His first successful fight was for the equal rights of black people in South Africa. Then, as the first black president, he fought to unite the country and organize the government. Now Nelson Mandela has set his sights on a new enemy, AIDS.
On March 19 the former president, hosted his second AIDS awareness concert. He warned that 25 million people in Africa were already infected with the fatal disease.
Mandela was born in a small village in South Africa in 1918. He was adopted by the chief of his tribe and could have been a chief himself and lived a happy country life
But he refused to be a chief when his people lived under racial discrimination(歧视). He decided to fight for equal rights for all the people in South Africa. Before 1990, under the country's Racial Segregation Law, coloured people and white people lived separately. Black people were treated unfairly even when taking a bus. Blacks had to stand at the back of the bus to make room for white people even when there were only a few of them on board
For his opposition to the system, Mandela was arrested and spent 27 years in prison. He was freed in 1990 and became the president of the country after the first election was held in which everyone could vote
Mandela was not only a political fighter who attacked with speeches. He was also a trained boxer and fought in the ring when he was young.
"Although I did not enjoy the violence of boxing, I was interested in how one moved one's body to protect oneself, how one used a strategy both to attack and retreat," he wrote in his autobiography. As a skilful fighter, he chose music as his weapon against AIDS. He hopes to win another victory against AIDS
21. When was Mandela arrested?
A. In 1963. B. In 1990. C. When he refused to be a chief. D. When he became the president.

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher
required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic'.
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line , my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign:"GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a. m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a"marathon winner.
24. A month before the marathon, the author______.
A.was well trained. B. felt scared C.made up his mind to run. D.lost hope.
25. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year?
A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher. B. To amuse the readers with a funny story.
C. To show he was not talented in sports. D. To share a precious memory.
26. How was the author's first marathon?
A. He made it. B. He quit halfway. C. He got the first prize. D.He walked to the end.
27. What does the story mainly tell us?
A.A man owes his success to his family support. B.A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D.One is never too old to learn.

One of the most famous buildings in the United States is Carnegie Hall, the home of classical and popular music concerts in New York. Carnegie Hall is known not only for its beauty and history, but also for its amazing sound. Carnegie Hall is named after Andrew Carnegie, who paid for its construction. The construction of Carnegie Hall began in 1890 and the official opening night was on May 5th, 1891.
The hall was owned by the Carnegie family until 1924 when it was sold to Robert E Simon. The building became very old and in 1960, the new owner made plans to destroy it and build an office block. Isaac Stem led a group of people who fought to save Carnegie Hall and finally, the city of New York bought it for 5 million dollars. It was then fixed up between 1983 and 1995.
Advertisements and stories in newspapers about how Carnegie Hall needed help to recover its history led people to send in old concert programmes and information from all over the world. Over 12,000 concert programmes were received and with these it was possible to make a proper record of Carnegie Hall's concert history.
Carnegie Hall is actually made up of several different halls, but the Main Hall, now called the Isaac Stem Auditorium, is the most famous. The hall itself can hold an audience of 2,804 in five levels of seating.
Because the best and most famous musicians of all time have played at Carnegie Hall, it is a dream of most musicians who want to be great to play there. This has led to a very old joke which is now part of Carnegie Hall's history.Question: "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" Answer:"Practice, practice, practice."
28.It can be inferred that people wanted to save Carnegie Hall mainly because_______.
A it made a lot of money. B. it was worth visiting.
C.many important concerts were held at it. D.it made some players become famous.
29.How did Carnegie Hall recover its concert history?
A.Through newspaper reports. B. Through old concert programmes.
C. Through old photographs. D.Through old jokes.
30. Why is the Carnegie Hall joke funny?
A. Because you expect the answer to be directions but not advice.
B. Because Carnegie Hall is a place where musicians practice a lot.
C. Because it is difficult to find your way to Carnegie Hall.
D.Because you don't expect the answer to repeat the same word three times.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Should We Create More National Parks to Save Endangered Animals?
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct? 31 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
__32 If this environment is destroyed---for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits---many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A
major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money 33
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. 34 They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. 35 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A. To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B. Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C. I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D. These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E. Firstly, national parks protect these animals' natural environment.
F. They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.
G.There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.
