Animal moms, on the other hand, never get any thanks. But animal moms are also great moms. You might be surprised at some of these moms.‎ Octopuses (章鱼)‎ The mother octopus lays about 50,000 eggs. For about 300 days, she stays with the eggs, cleans them and protects them. She does not leave to feed. However, this animal mom dies as soon as the eggs are hatched (孵化).‎ Crocodiles (鳄鱼)‎ A crocodile mother puts a lot of time and effort into raising her babies. She starts by building a nest, which she guards for over two months! When the eggs are ready to hatch, the young crocodiles call out to their mother, who digs them out and helps them hatch. She then carries them in her mouth down to the water, where she will guard them for several more weeks or ‎ months until they learn to hunt on their own.‎ Bats Bats become moms by hanging head up in a cave, giving birth. Catching the youngster before it can fall to the ground below, she puts it in a pouch (育儿袋).Bat moms may carry babies with them when feeding for the first few days.As the little bats get bigger and heavier, moms help them hang on the wall of their caves and return often to feed them.It continues for about three weeks, until the babies are grown up and able to fly on their own.‎ Koalas(考拉)‎ The animal mom gives birth after a pregnancy (怀孕期) of only 35 days. The hairless baby climbs into its mother's pouch and lives there for another five months. When the little koala is between five and eight months old, it leaves the pouch for short periods of time but returns for safety. Most farmers’ calves (小牛)often got sick. I was proud that mine were usually healthy. I loved it when the whole family worked together to get a field of dry grass into the barn (仓房) before a rainstorm. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a ‎ language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.‎ 28. The main subject talked about in this passage is ________. A. science on learning a second language B. man’s ability of learning a second language C. that language can help brain power D. language learning and maths study ‎29. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means _______. A. a researcher on language learning B. a second language learner C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner ‎31. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that _________. A. learning a second language is the same as studying maths B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language D. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language ‎ D If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.‎ When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.‎ If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault . Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.‎ So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.‎ ‎32.Someone can’t have a good memory if ________.‎ A.he can’t read or write B.his parents haven’t a good memory C.he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time D.he doesn’t make good use of his memory ‎33.If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________.‎ A.they will become thin B.they will become weak C.they begin to ache all over D.you can’t use them any more ‎34.Few people know that if someone has a poor memory it is ________.‎ A.his own fault B.his parents’ fault C.his teachers’ fault D.his friends’ fault ‎35.Give the best title for this passage. ____.‎ A.Don't Stop Using your Arms or Legs B.Learn from the People C.How to Have a Good Memory D.Strong Arms and Good Memories 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Are you simply moving through your day without fully living? I think many of us have done this. Everyone wants to fully live every day. 36 So I’ve decided to share with you some ways to help you enjoy every moment.‎ Sit in the morning. When you wake up, in the quiet of the morning, sit on the floor. I often use this opportunity to stretch (伸展). 37 I also just sit, and focus on my breathing going in and out.‎ ‎38 I like to take breaks from work, and go outside for a slow walk. Pay attention to your breathing, to everything around you, to the sounds and light of objects.‎ Read in silence. Find a quiet time, and a quiet place, and read a good novel. But that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.“It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.‎ My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.‎ Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?”She shook her head.“Then what did you do with the flowers?”She smiled slightly,“I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员).”“What?”She laughed at my confusion.“I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”‎ I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again,“Did you leave your name?”To this she answered instantly,“No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. ” ‎ Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down!Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed us what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received it. While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired. ‎ ‎ Paragraph2:‎ As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the ‎ effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.‎
