Jack Ma, a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, refused to take what fate handed him. He exposed himself to English. Due to his fluency in English, he made a career out of being a tour guide. Most people would take his free tour-guiding as an act of foolishness. What they did not see was that Jack was not after the money but after the experience he would acquire upon mingling with different kinds of people.
Later in his youth, although he failed the entrance exam twice, he attended Hangzhou Teacher's Institute and graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in English. While at school, Ma was elected student chairman. He later became a lecturer in English and International Trade at Hangzhou University of Electronics. He went on to attend further education at the Beijing-based Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.
It is not easy for someone with business knowledge to rise above the countless competitions. Even people born with a silver spoon in their mouth still think twice before risking only part of their fortune on business investments. Jack Ma neither had the business academic background nor the monetary support. He had to borrow money before he could start his own business. He willingly took the first step with both eyes closed.
His compassion for small businesses leads to his success. He wants to focus on small and medium-sized companies, rather than the big ones, and his main goal is to help them become successful. Alibaba would still be a 1,001 Arabian Nights character if not for Jack Ma's hard-working spirit. Alibaba Group defined e-commerce not only within China, but also in the international business scene.
Asked about the secret of his success, Ma mentioned the famous tale about the race between the tortoise and the hare (龟兔赛跑),where the former won. “To be successful in this world,” he said, “ you must combine the advantages of both: the speed of the hare and the willpower of the tortoise.",

27. It can be inferred from the passage that_______.
A. Jack Ma was very cautious in making investments
B. Jack Ma believes endurance is the key to succeed in business
C. Alibaba is not yet well-known outside of China
D. Small businesses are more likely to benefit from Jack Ma

Cycling to school or work is now faster and more efficient (高效的)than any other types of transport in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The city has gone all out to encourage its cyclists 一it has laid out more than 1,000 km of cycle lanes (车道), and improved traffic signals at the crossroads.
No wonder Copenhagen's cyclists hardly break traffic rules. Several of the city's main streets are closed to cars and instead have only cycle lanes and cycle parking areas. Bike lanes along the major roads are wide and slightly raised. Copenhagen is developing 38 bike superhighways along the main city routes. The city's light rail system has recently permitted cyclists to bring their cycles on board, and it is free of charge.
The city planners are absolutely committed to make cyclists feel safe. So when cyclists approach a major crossroads, sensors (传感器)a little way down the streets tell the traffic lights to give them a “green" signal, which means cyclists are rarely held up by traffic. It is simply a smooth continuous journey from home to school! Even in the bitterly cold winters, the cycle lanes are cleared of snow before car lanes.
Lately, however, the government is facing a new and curious problem. Many cyclists have now started leaving their cycles just about anywhere. Often, the biggest challenge faced by cyclists is getting their bike out of these huge piles without getting chain oil onto themselves. Perhaps the solution lies in turning more car parking spaces into cycle parking areas, or else, building multi-story or underground parking spaces for cycles.
Meanwhile, other urban cities are following this capital city's example. London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Beijing and many other are all adopting measures to encourage cyclists, inspired by the City of Cyclists.
2 8. Copenhagen is putting in a great deal of effort to make it ______.
A. more beautiful B. less crowded
C. environment-friendly D. tourist-friendly
29. What problem is the government facing?
A. Building more underground parking spaces.
B. Many cyclists leaving their cycles everywhere.
C. Cyclists getting their bikes out easily.
D. Many cyclists breaking traffic rules.
30. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Copenhagen 一 a Real Cyclists' City.
B. Copenhagen 一 More Parking Spaces for Cycles.
C. Cycling to School or Work in Denmark.
D. Strict Traffic Rules to Protect Cyclists.
31. What's the author's attitude towards cycling can we infer from the text?
A. Negative
B. Critical
C. Uninterested
D. Positive

If you thought running was just great for the body, then think again.
Scientists have uncovered evidence the sport not only keeps people slim but also improves brain power.
The research found that people who keep fit are more likely to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive (认知的)skills.
The findings add to a growing body of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing and also aiding it replace dying cells. This might reduce the risk of debilitating illnesses and diseases (退行性疾病)such as Alzheimer's.
One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59-69 on a treadmill (跑步机).Their heart and lung capacity was measured and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains.
Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged from 60 to 77. As they went through a three-month fitness program they saw improvements in their memory.
Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results.
Mice, examined at the National Institute on Aging, in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus (海马体),an area of the brain used for memory, were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.
Linda Clare, professor of clinical psychology of ageing and dementia (痴呆)at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain Health told The Sunday Times: "Moderate-intensity aerobic (有氧的)activity such as brisk walking, cycling or running can produce changes in brain structure and function.”
32. According to the third paragraph, fit people tend to have ____.
A. smaller brains
B. reduced cognitive skills
C. better memories
D. unclear thinking
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Scientists in Germany measured the heart and lung capacity of 30 adults aged 59-69.
B. Scientists found those who were fitter had larger brains.
C. Linda Clare monitored the research at Kentucky University.
D. Researchers have found out why exercise helps to protect brain cells.
34. What can we know from Linda Clare's words?
A. Brisk walking is not a kind of aerobic activity.
B. Aerobic activities have no effect on brain structure and function.
C. Riding a bike can produce changes in brain structure and function.
D. All kinds of aerobic activities can do good to our brain.
35. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Aerobic Sports Improve Your Health
B. What is an Aerobic Activity?
C. Functions of the Hippocampus
D. Sports Help You Think Better

参考范文
Dear Leslie,
I'm glad to receive your email. You asked me to share with you what I'm doing in the epidemic situation. Here are my experiences. Since the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan in December,2019,I have been staying at home. On the one hand, I pay close attention
to the epidemic situation through watching CCTV news or surfing the Internet; on the other hand I insist on studying. Not only do I read classics, but also I have online courses given by my teachers. Besides, I take exercise every day to keep healthy. Faced with the disaster, many people including doctors, nurses and scientists act bravely and spare no effort to fight against it. They are real heroes. Thank you for your concern. I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
