Singapore's public transport system is one of the best in the world, so you should have no problem
finding your way around like a local. There are three main forms of public transport that you
would find in any major city here --- trains, buses and taxis.
TRAINS
Trains run from 6: 00 am to midnight. Single trip tickets start at 80 cents. If you buy an
EZ-Link card for $15, you can ride the trains and buses as you like. If you need more information,
just call Transit Link at 1800 767 4333.
BUSES
There are several bus services in Singapore and fares start at 80 cents. Be sure always to ask
the driver the cost of your ticket as he cannot give change.
If you need help, just call Transit Link at 1800 767 4333.
TAXIS
There are three main taxi companies-City Cab, Comfort and Tibs. Booking can also be easy
by calling the numbers listed above.

good choice. Renting takes away the hassle of getting to places around Singapore. Just sit back

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet
away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her
seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything
was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, "I wonder why that woman doesn't
wash her window. It really looks terrible."
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the
inside.Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of
coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly
visible. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was
watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others
through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, "Am I looking
at him through my own dirty window?" Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I
may see the world about me more clearly.
24. The writer couldn't see everything clearly through the window because_____.
A. the woman's window was dirty B. the writer's window was dirty
C. the woman lived nearby D. the writer was near-sighted
25. The writer was surprised that_____.
A. the woman was sitting by her window B. the woman's window was clean
C. the woman did cleaning in the afternoon D. the woman's window was still terrible
26. "It dawned on me" probably means "____".
A. I began to understand it B. it cheered me up
C. I knew it grew light D. it began to get dark
27. It's clear that _____.
A. the writer had never met the woman before B. the writer often washed the window
C. they both worked as cleaners D. they lived in a small town
C
Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the
mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should know that your choice of sport might
have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry(消耗资源). Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large
areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of
energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental
effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for
serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environmentally-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you
could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you
don’t have to worry about resources and your wallet. Simple and free, power walking can also
keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20
minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight
control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environmentally-friendly
equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green
gyms(健身房;体育馆)”. They are better replacements(代替物)for traditional health clubs and
modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or some
other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of
all, it’s free.
28. What do we know about golf from the passage?
A. It pollutes the environment with all sorts of chemicals.
B. It needs water and other energy to keep its courses green.
C. It is very popular in Portugal and Spain.
D. It causes water shortages around the world.
29. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of power walking according to the passage?
A. It is environmentally-friendly. B. It improves our health.
C. It is simple and free. D. It can make you put on weight.
30. Which sport is the writer most likely to advise us to do?
A. Playing basketball in a gym. B. Motor racing in the desert.
C. Cycling around a lake. D. Swimming in a sports center.
31. What is the main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To show us some major outdoors sports.
B. To encourage us to go in for green sports.
C. To discuss the influence of some popular sports
D. To introduce some environmentally-friendly sports.
D
Do you want to live a happier, less stressful (有压力的) life? Try laughing for no reason at all.
That’s how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world — and many
doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. “Young
children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr.
Kataria. “Everyone’s naturally good at laughing — it’s the universal language. We want people to
feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300
worldwide.
Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to
a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in
the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%.
So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to
find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest — I wasn’t interested in
laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher
told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha,” while looking at each other. However, our
bodies can’t tell the difference between fake(假的) laughter and real laughter, so they still produce
the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real — and
some people just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and
comfortable I felt. So if you’re under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with
the results!
32. In which country was the first Laughter Club started?
A. Britain. B. America. C. Australia. D. India.
33. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class?
A. Surprised. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Stressful.
34. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real?
A. After a few minutes. B. After a few hours. C. After a few seconds. D. After a few
days.
35. Which of the following isTRUE according to the passage?
A. Fake laughter and real laughter are both good for health.
B. 40% of the people in Laughter Clubs are good friends.
C. Adults laugh more often than children in a day.
D. Laughing is the best way to prevent illness.

Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You will 61 (probable)
say that they go to learn languages, history, science and some other knowledge. That’s quite true,
but do you know 62 they learn these things?
We send our children to school to prepare them 63 the future when they grow up
and have to work for 64 (they). Nearly everything they study at school has some
practical use in their life. But is that 65 only reason why they go to school?
There is more in education than just 66 (learn) facts. We go to school to learn how
to learn, so that when we have left school we can continue to learn. A man 67 really
knows how to learn will always be 68 (success), because when he has to do something
new, he will not only be able to do it well himself, he will also be able 69 (teach) others

Dear Bob,
I'm very pleased to write to you, I know you're an expert in English learning. I've so many
problems to trouble you now. English is so difficult that I nearly want to give it up! In English
class I can't follow my teacher because of the poor listening. Also I can't remember the words

What's worse, when I read English, I am often trapped in the unknown words. It stops me from
receiving the main information. You can imagine what the result of my English learning is! Those
worry me a lot. What should I do? Would you please help me? I will be very grateful to get your
reply.
