Living in a modern society with more and more out-of-date but still useful computers, many people have to face such a troubling problem: How to deal with those old computers? Some old ones are put away in homes. Many more are just thrown out with the rubbish.
Don’t worry! Some companies are coming up with new ways to cut the number of old computers. Sony, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other companies now agree to take back some old computers.
In some countries, there are laws about what to do with old computers. By law, computer companies will have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay the cost. That will encourage them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade (升级).
While many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers before sending them to schools, charities(慈善团体)and people who need them. In this way, we can turn one person's rubbish into someone else's useful things-and cut down on waste.
24. What do many people do with old computers?
A. They sell them to others. B. They stop using them
C. They give them to others. D. They try to repair them.

Leymah Gbowee, ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, dreamed of peace and made it happen, founding a movement of women who brought peace and a female president to Liberia.
On the night of her high school graduation party, surrounded by family, neighbors, and friends, Leymah Gbowee imagined a bright future. She planned to study biology and chemistry in college and become a pediatrician. However, Gbowee writes in her autobiography(自传), Mighty Be Our Powers, within six months of that party in 1989, everything around her was gone — her country broken by civil war, her family broken, her plans gave up. And Gbowee never became a doctor. Gbowee saw civilians(平民) killed before her eyes. She escaped with relatives from one shelter(避难处;收容所) to another, often went hungry. Upon returning to Liberia in 1991, she saw a terrible sight: everyone had escaped, leaving their homes to the fighters.
Yet her spirit wouldn't die. She began studying under a UNICEF program. Finally, with her family's help, she imagined a movement of women demanding peace in Liberia and made it happen. Traveling from village to village, Gbowee began organizing women and persuaded women of different cultures to unite; under her leadership, thousands of women were dressed all in white to symbolize(cc标志) peace. Gbowee writes:“We were silent before, but after so many of us have been killed, fallen with diseases, and lost our children and families, war has taught us that the future lies in saying no to violence and yes to peace!”
The women had reason to fear, but Gbowee had no choice. Then women could have the right to vote. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa's first female president in 2005. Gbowee's work was just beginning. She now travels round the world, meeting with everyone from presidents to CEOs to people living in tiny villages, fighting for women and girls.
28. Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to _______.
A. the education in Liberia B. stopping the world war
C. the women's movement D. protecting the environment
29. The underlined word “pediatrician” in Paragraph 2 is close in meaning to _______.
A. teacher B. politician C. biologist D. doctor
30. What happened to Leymah Gbowee within two years after 1989?
A. She volunteered in shelters. B. She lived an unsettled life.
C. She wrote an autobiography. D. She tried to realize her first dream.
31. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that Leymah Gbowee _______.
A. still has a long way to go B. doesn't have any sense of fear
C. will be another female president D. will make efforts to be CEO of a company
D
Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’ academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and selfconfidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, selfconfidence problems, relationship troubles, and choices about drugs and alcohol. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to turn to drugs(毒品). Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally (口头上) , they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with selfconfidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
32. Education with music classes could _______.
A. waste a lot more money from parents
B. help students improve their school work
C. lead to a lot of emotional problems easily
D. have a bad influence on the quality of education
33. The two studies seem to show that _______.
A. students with great success attended music lessons
B. not all students took part in music lessons
C. music plays an important role in students’ success
D. students having music classes are better in all lessons
34. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that _______.
A. Japan has a good international relationship with America
B. different cultures have different styles of music
C. music makes crosscountry communication possible
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Music — a bridge to understanding B. How to get music back
