American actor James Dean has been dead for 64 years. James Dean, who died at the age of
25 in September 1955, starred in just three movies before he died in a car accident. They are Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant. Yet, he will star in a new movie about the Vietnam War thanks to digital technology, which generates (产生) images of James Dean by computer.
The idea that one of the movies’ most beloved former stars would be recreated digitally for a new film has been met with criticism (批评). Captain America actor Chris Evans called the plans to use Dean’s image in the film disrespectful.
However, Mark Roesler, the chairman of CMG said, “Dean has more than 183,000 followers on Instagram, and that he is still important today. He was known as Hollywood’s ‘rebel (叛逆)’ who famously said ‘if a man can bridge the gap (沟壑) between life and death, if he can live after he’s dead, then maybe he is a great man.’” Roesler added, “What was considered rebellious in the 50’s is very different from what is rebellious today, and we feel confident that he would support this modern day act of rebellion.”
Anton Ernst, the film’s director, said, “I respect Dean’s life and history. The movie is one of hope and love. There are still a lot of James Dean’s fans worldwide and there would always be critics. All we can do is to tell a great story.” Ernst added, “The Dean family views this as his fourth movie, a movie he never got to make. We do not want to let his fans down.”

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don’t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
28.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest D.pretending to be injured
29.By “Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky” (paragraph5), the author means ________.
A.chimps are ready to attack others B.chimps are sometimes dishonest
C.chimps are jealous of the winners D.chimps can be selfish too
30.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner’s hand.
C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.
D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
31.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Do animals lie? C.Does Mother Nature fool animals?
C.How do animals learn to lie? D.How does honesty help animals survive?
D
Skeptics are a strange lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment, and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.
Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much popularity. That book, The Skeptic Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some industry-funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.
So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”
Such one-sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible(不可信的)”.
A critical (批判的)eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blinded before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.
32.According to the passage, which of the following may be regarded as “skeptics”?
A.People who agree on the popularity of “eco-guilt”.
B.People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.
C.People who dislike the harmful effect of human activities.
D.People who spread comforting news to protect our environment.
33.Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s book?
A.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.
B.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.
C.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews.
D.Industry–funded media present confusing information.
34.The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to____.
A.voice a different opinion B.find fault with Lomborg’s book
C.challenge the authority of the media D.point out the value of scientific views
35.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.
B.To warn the public of the danger of half–blindness with reviews.
C.To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in presenting information.
D.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.

Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction. When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good.
36.In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, one that doctors recommend we all cut down on.
“It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes. Why? “ 37.“ says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. 38.
So what is the solution? It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. 39.From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat.
But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. 40.Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building facilities like walking tracks so students and others in the community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.
A.We take in more energy and fat.
B.Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more.
C.Our ancestors were used to poor food, clothing and shelter.
D.So the very thing that once saved us, may now be killing us.
E.Sugar, we believe, is one of the reasons, if not the major one.
F.The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid.
G.Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier options like fruit.

The mascot(吉祥物) for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games official made its public appearance on Tuesday. It was a cartoon character inspired by giant pandas. The smiling panda is named with Bing Dwen Dwen in Chinese. Color circles around its face symbolize skating tracks and 5G technology. Bing, Chinese word for "ice", shows purity and strength, but Dwen Dwen, means sincerity, liveliness and health — also characteristics of pandas. Perhaps pandas are the animals most easily recognizing by us in China. The mascot combines our traditional culture and how pandas look like with winter sports elements. The image shows our great expect of the Games and that our Chinese welcome the world.
