Looking for a winter vacation destination? Try these four resorts (度假胜地)on for size.
Solitude Mountain Resort, Utah
SolitudeMountain is a place often recommended by tourist agents. It's a place to go if you love skiing in winter but hate waiting on lift lines. Loving a bargain doesn't hurt either since the accommodations here are less expensive than at nearby and more well-known Park City, Alta, and Snowbird. Solitude surely lives up to its name as one of Utah's most lovely winter ski resorts.
Key West, Florida
The crowds thin out and the prices fall in Key West in winter. Key West, the southernmost point in the United States, has a remote, romantic feel. It has inspired many poets and has drawn such literary greats as Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. It will inspire you to literally celebrate the sunrise. Seriously, there are nightly sunset celebrations!
Taos, New Mexico
Taos, New Mexico is a popular winter ski spot. But if you're not a skier, you'll want to head there anytime between Thanksgiving and April since there are fewer people there then. You'll still be able to experience all the culture and sights, including the thousand-year-old Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community that is regarded as both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark.
Big Sky, Montana
Big Sky, Montana, has more than 5,800 acres of skiing area spreading across several mountains, with a vertical (垂直的) drop of 4,350 feet, as well as 85km of Nordic tracks. Many people think of Montana as a place to go in the summer for fly-fishing, cattle chasing, and sheep-spotting. But it's also a good choice to head for Big Sky for the fantastic skiing in winter because then it has been called “the least crowded resort ever”
21. What's the advantage of Solitude Mountain Resort over the other three resorts?
A. Having warmer climate in winter.
B. Having relatively cheaper accommodations.
C. Providing bargains for visitors in stores.
D. Being close to the modern cities.
22. What is Taos Pueblo?
A. It is a hotel in Mexico. B. It is the name of a designer.
C. It is an ancient community. D. It is a national park.
23. What's the common characteristic of the above places in winter according to the text?
A. Risky. B. Uncrowded. C. Cheap. D. Unpolluted.

When I was 17,I read a magazine article about a museum called the McNay, once the home of a water-colorist named Marian McNay. She had requested the community to turn it into a museum upon her death. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, “Do you have the address?” “No, but I'll recognize it, there was a picture in the magazine.”
“Oh, stop. There it is!”
The museum was free. We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us.
“May I help you?” a man asked.“No,” I said.“We're fine.” Tour guides got on my nerves. What if they talked a long time about a painting you weren’t that interested in? Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very nosy(爱窥探的), keeping their eyes on me with curiosity; What was their problem? I saw some nice sculptures in one room. Suddenly I sensed a man standing behind me. “Where do you think you are?” he asked. I turned sharply. “The McNay Art Museum!” He smiled, shaking his head.“Sorry, the McNay is on New Braunfels Street.” “What's this place?” I asked, still confused.“Well, it's our home.” My heart jolted(震颤). I raced to the staircase and called out,“Sally! Come down immediately!”
“There's some really good stuff(艺术作品) up there.” She stepped down, looking confused. I pushed her toward the front door, waving at the family, saying, “Sorry, please forgive us, you have a really nice place.” Outside, when I told Sally what happened, she covered her mouth, laughing. She couldn't believe how long they let us look around without saying anything.
The real McNay was splendid, but we felt nervous the whole time we were there. Van Gogh, Picasso. This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened.
Thirty years later, a woman approached me in a public place.“Excuse me, did you ever enter
a residence, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?”
“Yes. But how do you know? We never told anyone.”
“That was my home. I was a teenager sitting in the hall. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. I never felt lucky before. You thought it was a museum. My feelings about my home changed after that. I've always wanted to thank you.”

With the internet and smartphones, people have immediate access to news from all over the world. It sounds like good thing, but can there ever be too much of it?
While access to news is important, the news itself is usually bad. This makes some sense. Not many people would buy a newspaper with headlines like, “Everything is great!” or, “The sky is more blue today than yesterday.”
Yet there is a problem that comes from the amount of news we're taking in. People feel increased anxiety and stress because they get so much negative information.
Why is this happening? As social animals, humans are empathetic(感同身受的) and compassionate(同情) toward each other. This is great for our communities, but when we read about people suffering in a faraway place, we feel heartbroken. This wonderful thing about humans instead becomes part of the problem.
“There’s actually, for many people, physical pain in wanting to help一our heart goes out to them,” US Professor Charles Figley, a mental health specialist, told National Public Radio. He calls it “bad-news burnout (倦怠).” Others call it “the hope gap”, which refers to the phenomenon that we feel surrounded by problems.
Before this news stresses you out, take a deep breath, because you can take control of the situation right now. The first step is to take Figley’s advice and turn off the news. “We can't obviously run away and hide forever, but yes, we do need to take breaks,” he said.
Next, change the scenery. Leave the room where you get news and negative information.
Better yet, go for a walk. Don't let news into the parts of your life that are meant for socializing or relaxing. “Lighten up, just enjoy life, smile more, laugh more, and don't get so worked up about things,” Irish actor Kenneth Charles Branagh told US-based Interview Magazine.
Life is short and your time is valuable. Make more time for friends, family and hobbies. Youdon't need to spend it worrying about things you can't control. Instead, direct your energy toward the things you can change.
28. What does the word “problem” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. People are faced with too much information.
B. People get anxious with so much negative news.

