I once lived in a small village in China.Later when my family moved to America,we took not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture with us.One of the rules brought is that young people should always respect elders.Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
One day an old couple came to the restaurant where I worked. The wife asked me why the food could be served so quickly.I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed a bit anger. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and told me a lot about how Americans dislike the word“elder”.I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife.
People are always proud of being old in my village. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience.Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
In the United States many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercise or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young, because they think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well.
After that,I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more;I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
2. The writer apologized to the wife because ____.
A. the manager asked him to do so
B. he served the elderly slowly
C. the couple wanted him to do so
D. the wife didn’t like being called “elder”
3. In the writer’s hometown, ___.
A. people dislike being called “elder”
B. people are proud of being old
C. many people reach the age of seventy or eighty
D. the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants
4. According to Paragraph 4,people in the United States ___.
A. dislike growing old
B. like doing exercise
C. have to retire at an early age
D. are always put on makeup
5. After this experience,the writer___.
A. lost his job in the restaurant
B. made friends with the couple
C. no longer respected the elderly
D. changed his way with older people

Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers than those who don’t. With help from their parents, children can learn techniques to improve their reading skills.
“A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,” Donna George said. “They are sadly mistaken.”
George offers her services to parents at the Title I Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do. “It is better for children to hear things at a high level than where they are,” George said. “Parents are their child’s first teacher.” Parents help their children build listening, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary skills when they read aloud to them .
Before parents can identify reading problems, they should escape the enemy—television and limit the time their children spend watching television. George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch. Louise Jones said that while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series.
Parents who do not read themselves should not count on their children being enthusiastic about it. If parents would read to their children at least 15 minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents’ job to help build that desire in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important.
1. According to George, reading aloud to children ______.
A. helps them correct mistakes
B. is helpful to their reading
C. is parents’ first duty to their children
D. can get children out of television’s attraction
2. The underlined word “distraction” (in Paragraph4) means something that can ___.
A. improve children’s reading skills
B. help children form the right habit of reading
C. make children interested in reading
D. stop children concentrating on reading
3. What is important according to the fourth paragraph?
A. Reading skills. B. Reading speed.
C. Reading materials. D. Reading environment.
4. The best title for the passage would be ______.
A. Children Spend More Time Reading with Parents
B. Parents Are Their Child’s First Teacher
C. How Parents Make Their Child a Better Reader
D. How to Improve Children’s Reading Ability

When I was about twelve, I headed to a restaurant for dinner with my family. It was winter, and on that particular night, the wind was really blowing. As my mom and I headed towards the restaurant from our car, a girl about my age and her mother came up to us. They asked if we had any spare change. My mom immediately asked where they kept their things. They pointed to an old car in a parking across the street. The girl said there were six of them living in that car, which was the same size as my own family.
My mom said she had something to do after handing the people a few dollars. She sent me inside the restaurant with my dad and my three siblings. But she didn't come.
Later, I found out she had gone home and practically emptied our cupboards into a few bags. Then, she brought that food over to the car and handed the bags to the family. I wasn't there when that part happened, but I can only imagine the joy it brought to their faces.
A few days later, when I actually found out about what she had done, I asked her why she helped those people. She told me that they were not lucky. I remember the face of that girl who had asked us for change; she was the same age as me, yet we looked so different.
Here I stood, dressed in almost new clothes, headed to dine in a restaurant and then back home to the bedroom I shared with my younger sister. I remember thinking that the girl didn't have any food to eat and that she was heading back to a cold car shared with five other people.
After painting this picture in my mind, I understood why my mom had done what she did. I will never forget what she did that night, and how she taught me one of the best lessons I ever learned.

2. Which of the following best describes the author's mother?
A. Reliable and determined. B. Considerate and enthusiastic.

3. How did the author feel when she knew what her mother had done?
A. She was unlucky to have such living conditions.
B. Her mother shouldn't help the strangers.
C. She must work hard to reward her mother.
D. She should value what she had.
4. What is the best title of the passage ?
A. How to support the poor family

How to Make Notes
If you are reading a novel for school rather than just for fun, you need to get organized. Here are a few tips.
First, make notes. Pencil notes in the book, but also write separate notes in a notepad. (16) What do they do in the novel? What are their aims? Everything that we are told about a character by a novelist can be related, from their appearance to the kind of food they eat.
It is also a great help to be able to tell yourself the story after you have read it. Therefore, the order in which a series of events happened and plot are important. (17) This will help you bring the observations you make about character, setting, language and so on together.
Next, focus on themes. These are abstract ideas that the author is concerned about. Perhaps love is a major theme, or justice, peace and war. (18)
Themes, though, are nothing without language. Language is what novels are made of. (19) They may use metaphors (比喻), invent symbols, or show who characters are with different speech styles for different characters.
(20) Is a novel told in the third person or from the point of view of a character? There are many different kinds of points of view, and they have a great effect on the reader’s experience of a story.
A. Pay attention to characters.
B. Reading is very interesting.
C. Make sure that you know the author’s ideas and what the author is saying about them.
D. Point of view is another very important novelistic tool.
E. As you read, make a brief note of what happens in each chapter.
F. Writers use language in a special way to make their novels work.
G. When you read, don’t forget to set down the main idea of the novel.

1. Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m a student from Xinhua Middle School. I am glad to learn that you want volunteer teachers of English. I am quite interested in it.
I think I am the right person you want. First, English is my favorite and I’m good at it. Second, I can express myself clearly and fluently in English. Third, I am kind , friendly and above all, patient. Last but not least, I once worked as an English tutor for my classmate. With my help, his English improved a lot.
From my point of view, voluntary work helps me to become confident and mature. That’s why I am writing to apply for a post though I have a busy timetable.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
