.
C. Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.
D. It’s against the law to make false statements
. D
It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules
so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friend!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.
33. The last paragraphs mainly tell us about _____.
A. what to know about a new school
B. how to prepare for a new school
C. what to do on your first day of school
D. how to spend your first day of school
34. According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except _____.
A. introduce yourself B. learn about the school rules
C. make new friends D. go over your new lessons
35. If you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, from the passage we
know that you will feel ______.
A. nervous B. embarrassed C. happy D. surprising

Dear Jerry,
I am glad to hear from you. In your email you asked me about the after-school activities in our school and here I would like to introduce to you something about it.
There are over 20 students’ clubs and more than 30 electives in our school. I am in the basketball and chess clubs. The activities not only build up my body and mind but also provide a perfect platform and rich choices for my future development. Besides, they also free me from the heavy work of study, guaranteeing my sustainable development.
Here is my suggestion to the students on how to choose after-class activities: You’d better choose those which interest and suit you. What’s more, you have to balance your study and activities so as to achieve both.
You are warmly welcome to come and experience our after-school activities.
Best wishes!
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

W: Well, this festival has got something for everyone,no matter what your age. We've got Ollie James --- a famous cook! He's going to be giving a master class on preparing and cooking fish and seafood .
M: That's interesting.
W: Exactly. We're hoping he'll draw the crowds.
M: What else can people expect,Sarah?
W: Well, there's a photography competition with prizes for different age groups. There are stands selling local produce: cheeses, honey, fruit and vegetables. There's face-painting for children only.
M: It all sounds great,Sarah. So,when is the festival?
W. It’s next Saturday that’s June the thirteenth. It starts at ten o’clock in the morning and finishes at seven o’clock in the evening.
