Born in Germany in 1647, Merian was fond of insects, and she began collecting, studying and drawing them when she was as young as 13. It was through her study of caterpillar that she discovered the truth about their life cycles, and she went on to publish two volumes of naturalist research about the life cycles of insects.‎ Ada Lovelace Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was the daughter of famous British poet Lord Byron, but she wasn't a poet herself. She was the world's first computer programmer. Lovelace wrote some suggestions as to how to program “computing machines” to calculate a ‎ specific sequence of numbers. Besides this, she predicted them to do everything that could possibly be represented by a series of numbers, from producing images to composing music.‎ Hedy Lamarr She was born in 1914 in Austria and moved to the United States in the hope of going after a film career. In 1942, in the midst of her Hollywood success, she and composer George Antheil received a patent(专利) for a device that could change radio signal frequencies. The purpose of the technology was to keep military enemies—especially, the Nazis --from decoding (解码) messages. But it did more than that--it paved the way for much of the wireless technology we use today.‎ ‎21. One who went from the country to the city and one who did the opposite.‎ Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louis five years ago. Here’s what Janet told us:‎ ‎“Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too. You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don’t know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like being anonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.”‎ Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us: ‎ ‎“The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose, if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had ‎ good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses(开销) as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield.”‎ ‎24. What troubled Janet when she was in Lemon Falls?‎ A. She had no friends. B. There was no secrets.‎ C. There was a lot of competition. D. Many take this Taiwanese drink as a guilt-free snack similar to juice or a cup of coffee. After all, it has the word “tea”in it, so it has to be healthy…right?‎ Not quite. Like coffee, bubble tea’s ingredients(成分,配料) might not be so bad on their own, but when they’re loaded with sweetener(甜味剂) and artificial flavor(人工香料), they lose their nutritional (营养的) value fast.‎ It all starts with those “bubbles”found at the bottom of your drink, which are actually round pieces of tapioca(木薯淀粉). Called “tapioca pearls(珍珠)”, they’re actually made from a vegetable that grows in South America. And as it turns out, those little balls are loaded with sugar—and not the nutritious, fiber-rich(富含纤维) kinds found in whole grains(全麦类), either.‎ Cooking tapioca pearls only makes it worse. They’re typically fried in hot water, along with even more added sugar, for up to three hours. By that point, these balls could have nearly 160 calories per ¼ cup.‎ And don’t even get us started on what comes in the extra syrups(糖浆). Thanks to all those processed(加工的) ingredients, the average bubble tea can easily reach 300 to 400 calories per cup!‎ On top of being an unhealthy habit, bubble tea could even shorten your life. In 2012, a group of German researchers from the University Hospital Aachen reportedly found aspolychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in tapioca ball samples. These cancer-causing chemicals have also been shown to have other bad effects on the immune(免疫), reproductive(生殖), and nervous systems.‎ You might want to lay off your bubble tea addiction. Thankfully, we have a few choices for low-calorie, healthier drinks, instead.‎ ‎28. Why is bubble tea considered “guilt-free” by many people? ‎ A. It is popular in Taiwan.                        B. Its name includes “tea”. C. It is similar to juice and coffee.           D. It is liked by Internet foodies.‎ ‎29. What can we know about tapioca pearls? ‎ A. They don’t contain any sugar.                      B. They are made from a kind of fruit. C. They contain all the calories of tea.            D. They are usually cooked and fried.‎ ‎30. What will be discussed following this passage? ‎ A. Bad effects caused by bubble tea.              B. Some examples of healthy drinks. C. Energy you get from bubble tea.                D. Getting into the habit of drinking tea.‎ ‎31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? ‎ A. Bubble tea is very popular.                         B. Tapioca pearls are nutritious. C. Bubble tea is pretty bad for you.                 D. Advice on healthy drinks.‎ D In China, Double Twelve Shopping Day is approaching. And there is a similar case in the United States—Black Friday. It has been regarded as the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Although it’s not an official holiday, millions of employers give their employees the day off, and many people use that day to get a jump-start on their holiday shopping. A similar day in Canada and Great Britain is called “Boxing Day”.‎ Black Friday has become somewhat of a marketing sensation in recent years. Since 2005, it has been the busiest shopping day of the year. To lure shoppers, retailers (零售商) routinely open their doors as early as 4 a.m. and offer special sales and promotions to the shoppers that arrive early. Some of the special deals offered by stores are only available in limited quantities. That is why some shoppers intent on getting the best deals often camp out in front of stores overnight so that they’ll be the first in line when the doors open.‎ But why is it called Black Friday? Historians believe the name started in Philadelphia in the mid-1960s. Bus drivers and police used “Black Friday” to describe the heavy traffic that would block city streets the day after Thanksgiving as shoppers headed to the stores.‎ Businesses, however, didn’t like the negative tone associated with the “Black Friday” name. In the early 1980s, a more positive explanation of the name began to circulate. According to this alternative explanation, Black Friday is the day when retailers finally begin to turn a profit for the year. In accounting terms (会计行业), operating at a loss is called being “in the red” because accountants traditionally used red ink to show negative amounts. Positive amounts were usually shown in black ink. Thus, being “in the black” is a good thing because it means stores are operating at a profit.‎ Recently, for those who are too busy to shop on Black Friday or who just don’t want to fight the crowds, the Monday following Black Friday has become known as Cyber Monday (网络星期一) for the many online deals.‎ ‎32. The author writes this passage in order to       . ‎ A. state the development of Cyber MondayB. tell the difference between red and black C. introduce Black Friday to the readers    D. explain the meaning of Boxing Day 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Learning English online is a good way to improve your English.