A. explain how people are affected by bad news.
B. show that it's impossible to solve all problems.

D. explain the benefits of human compassion.
30. What does the author suggest people do with the stress caused by negative information?
A. Avoid reading any bad news.

C. Find a relaxing environment.
D. Find some good news to read.
31. The underlined phrase “worked up”in the second to last paragraph probably means________.
A. surprised

In today’s rapidly changing workplace and emerging gig economy (零工经济), each year a growing number of top employers --from Google to IBM--are desperately trying to employ graduates to fill open positions. Though colleges contribute millions of smart graduates to the market each year, employers still find it hard to employ the persons meeting their requirements. According to a recent Brookings’ study, we 're facing an estimated 55 million job openings by 2020 without the workforce to fill them.
There is clearly a disconnect between what schools are offering and what employers need, and the skills gap continues to grow as a result. To fix this, schools need to deliver more career (职业) pathways to more students with the aid of network technology, at an earlier age.
All students-whether they plan to continue their education after high school graduation or not--should begin exploring pathways and developing the skills needed for in-demand careers during middle and high school.
Along with the expansion of career education to more students, we need to reconsider how to deliver it most efficiently and effectively. It is not economically viable, or necessary, to build large training centers focused on specific career pathways in each school district. Instead, we can develop a national infrastructure(基础设施) at a lower price that enables every high school student to have access to career training through online learning and local or regional training
opportunities. Thanks to new technologies, students are able to learn technical skills online, from anywhere. For example, we can provide students with exposure to industry experts through live teaching sessions, and use virtual reality to offer 3-D anatomy (解剖) and physiologytools to aid in health care education.
As the workforce continues to develop, it’s up to educators to prepare students for it. By applying education technology to a national infrastructure, more students will have a head start to succeed in a rewarding career. And more employers will find employees with the skills they need. For the sake of students and the national economy, it's time for career education to catch up with the demands of today's workforce.
32. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A. A variety of jobs have disappeared in the business world.
B. Gig economy has become a new trend in today's business.
C. Schools fail to keep pace with workforce demands.
D. Graduates are desperately eager to work for big companies.
33. What are the schools advised to do according to the text?
A. To expand career education at secondary education stage.
B. To improve students' academic performance.
C. To raise students' awareness of job security.
D. To encourage more students to go to college.
34. What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reliable. B. Comparable.
C. Profitable. D. Practicable.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. National Infrastructure Vital to Economic Growth
B. Education Technology Key to Career Readiness
C. Online Learning Academically Beneficial to Students

Social skills are often thought of as a set of skills that allow people to communicate and relate with others. 36 These skills are often the way to determine a person’s status, consider people as potential friends, and evaluate them for employments or promotions in the workplace.
In most English-speaking countries, verbal (言语的) skills are an important aspect of social skills. 37 Specifically, one should master the skill of saying the appropriate thing at the appropriate time, as well as speaking in an educated but reasonably understandable manner.
People with good verbal skills in the US are thought to speak with a clear voice, speak appropriately in a situation, and have confidence in their voice. Poor skills might be read as saying the wrong thing, speaking too softly to be heard or too loudly to be tolerated. 38
The other aspect of social skills is nonverbal. Standing up straight, makingeye contact, making appropriate gestures, leaning toward the person one is speaking to, and smiling appropriately can all define good nonverbal skills.
39 People who smile too much may not be trusted, and leaning too far forward into
someone else’s personal space may be considered rude.
40 A nod of the head, commenting occasionally, and clearly taking in someone else’s ideas are valuable during the whole conversation. Most people don' t simply want to be talked to; they want to be talked with.
A. People with good nonverbal skills listen well.
B. However, overdoing such things will work oppositely.
C. Body language is also an aspect of nonverbal social skills.
D. They include both verbal and nonverbal forms of communication.
